    Contextual determinants of re-reporting for families receiving alternative response: A survival analysis in a Midwestern State

    Differential response (DR) has been widely adopted in over 30 states to address shortcomings of the traditional approach to child maltreatment reports in complex family and case circumstances. However, despite continued evaluation efforts, evidence of the effectiveness of DR remains inconclusive. The current study aims to assess the impact of a DR program and potential predictors, including service match and number of family case workers, on maltreatment re-reports in a Midwestern state. The study utilized a randomized control trial and assigned eligible families to either the Alternative Response (AR) track or Traditional Response (TR) track. The enrollment was implemented in a phased rollout covering all counties in the state. Data were drawn from state child welfare administrative datasets and case worker surveys. The probability and time to re-reporting was calculated using survival analysis, while adjusting for case-level covariates. Prior ongoing case (HR = 3.24, p \u3c 0.001), high risk level (HR = 1.43, p \u3c 0.05), and having only one worker (HR = 1.92, p \u3c 0.001) serve the case were strong predictors of re-reporting. The effect of service match within each level of prior ongoing case (No, Yes) was also a significant predictor of re-reporting (p \u3c 0.05). AR had limited, but nonsignificant, impact on preventing re-reporting after adjusting for these factors, as there was no difference in terms of re-reporting between DR tracks. However, findings suggest that matching child welfare service with family needs is an important component of child welfare practice. Implications for DR policy and practice are discussed

    Latino Parentsā€™ and Adolescentsā€™ Perceptions of the Needs and Issues of Adolescents in Their Community

    Data from The Community Needs Assessment Survey were examined to understand the issues parents and adolescents felt were most important to address for the adolescents in their community. The sample of 1,784 Latino respondents consisted of 892 parent/adolescent dyads. Factor analyses found parents and adolescents identified and prioritized the same six factors: education and career planning, abuse and victimization, adolescent behavior problems, adolescent sexuality, socioeconomic stressors, and relationships. However, parent ratings for all factors were higher, indicating a higher level of concern. The article analyzes differences by age/generation (parents versus adolescents), by immigrant versus native status, and by type of dyad based on the latter (i.e., US born adolescent/US born parent, US born adolescent/immigrant parent, immigrant adolescent/immigrant parent). The authors discuss the complex interaction of these factors and the implications for practice and research

    Of House and Home: The meanings of housing for women engaged in criminalised street-based sex work

    Despite emerging as a core concern for street-based sex workers participating in prostitution diversion programmes (PDPs), housing has received limited empirical attention. In this article, we explore the meanings of housing in the context of court-affiliated PDPs in the US cities of Baltimore and Philadelphia based on interviews and focus groups with 31 PDP participants and 32 criminal legal system professionals. Three themes emerged: (a) housing precarity and crisis mode, (b) housing as a foundation, and (c) housing as an idea(l). PDPs prioritise therapeutic interventions targeting individual behaviours and attitudes over meeting basic needs, often placing programme participants in substandard housing and removing them from existing networks of support. Such prioritisation, which often conflicts with participantsā€™ expressed preferences, does not always leave them better off in the short or long term. PDPsā€™ neglect of the quality, type, and meaning of housing reveals and reinforces a fundamental disregard for people in street-based sex trade as multifaceted, agentic human beings. We conclude that programmes must prioritise home as a ā€˜comfort zoneā€™ that must be afforded to all people

    Containment structures and port configurations

    This article describes the DEMO cryostat, the vacuum vessel, and the tokamak building as well as the system configurations to integrate the main in-vessel components and auxiliary systems developed during the Pre-Conceptual Design Phase. The vacuum vessel is the primary component for radiation shielding and containment of tritium and other radioactive material. Various systems required to operate the plasma are integrated in its ports. The vessel together with the external magnetic coils is located inside the even larger cryostat that has the primary function to provide a vacuum to enable the operation of the superconducting coils in cryogenic condition. The cryostat is surrounded by a thick concrete structure: the bioshield. It protects the external areas from neutron and gamma radiation emitted from the tokamak. The tokamak building layout is aligned with the VV ports implementing floors and separate rooms, so-called port cells, that can be sealed to provide a secondary confinement when a port is opened during in-vessel maintenance. The ports of the torus-shaped VV have to allow for the replacement of in-vessel components but also incorporate plasma limiters and auxiliary heating and diagnostic systems. The divertor is replaced through horizontal ports at the lower level, the breeding blanket (BB) through upper vertical ports. The pipe work of these in-vessel components is also routed through these ports. To facilitate the vertical replacement of the BB, it is divided into large vertical segments. Their mechanical support during operation relies on vertically clamping them inside the vacuum vessel by a combination of obstructed thermal expansion and radial pre-compression due to the ferromagnetic force acting on the breeding blanket structural material in the toroidal magnetic field

    The landscape of chromosomal aberrations in breast cancer mouse models reveals driver-specific routes to tumorigenesis

    Aneuploidy and copy-number alterations (CNAs) are a hallmark of human cancer. Although genetically engineered mouse models (GEMMs) are commonly used to model human cancer, their chromosomal landscapes remain underexplored. Here we use gene expression profiles to infer CNAs in 3,108 samples from 45 mouse models, providing the first comprehensive catalogue of chromosomal aberrations in cancer GEMMs. Mining this resource, we find that most chromosomal aberrations accumulate late during breast tumorigenesis, and observe marked differences in CNA prevalence between mouse mammary tumours initiated with distinct drivers. Some aberrations are recurrent and unique to specific GEMMs, suggesting distinct driver-dependent routes to tumorigenesis. Synteny-based comparison of mouse and human tumours narrows critical regions in CNAs, thereby identifying candidate driver genes. We experimentally validate that loss of Stratifin (SFN) promotes HER2-induced tumorigenesis in human cells. These results demonstrate the power of GEMM CNA analysis to inform the pathogenesis of human cancer

    Silencing of StKCS6 in potato periderm leads to reduced chain lengths of suberin and wax compounds and increased peridermal transpiration

    Very long chain aliphatic compounds occur in the suberin polymer and associated wax. Up to now only few genes involved in suberin biosynthesis have been identified. This is a report on the isolation of a potato (Solanum tuberosum) 3-ketoacyl-CoA synthase (KCS) gene and the study of its molecular and physiological relevance by means of a reverse genetic approach. This gene, called StKCS6, was stably silenced by RNA interference (RNAi) in potato. Analysis of the chemical composition of silenced potato tuber periderms indicated that StKCS6 down-regulation has a significant and fairly specific effect on the chain length distribution of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) and derivatives, occurring in the suberin polymer and peridermal wax. All compounds with chain lengths of C28 and higher were significantly reduced in silenced periderms, whereas compounds with chain lengths of C26 and lower accumulated. Thus, StKCS6 is preferentially involved in the formation of suberin and wax lipidic monomers with chain lengths of C28 and higher. As a result, peridermal transpiration of the silenced lines was about 1.5-times higher than that of the wild type. Our results convincingly show that StKCS6 is involved in both suberin and wax biosynthesis and that a reduction of the monomeric carbon chain lengths leads to increased rates of peridermal transpiration

    On-ice Vibroseis: What lie beneath Ekstrƶm Ice Shelf, East Antarctica?

    Between 2010-2018 an extensive grid of seismic reflection data were collected across the grounding line and on the EkstroĢˆm ice-shelf, using an on-ice vibroseis source and snowstreamer. Here they are used to investigate current ice dynamics and reconstruct the glaciological history of this region. These data show the ice-shelf thickness ranges from 170 m, near the ice-shelf front, to ~600 m near the grounding line. Relic crevasses are seen at the ice base, in the Western part of the ice shelf, which can be tracked back to a current crevasse field at the grounding line. There is also evidence of an ice-shelf basal channel, with a corresponding surface depression. Beneath the sea floor the outcrop and sub-ice extent of the volcanic Explora Wedge (generated through Jurassic rifting and seafloor spreading) is clearly imaged. The wedge is overlain by a sequence of truncated, dipping marine-sediment layers. The sediment layers were likely truncated by former ice advance and subsequent retreat; which has also left evidence in the form topographic over-deepening and glacial debris deposits at the sea floor. The debris deposits range from elongated bedforms in a topographic trough (indicating probable former ice-stream flow) to layered sediment wedges at the current ice-shelf front (indicating the likely former extent of grounded ice). The vibroseis method is fast and effective allowing for a high volume of data collection. For example, in the 2016/17 season ~280 km of multi-fold seismic reflection data were collected over a 25-day period. Future integration of these results with numerical models will provide a better understanding of past and present interactions between the ice sheet and the solid Earth in Dronning Maud Land, which will in turn improve understanding of future contributions of this region to sea-level rise

    Relevance of field observations as boundary conditions for understanding ice-sheet-ocean interactions

    The direct contact of warm ocean water with the front and base of ice shelves is the main driver for accelerated mass loss of the Antarctic ice sheet. We present a compilation of observations from various projects and methodological approaches applied over the last decade along the Dronning Maud Land coast and highlight their importance for understanding the ice-ocean interactions. With a focus on the Ekstrƶm ice shelf, these include spatially continuous seismic observations in combination with airborne gravity inversion to yield sub-shelf bathymetry and geomorphological evidence of past ice-flow activity; ice-dynamic numerical modelling to investigate the role of seafloor/subglacial substrate characteristics to enhance or reduce ice-sheet extent and advance/retreat rates; sub-shelf CTD measurements to determine ocean properties driving basal melting; satellitebased remote sensing to determine ice-shelf height changes and spatially-distributed basal melting; and point measurements of basal melt with surface-based phase-sensitive radar to determine ocean-driven melt and validate remote-sensing products. As the Dronning Maud Land coast plays a critical role in preconditioning the water mass of the coastal current before it enters the Filcher ice-shelf cavity, we argue that a coordinated inter- and transdisciplinary observational network is required to facilitate monitoring a potential ice-sheet mass loss in this part of Antarctica

    On-ice vibroseis: Sediment features below EkstroĢˆm Ice Shelf, East Antarctica

    An extensive grid of seismic reflection data collected on EkstroĢˆm Ice Shelf, East Antarctica, between 2010ā€“2018, using an on-ice vibroseis source and snowstreamer, are used to reconstruct the glaciological and tectonic history of this region. The data clearly image the outcrop and sub-ice extent of the volcanic Explora Wedge (generated through Jurassic rifting and seafloor spreading). The wedge is overlain by a sequence of truncated, dipping marine-sediment layers. The sediment were likely truncated by former ice advance and subsequent retreat; which has also left evidence in the form topographic over-deepening and glacial debris deposits at the sea floor. The debris deposits range from elongated bedforms in a topographic trough (indicating probable former ice-stream flow) to layered sediment wedges at the current ice-shelf front (indicating the likely former extent of grounded ice). A series of sub-ice shelf geological drilling campaigns in the area will take place (2017-2019) to recover sediments from the sea floor. Combining the topography and material characteristics from vibroseis data with stratigraphic evidence from sediment cores allows a robust reconstruction in this area. Future integration of these results with numerical models will provide a better understanding of past and present interactions between the ice sheet and the solid Earth in Dronning Maud Land, which will in turn improve understanding of future contributions of this region to sea-level rise
