The Landesarchiv Schleswig-Holstein opened the Landesgartenschau 2009 in Schleswig with the exhibition "Die Ordnung der Natur. In 2010, the Hamburg State Archives celebrated its 300th anniversary. The Archives\u27 forerunner was first mentioned in 1293 and thus testified to the preservation of important documents of the city in a central place. But it was not until September 11th, 1710, when Nicolaus Stampeel took office as a scientific archivist at the City of Hamburg. From then on, documents were systematically selected, preserved and indexed. This anniversary was celebrated by the State Archives with a broad programme of events, which included lectures and readings printed in the commemorative volume available here

Diffusion-limited reactions on a two-dimensional lattice with binary disorder

Reaction-diffusion systems where transition rates exhibit quenched disorder are common in physical and chemical systems. We study pair reactions on a periodic two-dimensional lattice, including continuous deposition and spontaneous desorption of particles. Hopping and desorption are taken to be thermally activated processes. The activation energies are drawn from a binary distribution of well depths, corresponding to `shallow' and `deep' sites. This is the simplest non-trivial distribution, which we use to examine and explain fundamental features of the system. We simulate the system using kinetic Monte Carlo methods and provide a thorough understanding of our findings. We show that the combination of shallow and deep sites broadens the temperature window in which the reaction is efficient, compared to either homogeneous system. We also examine the role of spatial correlations, including systems where one type of site is arranged in a cluster or a sublattice. Finally, we show that a simple rate equation model reproduces simulation results with very good accuracy.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

A Novel Vertebrate Eye Using Both Refractive and Reflective Optics

SummarySunlight is attenuated rapidly in the ocean, resulting in little visually useful light reaching deeper than ∌1000 m in even the clearest water [1]. To maximize sensitivity to the relatively brighter downwelling sunlight, to view the silhouette of animals above them, and to increase the binocular overlap of their eyes, many mesopelagic animals have developed upward-pointing tubular eyes [2–4]. However, these sacrifice the ability to detect bioluminescent [5] and reflective objects in other directions. Thus, some mesopelagic fish with tubular eyes extend their visual fields laterally and/or ventrally by lensless ocular diverticula, which are thought to provide unfocused images, allowing only simple detection of objects, with little spatial resolution [2–4]. Here, we show that a medial mirror within the ventrally facing ocular diverticulum of the spookfish, Dolichopteryx longipes, consisting of a multilayer stack derived from a retinal tapetum, is used to reflect light onto a lateral retina. The reflective plates are not orientated parallel to the surface of the mirror. Instead, plate angles change progressively around the mirror, and computer modeling indicates that this provides a well-focused image. This is the first report of an ocular image being formed in a vertebrate eye by a mirror

Successful Resection of a Re-Occurred Pulmonary Myosarcoma in a Patient with Turner Syndrome Mosaic

We describe a patient who underwent thoracic radiation therapy for biopsy-proven pulmonary spindle cell sarcoma in the left lower lobe, 15 months after birth. At the age of 37 she developed shoulder pain, fatigue, and progressive exertion dyspnoea. Chest X-ray revealed a pulmonary mass in the left lower lobe due to a cytology-proven malignant tumour. The patient underwent left pneumonectomy. Histology revealed a myosarcoma of the lung, similar to the previous sarcoma. Furthermore, the patient was diagnosed to have Turner syndrome mosaic and chromosomal analysis revealed a translocation t(1;13) in 3/50 metaphases. However a germline mutation of the p53 tumour suppressor gene was excluded. After 2 years of follow-up the patient is stable and there are no signs of recurrence of the tumour. We conclude a re-occurrence of this very rare malignant disorder of the lung after a 36-year interval in a patient with Turner syndrome mosaic. Following initial curative radiation therapy, with a remission over 36 years, lung resection was now successfully performed

Director configuration of planar solitons in nematic liquid crystals

The director configuration of disclination lines in nematic liquid crystals in the presence of an external magnetic field is evaluated. Our method is a combination of a polynomial expansion for the director and of further analytical approximations which are tested against a numerical shooting method. The results are particularly simple when the elastic constants are equal, but we discuss the general case of elastic anisotropy. The director field is continuous everywhere apart from a straight line segment whose length depends on the value of the magnetic field. This indicates the possibility of an elongated defect core for disclination lines in nematics due to an external magnetic field.Comment: 12 pages, Revtex, 8 postscript figure

BACKGROUND: Idarucizumab, a monoclonal antibody fragment, was developed to reverse the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran. METHODS: We performed a multicenter, prospective, open-label study to determine whether 5 g of intravenous idarucizumab would be able to reverse the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran in patients who had uncontrolled bleeding (group A) or were about to undergo an urgent procedure (group B). The primary end point was the maximum percentage reversal of the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran within 4 hours after the administration of idarucizumab, on the basis of the diluted thrombin time or ecarin clotting time. Secondary end points included the restoration of hemostasis and safety measures. RESULTS: A total of 503 patients were enrolled: 301 in group A, and 202 in group B. The median maximum percentage reversal of dabigatran was 100% (95% confidence interval, 100 to 100), on the basis of either the diluted thrombin time or the ecarin clotting time. In group A, 137 patients (45.5%) presented with gastrointestinal bleeding and 98 (32.6%) presented with intracranial hemorrhage; among the patients who could be assessed, the median time to the cessation of bleeding was 2.5 hours. In group B, the median time to the initiation of the intended procedure was 1.6 hours; periprocedural hemostasis was assessed as normal in 93.4% of the patients, mildly abnormal in 5.1%, and moderately abnormal in 1.5%. At 90 days, thrombotic events had occurred in 6.3% of the patients in group A and in 7.4% in group B, and the mortality rate was 18.8% and 18.9%, respectively. There were no serious adverse safety signals. CONCLUSIONS: In emergency situations, idarucizumab rapidly, durably, and safely reversed the anticoagulant effect of dabigatran. The Complexity of Geodesic Spanners

    Get PDF
A geometric t-spanner for a set S of n point sites is an edge-weighted graph for which the (weighted) distance between any two sites p, q ∈ S is at most t times the original distance between p and q. We study geometric t-spanners for point sets in a constrained two-dimensional environment P. In such cases, the edges of the spanner may have non-constant complexity. Hence, we introduce a novel spanner property: the spanner complexity, that is, the total complexity of all edges in the spanner. Let S be a set of n point sites in a simple polygon P with m vertices. We present an algorithm to construct, for any constant Δ > 0 and fixed integer k ≄ 1, a (2k + Δ)-spanner with complexity O(mn1/k + n log2 n) in O(n log2 n + m log n + K) time, where K denotes the output complexity. When we consider sites in a polygonal domain P with holes, we can construct such a (2k + Δ)-spanner of similar complexity in O(n2 log m + nm log m + K) time. Additionally, for any constant Δ ∈ (0, 1) and integer constant t ≄ 2, we show a lower bound for the complexity of any (t − Δ)-spanner of (Equation presented)

A geometry interface for gyrokinetic microturbulence investigations in toroidal configurations

    Get PDF
The GENE/GIST code package is developed for the investigation of plasma microturbulence, suitable for both stellarator and tokamak configurations. The geometry module is able to process typical equilibrium files and create the interface for the gyrokinetic solver. The analytical description of the method for constructing the geometric elements is documented, together with several numerical evaluation tests. As a concrete application of this product, a cross-machine comparison of the anomalous ion heat diffusivity is presented
