A generation apart? Youth and political participation in Britain
Conventional wisdom holds that young people in Britain are alienated from politics, with some claiming that this reflects a wider crisis of legitimacy that should be met by initiatives to increase citizenship. This article addresses these areas, presenting both panel survey and focus group data from first-time voters. It concludes that, contrary to the findings from many predominantly quantitative studies of political participation, young people are interested in political matters, and do support the democratic process. However they feel a sense of anti-climax having voted for the first time, and are critical of those who have been elected to positions of political power. If they are a generation apart, this is less to do with apathy, and more to do with their engaged scepticism about ‘formal’ politics in Britain
Reflexivity and ethical research practice while interviewing on sexual topics
Reflexivity is a multimodal research feature that relies on the researcher’s subjectivity and self-awareness. This paper discusses uses of reflexivity when carrying out qualitative in-depth interviews on sexual topics. Through extracts of a challenging interview, where the challenge comes in the form of sexualised provocation from one man to another, this paper considers the benefits of using reflexivity to address emerging complexities in the interview process. The discussion focuses on ethical research practice through the lens of three forms of reflexivity: (1) reviewing the values that underpin a research project, with emphasis on the tension between rationality and intuition; (2) emotional self-awareness and self-care; and (3) recognition of the power dynamics in the researcher-participant relationship. Reflexivity promotes an intuition-informed decision-making process as a means to achieve ethical practice and conduct interviews with sensitivity and proficiency
Conserved and divergent functions of Drosophila atonal , amphibian, and mammalian Ath5 genes
Insect and vertebrate eyes differ in their formation, cellular composition, neural connectivity, and visual function. Despite this diversity, Drosophila atonal and its vertebrate Ortholog in the eye, Ath5 , each regulate determination of the first retinal neuron class—R8 photo-receptors and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs)—in their respective organisms. We have performed a cross-species functional comparison of these genes. In ato 1 mutant Drosophila , ectopic Xenopus Ath5 ( Xath5 ) rescues photoreceptor cell development comparably with atonal . In contrast, mouse Ath5 ( Math5 ) induces formation of very few ommatidia, and most of these lack R8 cells. In the developing frog eye, ectopic atonal , like Xath5 , promotes the differentiation RGCs. Despite strong conservation of atonal , Xath5 , and Math5 structure and shared function, other factors must contribute to the species specificity of retinal neuron determination. These observations suggest that the atonal family may occupy a position in a gene hierarchy where differences in gene regulation or function can be correlated with evolutionary diversity of eye development.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/72909/1/j.1525-142X.2003.03058.x.pd
Language attitudes, linguistic authority and independence in 21st century Catalonia
peer-reviewedIn a context of increasing linguistic and cultural diversity and political uncertainty in Catalonia, this article reports on a research project which set out to explore the attitudes of members of independence organisations operating in the city of Girona toward the Catalan and Spanish languages. This study approaches language attitudes through the theoretical lens of linguistic authority, in particular, the concepts of anonymity and authenticity. The data, gathered from six focus groups, provide an insight on the nature of linguistic authority in contemporary Catalonia. Two themes emerge in the informants’ discussion of Catalan and Spanish: ‘twenty-first Century Catalanisme’ and ‘Embracing Linguistic Diversity’. The comments of the respondents indicate that, against the backdrop of the independence process in the region, bilingualism and multilingualism have become highly valued in the territory. In addition, this study suggests that a fuller understanding of the situation in Catalonia may be facilitated by qualitative approaches, which explore attitudes in-depth
Competencies for food graduate careers: developing a language tool
Unlike many other graduate career pathways in the UK, the food industry does not have a cohesive competency framework to support employers, students and degree providers. Food sciences-based technical graduates are a significant proportion of the industry’s graduate intake; this study aims to provide such a framework. Initial work involving a sample of representative stakeholders has created a list of typical attributes and associated definitions that may be desirable in food sciences graduates. Material was gathered by semi-structured qualitative interviews and analysed by thematic analysis followed by a modified Delphi technique. The resulting framework is tailored to needs and terminology prevalent in food industry employment. The process employed could be utilised for building other vocational graduate competency frameworks. Further plans include using the framework to ascertain the important elements for typical graduate entry roles, better informing students about desirable qualities and supporting future competency-based curriculum review
Combined Inactivation of pRB and Hippo Pathways Induces Dedifferentiation in the Drosophila Retina
Functional inactivation of the Retinoblastoma (pRB) pathway is an early and obligatory event in tumorigenesis. The importance of pRB is usually explained by its ability to promote cell cycle exit. Here, we demonstrate that, independently of cell cycle exit control, in cooperation with the Hippo tumor suppressor pathway, pRB functions to maintain the terminally differentiated state. We show that mutations in the Hippo signaling pathway, wts or hpo, trigger widespread dedifferentiation of rbf mutant cells in the Drosophila eye. Initially, rbf wts or rbf hpo double mutant cells are morphologically indistinguishable from their wild-type counterparts as they properly differentiate into photoreceptors, form axonal projections, and express late neuronal markers. However, the double mutant cells cannot maintain their neuronal identity, dedifferentiate, and thus become uncommitted eye specific cells. Surprisingly, this dedifferentiation is fully independent of cell cycle exit defects and occurs even when inappropriate proliferation is fully blocked by a de2f1 mutation. Thus, our results reveal the novel involvement of the pRB pathway during the maintenance of a differentiated state and suggest that terminally differentiated Rb mutant cells are intrinsically prone to dedifferentiation, can be converted to progenitor cells, and thus contribute to cancer advancement
Prediction of Protein Binding Regions in Disordered Proteins
Many disordered proteins function via binding to a structured partner and undergo
a disorder-to-order transition. The coupled folding and binding can confer
several functional advantages such as the precise control of binding specificity
without increased affinity. Additionally, the inherent flexibility allows the
binding site to adopt various conformations and to bind to multiple partners.
These features explain the prevalence of such binding elements in signaling and
regulatory processes. In this work, we report ANCHOR, a method for the
prediction of disordered binding regions. ANCHOR relies on the pairwise energy
estimation approach that is the basis of IUPred, a previous general disorder
prediction method. In order to predict disordered binding regions, we seek to
identify segments that are in disordered regions, cannot form enough favorable
intrachain interactions to fold on their own, and are likely to gain stabilizing
energy by interacting with a globular protein partner. The performance of ANCHOR
was found to be largely independent from the amino acid composition and adopted
secondary structure. Longer binding sites generally were predicted to be
segmented, in agreement with available experimentally characterized examples.
Scanning several hundred proteomes showed that the occurrence of disordered
binding sites increased with the complexity of the organisms even compared to
disordered regions in general. Furthermore, the length distribution of binding
sites was different from disordered protein regions in general and was dominated
by shorter segments. These results underline the importance of disordered
proteins and protein segments in establishing new binding regions. Due to their
specific biophysical properties, disordered binding sites generally carry a
robust sequence signal, and this signal is efficiently captured by our method.
Through its generality, ANCHOR opens new ways to study the essential functional
sites of disordered proteins
Risky business: factor analysis of survey data – assessing the probability of incorrect dimensionalisation
This paper undertakes a systematic assessment of the extent to which factor analysis the correct number of latent dimensions (factors) when applied to ordered categorical survey items (so-called Likert items). We simulate 2400 data sets of uni-dimensional Likert items that vary systematically over a range of conditions such as the underlying population distribution, the number of items, the level of random error, and characteristics of items and item-sets. Each of these datasets is factor analysed in a variety of ways that are frequently used in the extant literature, or that are recommended in current methodological texts. These include exploratory factor retention heuristics such as Kaiser’s criterion, Parallel Analysis and a non-graphical scree test, and (for exploratory and confirmatory analyses) evaluations of model fit. These analyses are conducted on the basis of Pearson and polychoric correlations.We find that, irrespective of the particular mode of analysis, factor analysis applied to ordered-categorical survey data very often leads to over-dimensionalisation. The magnitude of this risk depends on the specific way in which factor analysis is conducted, the number of items, the properties of the set of items, and the underlying population distribution. The paper concludes with a discussion of the consequences of overdimensionalisation, and a brief mention of alternative modes of analysis that are much less prone to such problems
