    A holographic computation of the central charges of d=4, N=2 SCFTs

    We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute the central charges of the d=4, N=2 superconformal field theories arising from N D3-branes at singularities in F-theory. These include the conformal theories with E_n global symmetries. We compute the central charges a and c related to the conformal anomaly, and also the central charges k associated to the global symmetry in these theories. All of these are related to the coefficients of Chern-Simons terms in the dual string theory on AdS_5. Our computation is exact for all values of N, enabling several tests of the dualities recently proposed by Argyres and Seiberg for the E_6 and E_7 theories with N=1.Comment: 16 pages; v4: one reference adde

    A Torsion Correction to the RR 4-Form Fieldstrength

    The shifted quantization condition of the M-theory 4-form G_4 is well-known. The most naive generalization to type IIA string theory fails, an orientifold counterexample was found by Hori in hep-th/9805141. In this note we use D2-brane anomaly cancellation to find the corresponding shifted quantization condition in IIA. Our analysis is consistent with the known O4-plane tensions if we include a torsion correction to the usual construction of G_4 from C_3, B and G_2.     We study the anomalies of a charge Q2Q_2 self-dual string solution in the Coulomb branch of Q5Q_5 M5-branes. Cancellation of these anomalies allows us to determine the anomaly of the zero-modes on the self-dual string and their scaling with Q2Q_2 and Q5Q_5.     The Exchange of Orientifold Two-Planes in M-theory

    We propose an M-theory lift picture of the exchange among type IIA orientifold two-planes. This consists in wrapping a M5-brane on a three-cycle in the transverse space of the M-theory orientifold plane OM2. A flux quantization condition for the three-form self-dual field strength, on the worldvolume of the M5-brane is computed. This condition establishes the value which explains the relative charge between two different OM2-planes. Also, we find that the exchange of the four types of orientifold two-planes in string theory, has a common picture in M-theory. Moreover, we find that the assignment of the extra charge is fixed by cohomology and by the flux quantization of the field strength G in M-theory. We conclude that cohomology is sufficient to describe some orientifold properties in M-theory, that at string theory level, only K-theory is able to explain.Comment: 23+1 pages, 6 figures. v2: typos corrected, references adde

    Ramond-Ramond Fields, Fractional Branes and Orbifold Differential K-Theory

    We study D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on global orbifolds of Type II string theory with vanishing H-flux using methods of equivariant K-theory and K-homology. We illustrate how Bredon equivariant cohomology naturally realizes stringy orbifold cohomology. We emphasize its role as the correct cohomological tool which captures known features of the low-energy effective field theory, and which provides new consistency conditions for fractional D-branes and Ramond-Ramond fields on orbifolds. We use an equivariant Chern character from equivariant K-theory to Bredon cohomology to define new Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes which generalize previous examples. We propose a definition for groups of differential characters associated to equivariant K-theory. We derive a Dirac quantization rule for Ramond-Ramond fluxes, and study flat Ramond-Ramond potentials on orbifolds.Comment: 46 pages; v2: typos correcte

    Recently Maldacena, Moore, and Seiberg (MMS) have proposed a physical interpretation of the Atiyah-Hirzebruch spectral sequence, which roughly computes the K-homology groups that classify D-branes. We note that in IIB string theory, this approach can be generalized to include NS charged objects and conjecture an S-duality covariant, nonlinear extension of the spectral sequence. We then compute the contribution of the MMS double-instanton configuration to the derivation d_5. We conclude with an M-theoretic generalization reminiscent of 11-dimensional E_8 gauge theory.Comment: 27 pages, 3 figure

    A representation formula for maps on supermanifolds

    In this paper we analyze the notion of morphisms of rings of superfunctions which is the basic concept underlying the definition of supermanifolds as ringed spaces (i.e. following Berezin, Leites, Manin, etc.). We establish a representation formula for all morphisms from the algebra of functions on an ordinary manifolds to the superalgebra of functions on an open subset of R^{p|q}. We then derive two consequences of this result. The first one is that we can integrate the data associated with a morphism in order to get a (non unique) map defined on an ordinary space (and uniqueness can achieved by restriction to a scheme). The second one is a simple and intuitive recipe to compute pull-back images of a function on a manifold by a map defined on a superspace.Comment: 23 page

    Real-Time Visualization of HIV-1 GAG Trafficking in Infected Macrophages

    HIV-1 particle production is driven by the Gag precursor protein Pr55Gag. Despite significant progress in defining both the viral and cellular determinants of HIV-1 assembly and release, the trafficking pathway used by Gag to reach its site of assembly in the infected cell remains to be elucidated. The Gag trafficking itinerary in primary monocyte-derived macrophages is especially poorly understood. To define the site of assembly and characterize the Gag trafficking pathway in this physiologically relevant cell type, we have made use of the biarsenical-tetracysteine system. A small tetracysteine tag was introduced near the C-terminus of the matrix domain of Gag. The insertion of the tag at this position did not interfere with Gag trafficking, virus assembly or release, particle infectivity, or the kinetics of virus replication. By using this in vivo detection system to visualize Gag trafficking in living macrophages, Gag was observed to accumulate both at the plasma membrane and in an apparently internal compartment that bears markers characteristic of late endosomes or multivesicular bodies. Significantly, the internal Gag rapidly translocated to the junction between the infected macrophages and uninfected T cells following macrophage/T-cell synapse formation. These data indicate that a population of Gag in infected macrophages remains sequestered internally and is presented to uninfected target cells at a virological synapse

    Geometric K-Homology of Flat D-Branes

    We use the Baum-Douglas construction of K-homology to explicitly describe various aspects of D-branes in Type II superstring theory in the absence of background supergravity form fields. We rigorously derive various stability criteria for states of D-branes and show how standard bound state constructions are naturally realized directly in terms of topological K-cycles. We formulate the mechanism of flux stabilization in terms of the K-homology of non-trivial fibre bundles.
