    Using individual-level student data from Pennsylvania, this study explores the extent to which charter school racial composition may be an important factor in students’ self-segregative school choices. Findings indicate that, holding distance and enrollment constant, Black and Latino students are strongly averse to moving to charter schools with higher percentages of White students. Conversely, White students are more likely to enroll in such charter schools. As the percentage and number of students transferring into charter schools increases, self-segregative school choices raise critical questions regarding educational equity, and the effects of educational reform and school choice policies on the fostering of racially diverse educational environments.El uso de datos de los estudiantes a nivel individual de Pennsylvania, este estudio explora la medida en la composición racial escuela autónoma que puede ser un factor importante en la selección de escuelas auto-segregadora de los alumnos. Los resultados indican ue, la celebración de la distancia y la inscripción constante, los estudiantes latinos y negros son fuertemente reacios a trasladarse a las escuelas autónomas con mayor porcentaje de estudiantes blancos. Por el contrario, los estudiantes blancos son más propensos a inscribirse en este tipo de escuelas autónomas. Como el porcentaje y el número de estudiantes que se transfieren al charter escuelas aumenta, opciones de escuelas auto-segregadora plantean cuestiones críticas con respecto a la equidad educativa, y los efectos de las políticas de reforma y de elección de escuelas de educación sobre el fomento de diversas razas entornos educativos.A utilização de dados de estudantes a nível individual da Pensilvânia, este estudo explora a extensão a composição racial escola charter pode ser um fator importante na seleção de escolas os alunos auto-segregação. Os resultados indicam ue, mantendo constante a distância e inscrição, os estudantes latinos e negros são fortemente relutantes em mudar-se para as escolas charter com o maior percentual de alunos brancos. Por outro lado, os alunos brancos são mais propensos a se inscrever neste tipo de escolas charter. Como a percentagem eo número de alunos que transferir para as escolas charter aumenta, a escolha da escola de auto-segregação levantar questões críticas sobre a equidade educacional, e os efeitos das políticas de reforma e escolha da escola de promoção de educação racialmente diversos ambientes educacionais.

    Novel gene expression patterns along the proximo-distal axis of the mouse embryo before gastrulation

    BACKGROUND: To date, the earliest stage at which the orientation of the anterior-posterior axis in the mouse embryo is distinguishable by asymmetric gene expression is shortly after E5.5. At E5.5, prospective anterior markers are expressed at the distal tip of the embryo, whereas prospective posterior markers are expressed more proximally, close to the boundary with the extraembryonic region. RESULTS: To contribute to elucidating the mechanisms underlying the events involved in early patterning of the mouse embryo, we have carried out a microarray screen to identify novel genes that are differentially expressed between the distal and proximal parts of the E5.5 embryo. Secondary screening of resulting candidates by in situ hybridisation at E5.5 and E6.5 revealed novel expression patterns for known and previously uncharacterised genes, including Peg10, Ctsz1, Cubilin, Jarid1b, Ndrg1, Sfmbt2, Gjb5, Talia and Plet1. The previously undescribed gene Talia and recently identified Plet1 are expressed specifically in the distal-most part of the extraembryonic ectoderm, adjacent to the epiblast, and are therefore potential candidates for regulating early patterning events. Talia and the previously described gene XE7 define a gene family highly conserved among metazoans and with a predicted protein structure suggestive of a post-transcriptional regulative function, whilst Plet1 appears to be mammal-specific and of unknown function. CONCLUSION: Our approach has allowed us to compare expression between dissected parts of the egg cylinder and has identified multiple genes with novel expression patterns at this developmental stage. These genes are potential candidates for regulating tissue interactions following implantation

    Choice, Cyber Charter Schools, and the Educational Marketplace for Rural School Districts

    Pennsylvania is a state with significant proportions of students who attend rural schools, as well as students who attend charter schools. This study examines enrollment patterns of students in brick and mortar and cyber charter schools in Pennsylvania and how these enrollment patterns differ across geographic locale. We analyze student-level enrollment data, controlling for demographic characteristics, and find that, in contrast to brick and mortar schools, cyber charter schools attract students from a variety of locales across the urban-rural continuum. However, rural students exhibit the greatest likelihood of attending cyber charter schools. We discuss the implications of these findings in relation to educational equity, cyber charter school underperformance, and the fiscal impacts of charter schools on the budgets of small school districts

    A novel MSMB-related microprotein in the postovulatory egg coats of marsupials

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Early marsupial conceptuses differ markedly from those of eutherian mammals, especially during cleavage and early blastocyst stages of development. Additionally, in marsupials the zona pellucida is surrounded by two acellular layers, the mucoid coat and shell, which are formed from secretions from the reproductive tract.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We report the identification of a novel postovulatory coat component in marsupials, which we call uterinesecreted microprotein (USM). USM belongs to a family of disulfide-rich microproteins of unconfirmed function that is found throughout deuterostomes and in some protostomes, and includes β-microseminoprotein (MSMB) and prostate-associated microseminoprotein (MSMP). We describe the evolution of this family in detail, including USM-related sequences in other vertebrates. The orthologue of <it>USM </it>in the tammar wallaby, <it>USM1</it>, is expressed by the endometrium with a dynamic temporal profile, possibly under the control of progesterone.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>USM appears to have evolved in a mammalian ancestor specifically as a component of the postovulatory coats. By analogy with the known properties of MSMB, it may have roles in regulating sperm motility/survival or in the immune system. However, its C-terminal domain is greatly truncated compared with MSMB, suggesting a divergent function.</p

    PhotoSpec: A new instrument to measure spatially distributed red and far-red Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence

    Solar-Induced Chlorophyll Fluorescence (SIF) is an emission of light in the 650–850 nm spectral range from the excited state of the chlorophyll-a pigment after absorption of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). As this is directly linked to the electron transport chain in oxygenic photosynthesis, SIF is a powerful proxy for photosynthetic activity. SIF observations are relatively new and, while global scale measurements from satellites using high-resolution spectroscopy of Fraunhofer bands are becoming more available, observations at the intermediate canopy scale using these techniques are sparse. We present a novel ground-based spectrometer system - PhotoSpec - for measuring SIF in the red (670–732 nm) and far-red (729–784 nm) wavelength range as well as canopy reflectance (400–900 nm) to calculate vegetation indices, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), the enhanced vegetation index (EVI), and the photochemical reflectance index (PRI). PhotoSpec includes a 2D scanning telescope unit which can be pointed to any location in a canopy with a narrow field of view (FOV = 0.7°). PhotoSpec has a high signal-to-noise ratio and spectral resolution, which allows high precision solar Fraunhofer line retrievals over the entire fluorescence wavelength range under all atmospheric conditions using a new two-step linearized least-squares retrieval procedure. Initial PhotoSpec observations include the diurnal SIF cycle of single broad leaves, grass, and dark-light transitions. Results from the first tower-based measurements in Costa Rica show that the instrument can continuously monitor SIF of several tropical species throughout the day. The PhotoSpec instrument can be used to explore the relationship between SIF, photosynthetic efficiencies, Gross Primary Productivity (GPP), and the impact of canopy radiative transfer, viewing geometry, and stress conditions at the canopy scale

    Primitive Endoderm Differentiates via a Three-Step Mechanism Involving Nanog and RTK Signaling

    SummaryDuring preimplantation mouse development, the inner cell mass (ICM) differentiates into two cell lineages—the epiblast and the primitive endoderm (PrE)—whose precursors are identifiable by reciprocal expression of Nanog and Gata6, respectively. PrE formation depends on Nanog by a non-cell-autonomous mechanism. To decipher early cell- and non-cell-autonomous effects, we performed a mosaic knockdown of Nanog and found that this is sufficient to induce a PrE fate cell autonomously. Strikingly, in Nanog null embryos, Gata6 expression is maintained, showing that initiation of the PrE program is Nanog independent. Treatment of Nanog null embryos with pharmacological inhibitors revealed that RTK dependency of Gata6 expression is initially direct but later indirect via Nanog repression. Moreover, we found that subsequent expression of Sox17 and Gata4—later markers of the PrE—depends on the presence of Fgf4 produced by Nanog-expressing cells. Thus, our results reveal three distinct phases in the PrE differentiation program

    Airborne methane remote measurements reveal heavy-tail flux distribution in Four Corners region

    Methane (CH_4) impacts climate as the second strongest anthropogenic greenhouse gas and air quality by influencing tropospheric ozone levels. Space-based observations have identified the Four Corners region in the Southwest United States as an area of large CH_4 enhancements. We conducted an airborne campaign in Four Corners during April 2015 with the next-generation Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (near-infrared) and Hyperspectral Thermal Emission Spectrometer (thermal infrared) imaging spectrometers to better understand the source of methane by measuring methane plumes at 1- to 3-m spatial resolution. Our analysis detected more than 250 individual methane plumes from fossil fuel harvesting, processing, and distributing infrastructures, spanning an emission range from the detection limit ∼2 kg/h to 5 kg/h through ∼5,000 kg/h. Observed sources include gas processing facilities, storage tanks, pipeline leaks, and well pads, as well as a coal mine venting shaft. Overall, plume enhancements and inferred fluxes follow a lognormal distribution, with the top 10% emitters contributing 49 to 66% to the inferred total point source flux of 0.23 Tg/y to 0.39 Tg/y. With the observed confirmation of a lognormal emission distribution, this airborne observing strategy and its ability to locate previously unknown point sources in real time provides an efficient and effective method to identify and mitigate major emissions contributors over a wide geographic area. With improved instrumentation, this capability scales to spaceborne applications [Thompson DR, et al. (2016) Geophys Res Lett 43(12):6571–6578].
