Measuring attitude toward theistic faith : assessing the Astley-Francis Scale among Christian, Muslim and secular youth in England
Empirical research within the social scientific study of religion in general and within the psychology of religion in particular remains very conscious of the complex nature of its subject matter. Empirical research in this field needs to take cognisance of the many forms in which religion is expressed (say, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism) and the many facets within the forms (say, beliefs, behaviours and affiliation). Working in the 1970s, Francis (1978a; 1978b) advanced the view that the attitudinal dimension of religion offered a particularly fruitful basis for coordinating empirical enquiry into the correlates, antecedents and consequences of religiosity across the life span
Wealth and the Capitalist Spirit
The wealth distribution in the U.S. is more unequal, or skewed to the right, than either the income or earnings distribution, a fact current models of saving behavior have difficulty explaining. Using Max Weber's (1905) idea that individuals may have a `capitalist spirit', I construct and simulate a model where some individuals accumulate wealth for its own sake rather than as deferred consumption. Including capitalist-spirit preferences in the standard life cycle model, with no other modifications, generates a skewness of wealth consistent with that observed in the U.S. economy. Furthermore, capitalist-spirit preferences provide a way to generate decreasing risk aversion with increases in wealth without resorting to idiosyncratic rates of time preference.capitalist spirit, life cycle, wealth
IceCube: Neutrinos Associated with Cosmic Rays
After a brief review of the status of the kilometer-scale neutrino
observatory IceCube, we discuss the prospect that such detectors discover the
still-enigmatic sources of cosmic rays. After all, this aspiration set the
scale of the instrument. While only a smoking gun is missing for the case that
the Galactic component of the cosmic-ray spectrum originates in supernova
remnants, the origin of the extragalactic component remains as inscrutable as
ever. We speculate on the role of the nearby active galaxies Centaurus A and

Psychological type and attitude towards Celtic Christianity among committed Churchgoers in the United Kingdom: an empirical study
This article takes the burgeoning interest in Celtic Christianity as a key example of the way in which churches may be responding to the changing spiritual and religious landscape in the United Kingdom today and examines the power of psychological type theory to account for variation in the attitude of committed churchgoers to this innovation. Data provided by a sample of 248 Anglican clergy and lay church officers (who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales together with the Attitude toward Celtic Christianity Scale) demonstrated that intuitive types, feeling types, and perceiving types reported a more positive attitude towards Celtic Christianity than sensing types, thinking types, and judging types. These findings are interpreted to analyse the appeal of Celtic Christianity and to suggest why some committed churchgoers may find this innovation less attractive
Work-related psychological health and psychological type among lead elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom
Building on a series of recent studies concerned with assessing work-related psychological health and psychological type among various groups of church leaders, this study reports new data provided by 134 Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches in the United Kingdom who completed the Francis Psychological Type Scales (FPTS) together with the two scales of the Francis Burnout Inventory (FBI) concerned with emotional exhaustion and satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches reported lower levels of emotional exhaustion and higher levels of satisfaction in ministry. Compared with other groups of church leaders, there was a higher proportion of extraverts among Lead Elders within the Newfrontiers network of churches. There was only a weak association between psychological type and burnout
Pollution Prevention and Business Management. Curricula for Schools of Business and Public Health. Volume 1: Modules 1-3
These instructional modules are based on the premise that sustained economic development is
dependent upon sustained protection ofthe environment. They also reflect the fact that preventing
waste is far more cost effective than managing the waste once it is generated. Pollution prevention
not only offers businesses a competitive opportunity, it is a natural extension of sound management
practices. Incorporating pollution prevention into business management and government regulation
will enhance longterm economic prosperity.published or submitted for publicatio
Psychological types of bilingual and monolingual female undergraduate students in Wales
The aim of this study was to complete the psychological type profiles of bilingual (fluent Welsh speakers) and monolingual (nonWelsh-speakers) students in Wales. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® instrument was completed by 425 female undergraduate students attending a university-sector college in Wales that exercises a bilingual policy (English and Welsh). From the total sample, 102 subjects identified themselves as fluent Welsh-speakers (bilinguals) and 101 as nonWelsh-speakers (monolinguals). The remaining 222 were Welsh learners and were excluded from the analyses of the present study. SRTT analyses revealed that in the study sample, the bilingual students demonstrated significantly more frequent preferences for Extraversion and for Sensing compared with the monolingual students
