[EN] Today seems like a good day to write, and show in this article, some of the research that has been done, over many years, on the drawings of Saul Steinberg, and which we would like to share with you our attempt to understand and naively master the thoughts of Saul Steinberg, without being able to do so (Figs. 1 and 2).Steinberg’s sharp eye will always infiltrate the lines and colours with which a cartoonist tries to capture life. (2021). Automated chlorine dosage in a simulated drinking water treatment plant: a real case study

    Get PDF
In recent decades, increasing attention has been paid to the sustainability of products and processes, including activities aimed at environmental protection, site reclamation or treatment of contaminated ef¿uents, as well as the valorization of waste through the recovery of resources. Although implemented with ‘noble intentions’, these processes are often highly invasive, unsustain-able and socially unacceptable, as they involve signi¿cant use of chemical products or energy. This Special Issue is aimed at collecting research activities focused on the development of new processes to replace the above-cited obsolete practices. Taking inspiration from real problems and the need to face real cases of contamination or prevent potentially harmful situations, the development and opti-mization of ‘smart’ solutions, i.e., sustainable not only from an environmental point of view but also economically, are discussed in order to encourage as much as possible their actual implementation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

An excessive dosage of chlorine or, conversely, too small a dosage, may breach existing legal regulations on mandatory limits. In DWTP where there is no significant variability in the quality of the water to be treated, a type of control that is proportional to the flow rate in the effluent can have fully satisfactory results. Therefore, Proportional-Integral (PI) control is a rather frequently used solution. However, when there are inherently long delays in the process, variability in the quality of the water to be treated and considerable variations alternative type is needed. This article presents the strategy and results of a control method that proposes a Fuzzy based feed-forward system to complement an existing PI control. The control system results are shown as applied to the DWTP of Barcelona city, producing satisfactory experimental results.Postprint (author's final draft

Advances in immunotherapy for cervical cancer

Cervical cancer; Immunotherapy; RadiotherapyCáncer de cuello uterino; Inmunoterapia; RadioterapiaCàncer de coll uterí; Immunoteràpia; RadioteràpiaCervical cancer still represents a major public health problem, being the fourth most common cancer in incidence and mortality in women worldwide. These figures are unacceptable since cervical cancer, an human papillomavirus-related malignancy, is a largely preventable disease by means of well-established screening and vaccination programs. Patients with recurrent, persistent, or metastatic disease unsuitable for curative therapeutic approaches represent a dismal prognosis population. Until recently, these patients were only candidates for cisplatin-based chemotherapy plus bevacizumab. However, the introduction of immune checkpoint inhibitors has revolutionized the treatment landscape of this disease achieving historical overall survival improvements in both the post-platinum and frontline settings. Interestingly, the clinical development of immunotherapy in cervical cancer is currently advancing to earlier stages of the disease, as the locally advanced setting, whose standard of care has not changed in the last decades with still modest outcomes. As more innovative immunotherapy approaches are in clinical early development in advanced cervical cancer, promising efficacy data are emerging that may shape the future of this disease. This review summarizes the main treatment advances carried out in the field of immunotherapy throughout the past years

    Get PDF

Dental caries in type 1 diabetics : influence of systemic factors of the disease upon the development of dental caries

    Get PDF
Objectives: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common chronic diseases in the general population. A study is made of the presence of caries in type 1 diabetic patients. The specific aim was to determine whether such patients present a greater incidence of dental caries than non-diabetic individuals. An evaluation was also made of the relationship of caries to salivary flow and to factors inherent to the disease such as the degree of metabolic control, the duration of diabetes, and the existence of chronic complications. Study design: The study comprised 90 type 1 diabetics between 18 and 50 years of age, and a group of non-diabetic controls matched for age and sex. Visual and tactile exploration of the dentition was carried out in all cases. Oral hygiene was rated based on the O?Leary plaque index, and basal (unstimulated) and stimulated salivary flow were evaluated in both groups. In the diabetic group, correlations were established with disease control based on the mean glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) value corresponding to the two years prior to examination; evolution of the disease in years; and the existence of complications such as diabetic neuropathy or retinopathy. Results: Under similar conditions of oral hygiene and salivary flow, the diabetic group showed a higher incidence of caries than the control group (p<0.05). Likewise, on specifically analyzing the diabetic group, metabolic control of the disease, the duration of diabetes, and the existence of complications of the disease exerted an influence upon the development of dental caries. Conclusions: Qualitative salivary studies are advised to better account for this increased incidence of caries in the diabetic population
