Neurohumoral and mechanical factors in the modulation of left ventricular mass

    Get PDF
The goals for the research were to define, describe, and study those neuroendocrine and mechanical mechanisms that may play a role in the initiation and maintenance of an increase in, or cause regression of, the mass of the left ventricle. Dynamic changes in heart mass have been observed to occur in man and animals: (1) enlargement of the heart is frequently encountered in patients with hypertensive disease, and (2) decrease in heart mass has been reported for men exposed to prolonged space flight. The basic physiologic processes which may explain how these changes occur, and the effects of gain or loss of myocardial mass on cardiac performance were considered significant questions to be answered for the benefit of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

    Entangled granular media

We study the geometrically induced cohesion of ensembles of granular "u-particles" which mechanically entangle through particle interpenetration. We vary the length-to-width ratio l/wl/w of the u-particles and form them into free-standing vertical columns. In laboratory experiment we monitor the response of the columns to sinusoidal vibration (frequency ff, peak acceleration Γ\Gamma). Column collapse occurs in a characteristic time, τ\tau, which follows the relation τ=f1exp(Δ/Γ)\tau = f^{-1} \exp(\Delta / \Gamma). Δ\Delta resembles an activation energy and is maximal at intermediate l/wl/w. Simulation reveals that optimal strength results from competition between packing and entanglement.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Large Flexible Solar Arrays

    Get PDF
The majority of existing large solar arrays are designed against the requirements imposed by communcations satellites in geostationary orbits. For example, high launcher costs per kilogramme of satellite mass dictate an ecomomic preference for lightweight array designs, and with no method of satellite retrieval from GEO, array deployment can use simple \u27one shot\u27 devices. This is not true for low earth orbit missions. However, the introduction of the Space Shuttle and the manned space station programme, including Columbus has caused a change of emphasis inarraydesign. Stowage volume rather than mass is now the cost criterion. Furthermore, to fully use the Shuttle attributes and the Space Station design philosophy the ability to retract the array and restow for return to earth has also become a design driver. These factors lead to a more complex, but inherently more flexible array than its geostationary counterpart

    Shtetl

Shtetl looks at the Jewish community as a whole by focusing on the individuals within it. Jews are an incredibly diverse people. They come from all walks of life and racial backgrounds. Contrary to popular belief, there is no stereotypical Jewish person. Not all Jews are rich, nor do they all have curly dark hair and big noses. By being forced to look at the individuals within the community together, it becomes clear that while all of these individuals are Jewish, and therefore bound to each other because of it, they are all different and break this stereotypical mold

Visible Veil Dressing & the Gender Geopolitics of ‘What Not To Wear’

    Get PDF
This essay critically reflects on ‘Burkha Ban’ legislation in Europe and surrounding public controversies by drawing links between the visual aesthetics of makeover reality TV, the veil, and the cultural politics of ‘visibly Muslim’ dress in western societies. In all cases we see women’s bodies and comportment under increasing scrutiny at the intersection of post 9/11 geopolitics, the global fashion industry, national identity, and everyday life

Rock-Chic(k) Lit: Vanguard or Old Guard?

A string of memoirs published by women musicians has been revising androcentric accounts of popular music making: onstage, in the studio, and on tour. The memoirs of Patti Smith, Viv Albertine, Kim Gordon, Carrie Brownstein, Chrissie Hynde, and Britt Smith Start provide a rich vein of inquiry into the under-acknowledged role that women musicians have played in the alternative – punk – music that is integral to the soundscape of Anglo-American countercultural and feminist politics. This paper considers their work as one way of substantiating the link between inquiries into the popular culture and world politics nexus writ large and, on the other hand, the embodied, psychoemotional dimensions of lived lives in the communities of practice that constitute these interconnections. First-person accounts like these provide opportunities and challenges for the analyst interested in exploring the complexities of creative and political agency of the female, rather than androgynous male Other (e.g. girl in a band, girl band, woman-with-guitar) in a (hetero)sexist and corporatized cultural domain sustained by masculinist tropes in music-making and analysis. These autobiographies - of personal lives but primarily of committed musicianship, artistic and professional collaborations – are much more than stories of single-minded women achieving success in hostile domains. These narratives comprise a rich cultural archive of the individual and collective complexities of musical countercultures that have emerged from within, but also push back against the global music and entertainment industry that underpins Anglo-American political economic and cultural hegemony
