Evaluation of Silicon Nitride for Brayton Turbine Wheel Application
Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is being evaluated as a risk-reduction alternative for a Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter Brayton turbine wheel in the event that the Prometheus program design requirements exceed the creep strength of the baseline metallic superalloys. Five Si3N4 ceramics, each processed by a different method, were screened based on the Weibull distribution of bend strength at 1700 F (927 C). Three of the Si3N4 ceramics, Honeywell AS800, Kyocera SN282, and Saint-Gobain NT154, had bend strengths in excess of 87 ksi (600 MPa) at 1700 F (927 C). These were chosen for further assessment and consideration for future subcomponent and component fabrication and testing
A sintering model for SiC(sub)w/Si3N4 composites
Presented is a model which suggests that it should be possible to pressureless sinter a SiC(sub w)/ Si3N4 composite to theoretical density. Prior failure to achieve complete densification by sintering is attributed to the use of compositions which result in a glass deficit. There is one basic premise for this model. The ratio of glass amount to surface area of nonglass constituents must be the same for both composite and sinterable monolithic Si3N4. This model suggests that whisker and grain sizes and whisker loading influence the glass amount necessary for successful sintering of composites. According to the model, a large glass amount will be necessary for successful sintering of these composites. However, grain boundary thicknesses in the composite will be less than those in the analogous monolithic materials. This suggests that good high temperature strength may still be attained. A recent report supports the predictions of the model
Slurry-pressing consolidation of silicon nitride
A baseline slurry-pressing method for a silicon nitride material is developed. The Si3N4 composition contained 5.8 wt percent SiO2 and 6.4 wt percent Y2O3. Slurry-pressing variables included volume percent solids, application of ultrasonic energy, and pH. Twenty vol percent slurry-pressed material was approximately 11 percent stronger than both 30 vol percent slurry-pressed and dry-pressed materials. The Student's t-test showed the difference to be significant at the 99 percent confidence level. Twenty volume percent (300 h) slurry-pressed test bars exhibited strengths as high as 980 MPa. Large, columnar beta-Si3N4 grains caused failure in the highest strength specimens. The improved strength correlated with better structural uniformity as determined by radiography, optical microscopy, and image analysis
Mechanical behavior and failure phenomenon of an in situ-toughened silicon nitride
The Weibull modulus, fracture toughness and crack growth resistance of an in-situ toughened, silicon nitride material used to manufacture a turbine combustor were determined from room temperature to 1371 C. The material exhibited an elongated grain structure that resulted in improved fracture toughness, nonlinear crack growth resistance, and good elevated temperature strength. However, low temperature strength was limited by grains of excessive length (30 to 100 microns). These excessively long grains were surrounded by regions rich in sintering additives
Reliability analysis of a structural ceramic combustion chamber
The Weibull modulus, fracture toughness and thermal properties of a silicon nitride material used to make a gas turbine combustor were experimentally measured. The location and nature of failure origins resulting from bend tests were determined with fractographic analysis. The measured Weibull parameters were used along with thermal and stress analysis to determine failure probabilities of the combustor with the CARES design code. The effect of data censoring, FEM mesh refinement, and fracture criterion were considered in the analysis
Permeability of Candidate Stirling Heater Head Materials Measured
Researchers at the NASA Glenn Research Center are evaluating high-temperature materials for Stirling heater heads for second- and third-generation Stirling radioisotope power systems that would help to increase the system efficiency to 30 to 35 percent and the system specific power to 8 to 10+ W/kg. Ceramic materials could make it possible for the convertor hot-end temperature to be increased to 1050 to 1200 C, in comparison to the current 650 C with an Inconel 718 heater head. A hermetically sealed Stirling heater head must retain a constant internal pressure of nearly 400-psi helium (He) throughout its useful life (120,000 hr) at the design operating temperature. Therefore, He permeability was measured for eight potential materials and compared with the permeability of the current heater head material, Inconel 718. The eight materials included silicon nitride (Si3N4), silicon dioxide (SiO2), both sintered and chemical vapor deposited (CVD) silicon carbide (SiC), alumina (Al2O3), two types of melt-infiltrated (MI) SiC/SiC composites, and a carbon/SiC composite (C/SiC). Glenn submitted samples of each material to Porous Materials, Inc., Ithaca, New York, for permeability analysis. At room temperature and 30-psi He, four materials--Si3N4, Al2O3, SiO2, and sintered SiC--demonstrated lower permeability than Inconel 718. The CVD SiC and all the composite materials were significantly more permeable to He than the baseline material
A Cepheid Distance to NGC 4603 in Centaurus
In an attempt to use Cepheid variables to determine the distance to the
Centaurus cluster, we have obtained images of NGC 4603 with the Hubble Space
Telescope on 9 epochs using WFPC2 and the F555W and F814W filters. This galaxy
has been suggested to lie within the ``Cen30'' portion of the cluster and is
the most distant object for which this method has been attempted. Previous
distance estimates for Cen30 have varied significantly and some have presented
disagreements with the peculiar velocity predicted from redshift surveys,
motivating this investigation. Using our observations, we have found 61
candidate Cepheid variable stars; however, a significant fraction of these
candidates are likely to be nonvariable stars whose magnitude measurement
errors happen to fit a Cepheid light curve of significant amplitude for some
choice of period and phase. Through a maximum likelihood technique, we
determine that we have observed 43 +/- 7 real Cepheids and that NGC 4603 has a
distance modulus of 32.61 +0.11/-0.10 (random, 1 sigma) +0.24/-0.25
(systematic, adding in quadrature), corresponding to a distance of 33.3 Mpc.
This is consistent with a number of recent estimates of the distance to NGC
4603 or Cen30 and implies a small peculiar velocity consistent with predictions
from the IRAS 1.2 Jy redshift survey if the galaxy lies in the foreground of
the cluster.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 17 pages with

Characteristic cohomology of -form gauge theories
The characteristic cohomology for an arbitrary set of free
-form gauge fields is explicitly worked out in all form degrees ,
where is the spacetime dimension. It is shown that this cohomology is
finite-dimensional and completely generated by the forms dual to the field
strengths. The gauge invariant characteristic cohomology is also computed. The
results are extended to interacting -form gauge theories with gauge
invariant interactions. Implications for the BRST cohomology are mentioned.Comment: Latex file, no figures, 44 page
Multicenter Trial of a Combination Probiotic for Children with Gastroenteritis.
Background
Gastroenteritis accounts for approximately 1.7 million visits to the emergency department (ED) by children in the United States every year. Data to determine whether the use of probiotics improves outcomes in these children are lacking.
Methods
We conducted a randomized, double-blind trial involving 886 children 3 to 48 months of age with gastroenteritis who presented to six pediatric EDs in Canada. Participants received a 5-day course of a combination probiotic product containing Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and L. helveticus R0052, at a dose of 4.0×10
Results
Moderate-to-severe gastroenteritis within 14 days after enrollment occurred in 108 of 414 participants (26.1%) who were assigned to probiotics and 102 of 413 participants (24.7%) who were assigned to placebo (odds ratio, 1.06; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.77 to 1.46; P=0.72). After adjustment for trial site, age, detection of rotavirus in stool, and frequency of diarrhea and vomiting before enrollment, trial-group assignment did not predict moderate-to-severe gastroenteritis (odds ratio, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.76 to 1.49; P=0.74). There were no significant differences between the probiotic group and the placebo group in the median duration of diarrhea (52.5 hours [interquartile range, 18.3 to 95.8] and 55.5 hours [interquartile range, 20.2 to 102.3], respectively; P=0.31) or vomiting (17.7 hours [interquartile range, 0 to 58.6] and 18.7 hours [interquartile range, 0 to 51.6], P=0.18), the percentages of participants with unscheduled visits to a health care provider (30.2% and 26.6%; odds ratio, 1.19; 95% CI, 0.87 to 1.62; P=0.27), and the percentage of participants who reported an adverse event (34.8% and 38.7%; odds ratio, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.62 to 1.11; P=0.21).
Conclusions
In children who presented to the emergency department with gastroenteritis, twice-daily administration of a combined L. rhamnosus-L. helveticus probiotic did not prevent the development of moderate-to-severe gastroenteritis within 14 days after enrollment. Higher-Spin Fermionic Gauge Fields and Their Electromagnetic Coupling
We study the electromagnetic coupling of massless higher-spin fermions in
flat space. Under the assumptions of locality and Poincare invariance, we
employ the BRST-BV cohomological methods to construct consistent
parity-preserving off-shell cubic 1-s-s vertices. Consistency and
non-triviality of the deformations not only rule out minimal coupling, but also
restrict the possible number of derivatives. Our findings are in complete
agreement with, but derived in a manner independent from, the
light-cone-formulation results of Metsaev and the string-theory-inspired
results of Sagnotti-Taronna. We prove that any gauge-algebra-preserving vertex
cannot deform the gauge transformations. We also show that in a local theory,
without additional dynamical higher-spin gauge fields, the non-abelian vertices
are eliminated by the lack of consistent second-order deformations.Comment: 44 pages; references added, minor changes made, to appear in JHE
