FABRO C.1, VISINTIN A.1, FILACORDA S.1, FRANGIPANE DI REGALBONO A.2, ARTUSO I.3 1Department of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences \u2013 University of Udine 2Department of Experimental Veterinary Science- University of Padua 3Comprensorio Alpino N\ub01 Val Brembana Hunting district Within the hunting district of Val Brembana the presence of parasites along the intestinal tract in 60 individuals (32 adults and 22 juveniles, 6 indeterminate) has been studied and correlated to the reproductive indexes (R.I, measured on 3 and 6 years) of Rock Partridges Alectoris graeca saxatilis in 6 different sectors and the habitat change. Within these sectors the coverage (%) of several environmental classes in different sample areas has been identified through photo interpretation over a time interval of 25 years. In the whole area a high spread of the nematode Ascaridia was observed and high values of prevalence (P = 69.49%) and mean abundance (MA = 15.21) have been found, while the presence of genus Capillaria was low with MA = 0.17 and P = 13.56%. Heterakis was isolated in 33.90% of the Rock Partridges, with MA = 1.45. For Ascaridia and Heterakis the relationship between variance and mean abundance (s2/MA) was significantly greater than one (Ascarids = 48.94; Heterakis: 7.90) and the aggregation index k (s2 / (s2-MA) ) was very close to zero, proving that these parasites show a highly aggregated distribution within host populations. When analyzing separately the 2 age classes there seemed to be no significant difference in parasitic infection susceptibility between juveniles (P = 95.45%) and adults (P = 84.95%). Only MA and P of Heterakis in different sectors was negatively correlated to a change in reproductive success, both in short and medium term, while the sectors with the greatest MA of Ascaridia, both in short and medium term, showed the highest mean reproductive rates and the sectors with the highest k of Capillaria had the highest R.I. The presence of parasites and particularly the value of MA of Capillaria and the average total number of parasites seemed to increase with the decreasing of open areas (coverage) in the different sectors of the study area, as well as with the decreasing of this observed coverage throughout the 25 year period. A negative correlation between open areas and the s2/AM ratio was discovered to be very clear. The presence of open areas seemed to affect significantly the abundance of parasites that in turn seemed to only partially drive R.I changes.     Prediction of Renal Acid Load in Adult Patients on Parenteral Nutrition

    Metabolic acidosis and metabolic bone disease are frequent complications in patients on parenteral nutrition (PN). A common contributor to these complications could be a daily high renal acid load. This study aims to find a method for predicting the potential total acid load (PTAL) and the pH of the compounded parenteral nutrition mixtures. The pH and titratable acidity (TA) of fifty compounded mixtures were measured. The potential metabolic acid load (PMAL) was calculated by considering the amount of nutrients that are acid producers and consumers. The PTAL of the TPN mixtures was calculated by adding TA to PMAL. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to develop a predictive model for the TA and pH of the compounded mixtures. The predicted TA and pH values of the analyzed mixtures agreed with those measured (Passing-Bablok analysis). The PTAL was >50 mmol/day for 82% of the mixtures, >75 mmol/day for 40% of the mixtures, and >100 mmol/day for 22% of the mixtures. The prediction of the renal acid load in patients on long-term PN could allow more appropriate acid-base balancing. Moreover, predicting the pH of such mixtures could be useful to pharmacists to assess the stability and compatibility of the components in the compounded mixtures

    d13C values in archaeological 14C-AMS dated charcoals: assessing mid-Holocene climate fluctuations and human response from a high-resolution isotope record (Arslantepe, Turkey)

    RATIONALE: Past climate has always influenced human adaptation to the environment. In order to reconstruct palaeoclimate fluctuations and their role in the evolution of Near Eastern societies during the mid-Holocene, high-resolution Δ13C records from fossil wood remains at the archaeological site of Arslantepe (eastern Turkey) have been developed. METHODS: After chemical treatment, 13C values were measured by sample combustion flow using a FLASH EA-CHNS instrument interfaced with a Delta V isotope ratio mass spectrometer via a CONFLO III. Two replicates per sample were analysed. The measurement precision was evaluated by propagating variations of the 13C values of samples and V-PDB standards, whereas the accuracy was checked by a quality control sample. To account for changes in atmospheric CO2, Δ13C values were calculated. In addition, 14C/12C ratios were measured by means of ann AMS system (3 MV tandem accelerator). RESULTS: Mean Δ13C curves of deciduous Quercus and Juniperus from archaeological levels between 4700 and 2000 BC (Arslantepe periods VIII-VI D) were produced, where the isotope values were ordered by the available RC ages. Interspecific variations of evergreen vs deciduous plants were postulated for the juniper Δ13C values being higher than 3‰. The seasonal rainfall amount was recorded by the juniper remains, while the water table levels were obtained from the oak samples. CONCLUSIONS: The local climate experienced times of enhanced/reduced precipitation in concert with regional trends. Anomalies in the air mass circulation from the Mediterranean basin also produced oscillations of rainfall amount. In such a frame the Rapid Climate Change dry events had a consistent signature in the Arslantepe Δ13C record, thus potentially contributing to social or organisational changes at the site

    Phenolic and furanic compounds of Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak wood chips

    Botanical species used on aging process must be wisely and judiciously chosen, and for this selection, a basic knowledge of the chemical composition of woods is warranted. Aiming to contribute to extend the knowledge of the chemical composition of several wood species useful for enological purposes, we have focused our studies on Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak chips. The profile of low molecular weight phenolic composition of these chips was achieved, using an optimized extraction method based on pressurized liquid extraction, followed by the quantification of phenolic acids, phenolic aldehydes and furanic derivatives by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD). The identification of those compounds was also confirmed by LC-DAD/ESI-MS. This study allowed the determination of the low molecular phenolic composition of Portuguese chestnut and French, American and Portuguese oak wood. According to our results, the influence of the botanical species seems to be more relevant than the geographic origin of the wood species

    Genome-wide analyses reveal a potential role for the <em>MAPT</em>, <em>MOBP</em>, and <em>APOE </em>loci in sporadic frontotemporal dementia

    \ua9 2024 The Author(s)Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second most common cause of early-onset dementia after Alzheimer disease (AD). Efforts in the field mainly focus on familial forms of disease (fFTDs), while studies of the genetic etiology of sporadic FTD (sFTD) have been less common. In the current work, we analyzed 4,685 sFTD cases and 15,308 controls looking for common genetic determinants for sFTD. We found a cluster of variants at the MAPT (rs199443; p = 2.5 7 10−12, OR = 1.27) and APOE (rs6857; p = 1.31 7 10−12, OR = 1.27) loci and a candidate locus on chromosome 3 (rs1009966; p = 2.41 7 10−8, OR = 1.16) in the intergenic region between RPSA and MOBP, contributing to increased risk for sFTD through effects on expression and/or splicing in brain cortex of functionally relevant in-cis genes at the MAPT and RPSA-MOBP loci. The association with the MAPT (H1c clade) and RPSA-MOBP loci may suggest common genetic pleiotropy across FTD and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) (MAPT and RPSA-MOBP loci) and across FTD, AD, Parkinson disease (PD), and cortico-basal degeneration (CBD) (MAPT locus). Our data also suggest population specificity of the risk signals, with MAPT and APOE loci associations mainly driven by Central/Nordic and Mediterranean Europeans, respectively. This study lays the foundations for future work aimed at further characterizing population-specific features of potential FTD-discriminant APOE haplotype(s) and the functional involvement and contribution of the MAPT H1c haplotype and RPSA-MOBP loci to pathogenesis of sporadic forms of FTD in brain cortex

    Background: In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and several governments planned a national quarantine in order to control the virus spread. Acute psychological effects of quarantine in frail elderly subjects with special needs, such as patients with dementia, have been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess modifications of neuropsychiatric symptoms during quarantine in patients with dementia and their caregivers. Methods: This is a sub-study of a multicenter nation-wide survey. A structured telephone interview was delivered to family caregivers of patients with diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and vascular dementia (VD), followed regularly at 87 Italian memory clinics. Variations in behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) were collected after 1 month since quarantine declaration and associations with disease type, severity, gender, and caregiver\u2019s stress burden were analyzed. Results: A total of 4,913 caregivers participated in the survey. Increased BPSD was reported in 59.6% of patients as worsening of preexisting symptoms (51.9%) or as new onset (26%), and requested drug modifications in 27.6% of these cases. Irritability, apathy, agitation, and anxiety were the most frequently reported worsening symptoms and sleep disorder and irritability the most frequent new symptoms. Profile of BPSD varied according to dementia type, disease severity, and patients\u2019 gender. Anxiety and depression were associated with a diagnosis of AD (OR 1.35, CI: 1.12\u20131.62), mild to moderate disease severity and female gender. DLB was significantly associated with a higher risk of worsening hallucinations (OR 5.29, CI 3.66\u20137.64) and sleep disorder (OR 1.69, CI 1.25\u20132.29), FTD with wandering (OR 1.62, CI 1.12\u20132.35), and change of appetite (OR 1.52, CI 1.03\u20132.25). Stress-related symptoms were experienced by two-thirds of caregivers and were associated with increased patients\u2019 neuropsychiatric burden (p&lt;0.0001). Conclusion: Quarantine induces a rapid increase of BPSD in approximately 60% of patients and stress-related symptoms in two-thirds of caregivers. Health services need to plan a post-pandemic strategy in order to address these emerging needs
