Two dimensional Leidenfrost Droplets in a Hele Shaw Cell
We experimentally and theoretically investigate the behavior of Leidenfrost
droplets inserted in a Hele-Shaw cell. As a result of the confinement from the
two surfaces, the droplet has the shape of a flattened disc and is thermally
isolated from the surface by the two evaporating vapor layers. An analysis of
the evaporation rate using simple scaling arguments is in agreement with the
experimental results. Using the lubrication approximation we numerically
determine the shape of the droplets as a function of its radius. We furthermore
find that the droplet width tends to zero at its center when the radius reaches
a critical value. This prediction is corroborated experimentally by the direct
observation of the sudden transition from a flattened disc into an expending
torus. Below this critical size, the droplets are also displaying capillary
azimuthal oscillating modes reminiscent of a hydrodynamic instability
Gemini Planet Imager Observational Calibrations III: Empirical Measurement Methods and Applications of High-Resolution Microlens PSFs
The newly commissioned Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) combines extreme adaptive
optics, an advanced coronagraph, precision wavefront control and a
lenslet-based integral field spectrograph (IFS) to measure the spectra of young
extrasolar giant planets between 0.9-2.5 um. Each GPI detector image, when in
spectral model, consists of ~37,000 microspectra which are under or critically
sampled in the spatial direction. This paper demonstrates how to obtain
high-resolution microlens PSFs and discusses their use in enhancing the
wavelength calibration, flexure compensation and spectral extraction. This
method is generally applicable to any lenslet-based integral field spectrograph

Titan imagery with Keck adaptive optics during and after probe entry
We present adaptive optics data from the Keck telescope, taken while the Huygens probe descended through Titan's atmosphere and on the days following touchdown. No probe entry signal was detected. Our observations span a solar phase angle range from 0.05° up to 0.8°, with the Sun in the west. Contrary to expectations, the east side of Titan's stratosphere was usually brightest. Compiling images obtained with Keck and Gemini over the past few years reveals that the east-west asymmetry can be explained by a combination of the solar phase angle effect and an enhancement in the haze density on Titan's morning hemisphere. While stratospheric haze was prominent over the northern hemisphere, tropospheric haze dominated the south, from the south pole up to latitudes of ∼45°S. At 2.1 μm this haze forms a polar cap, while at 1.22 μm it appears in the form of a collar at 60°S. A few small clouds were usually present near the south pole, at altitudes of 30–40 km. Our narrowband J,H,K images of Titan's surface compare extremely well with that obtained by Cassini ISS, down to the small-scale features. The surface contrast between dark and bright areas may be larger at 2 μm than at 1.6 and 1.3 μm, which would imply that the dark areas may be covered by a coarser-grained frost than the bright regions and/or that there is additional 2 μm absorption there
Implications of the isotope effects on the magnetization, magnetic torque and susceptibility
We analyze the magnetization, magnetic torque and susceptibility data of
La2-xSrxCu(16,18)O4 and YBa2(63,65)CuO7-x near Tc in terms of the universal
3D-XY scaling relations. It is shown that the isotope effect on Tc mirrors that
on the anisotropy. Invoking the generic behavior of the anisotropy the doping
dependence of the isotope effects on the critical properties, including Tc,
correlation lengths and magnetic penetration depths are traced back to a change
of the mobile carrier concentration.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Properties of the phonon-induced pairing interaction in YBaCuO within the local density approximation
The properties of the phonon-induced interaction between electrons are
studied using the local density approximation (LDA). Restricting the electron
momenta to the Fermi surface we find generally that this interaction has a
pronounced peak for large momentum transfers and that the interband
contributions between bonding and antibonding band are of the same magnitude as
the intraband ones. Results are given for various symmetry averages of this
interaction over the Fermi surface. In particular, we find that the
dimensionless coupling constant in the d-wave channel , relevant for
superconductivity, is only 0.022, i.e., even about ten times smaller than the
small value of the s-wave channel. Similarly, the LDA contribution to the
resistivity is about a factor 10 times smaller than the observed resistivity
suggesting that phonons are not the important low-energy excitations in

Extended Kramers-Moyal analysis applied to optical trapping
The Kramers-Moyal analysis is a well established approach to analyze
stochastic time series from complex systems. If the sampling interval of a
measured time series is too low, systematic errors occur in the analysis
results. These errors are labeled as finite time effects in the literature. In
the present article, we present some new insights about these effects and
discuss the limitations of a previously published method to estimate
Kramers-Moyal coefficients at the presence of finite time effects. To increase
the reliability of this method and to avoid misinterpretations, we extend it by
the computation of error estimates for estimated parameters using a Monte Carlo
error propagation technique. Finally, the extended method is applied to a data
set of an optical trapping experiment yielding estimations of the forces acting
on a Brownian particle trapped by optical tweezers. We find an increased
Markov-Einstein time scale of the order of the relaxation time of the process
which can be traced back to memory effects caused by the interaction of the
particle and the fluid. Above the Markov-Einstein time scale, the process can
be very well described by the classical overdamped Markov model for Brownian

Correlation between oxygen isotope effects on the transition temperature and the magnetic penetration depth in high-temperature superconductors close to optimal doping
The oxygen-isotope (^{16}O/^{18}O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane magnetic
penetration depth \lambda_{ab}(0) in optimally-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} and
La_{1.85}Sr_{0.15}CuO_4, and in slightly underdoped YBa_2Cu_4O_8 and
Y_{0.8}Pr_{0.2}Ba_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta} was studied by means of muon-spin rotation.
A substantial OIE on \lambda_{ab}(0) with an OIE exponent
\beta_O=-d\ln\lambda_{ab}(0)/d\ln M_O\approx - 0.2 (M_O is the mass of the
oxygen isotope), and a small OIE on the transition temperature T_c with an OIE
exponent \alpha_O=-d\ln T_{c}/d \ln M_O\simeq0.02 to 0.1 were observed. The
observation of a substantial isotope effect on \lambda_{ab}(0), even in
cuprates where the OIE on T_c is small, indicates that lattice effects play an
important role in cuprate HTS.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
Oxygen-isotope effect on the in-plane penetration depth in underdoped Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} as revealed by muon-spin rotation
The oxygen-isotope (^16O/^18O) effect (OIE) on the in-plane penetration depth
in underdoped Y_{1-x}Pr_xBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta} was studied by
muon-spin rotation. A pronounced OIE on was observed
with a relative isotope shift of
=-5(2)% for x =0.3 and -9(2)% for
x=0.4. It arises mainly from the oxygen-mass dependence of the in-plane
effective mass . The OIE exponents of T_{c} and of
exhibit a relation that appears to be generic for
