    Masgomas-4: Physical characterization of a double-core obscured cluster with a massive and very young stellar population

    The discovery of new, obscured massive star clusters has changed our understanding of the Milky Way star-forming activity from a passive to a very active star-forming machine. The search for these obscured clusters is strongly supported by the use of all-sky, near-IR surveys. The main goal of the MASGOMAS project is to search for and study unknown, young, and massive star clusters in the Milky Way, using near-IR data. Here we try to determine the main physical parameters (distance, size, total mass, and age) of Masgomas-4, a new double-core obscured cluster. Using near-IR photometry (JJ, HH, and KSK_S) we selected a total of 21 stars as OB-type star candidates. Multi-object, near-IR follow-up spectroscopy allowed us to carry out the spectral classification of the OB-type candidates. Of the 21 spectroscopically observed stars, ten are classified as OB-type stars, eight as F- to early G-type dwarf stars, and three as late-type giant stars. Spectroscopically estimated distances indicate that the OB-type stars belong to the same cluster, located at a distance of 1.90−0.90+1.281.90^{+1.28}_{-0.90} kpc. Our spectrophotometric data confirm a very young and massive stellar population, with a clear concentration of pre-main-sequence massive candidates (Herbig Ae/Be) around one of the cluster cores. The presence of a surrounding HII cloud and the Herbig Ae/Be candidates indicate an upper age limit of 5 Myr.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&

    Beyond the Hubble Deep Field Limiting Magnitude: Faint Galaxy Number Counts from Surface-Brightness Fluctuations

    The faint end of the differential galaxy number counts, n(m), in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF) North has been determined for the F450W, F606W, and F814W filters by means of surface-brightness fluctuation (SBF) measurements. This technique allows us to explore n(m) beyond the limiting magnitude of the HDF, providing new, stronger constraints on the faint end of n(m). This has allowed us to test the validity of previous number count studies and to produce a new determination of the faint end of n(m) for magnitudes fainter than 28.8 in the AB system and to extend this estimate down to 31. This value represents an extension of more than two magnitudes beyond the limits of previous photometric studies.     ACon: A learning-based approach to deal with uncertainty in contextual requirements at runtime

    Context: Runtime uncertainty such as unpredictable operational environment and failure of sensors that gather environmental data is a well-known challenge for adaptive systems. Objective: To execute requirements that depend on context correctly, the system needs up-to-date knowledge about the context relevant to such requirements. Techniques to cope with uncertainty in contextual requirements are currently underrepresented. In this paper we present ACon (Adaptation of Contextual requirements), a data-mining approach to deal with runtime uncertainty affecting contextual requirements. Method: ACon uses feedback loops to maintain up-to-date knowledge about contextual requirements based on current context information in which contextual requirements are valid at runtime. Upon detecting that contextual requirements are affected by runtime uncertainty, ACon analyses and mines contextual data, to (re-)operationalize context and therefore update the information about contextual requirements. Results: We evaluate ACon in an empirical study of an activity scheduling system used by a crew of 4 rowers in a wild and unpredictable environment using a complex monitoring infrastructure. Our study focused on evaluating the data mining part of ACon and analysed the sensor data collected onboard from 46 sensors and 90,748 measurements per sensor. Conclusion: ACon is an important step in dealing with uncertainty affecting contextual requirements at runtime while considering end-user interaction. ACon supports systems in analysing the environment to adapt contextual requirements and complements existing requirements monitoring approaches by keeping the requirements monitoring specification up-to-date.     Risk assessment in open source systems

    Adopting Open Source Software (OSS) components offers many advantages to organizations but also introduces risks related to the intrinsic fluidity of the OSS development projects. Choosing the right components is a critical decision, as it could contribute to the success of any adoption process. Making the right decision requires to evaluate the technical capabilities of the components and also related strategic aspects, including possible impacts on high level objectives. This can be achieved through a portfolio of risk assessment and mitigation methods. In this briefing we introduce the basic concepts related to OSS ecosystems and to risk representation and reasoning. We illustrate how risk management activities in OSS can benefit from the large amount of data available from OSS repositories and how they can be connected to business goals for strategic decision-making.     [Resumen] El Corral del Veleta fue el último reducto glaciar de Sierra Nevada. Desde el Tardiglaciar la deglaciación ha sido progresiva, aunque con fluctuaciones de retroceso-avance. Respecto a la Pequeña Edad del Hielo se detectan diferentes fases con morfologías significativas y en cuanto a los tiempos posteriores la morfogénesis denuncia una merma paulatina del glaciar. En la actualidad el Corral sólo alberga pequeñas placas de hielo adosadas a las paredes. En profundidad parecen existir masas heladas (¿pergelisol?, ¿hielo?) en proceso de fusión.[Abstract] The Corral del Veleta has been the last residual glacier of the Sierra Nevada. Since late glacial times deglaciation has been progressive, interrupted by glacier advance-retrocession fluctuations. The Little Ice Age covers diferent morphological stages.     Extracting Hα\alpha flux from photometric data in the J-PLUS survey

    We present the main steps that will be taken to extract Hα\alpha emission flux from Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) photometric data. For galaxies with z≲0.015z\lesssim0.015, the Hα\alpha+[NII] emission is covered by the J-PLUS narrow-band filter F660F660. We explore three different methods to extract the Hα\alpha + [NII] flux from J-PLUS photometric data: a combination of a broad-band and a narrow-band filter (r′r' and F660F660), two broad-band and a narrow-band one (r′r', i′i' and F660F660), and a SED-fitting based method using 8 photometric points. To test these methodologies, we simulated J-PLUS data from a sample of 7511 SDSS spectra with measured Hα\alpha flux. Based on the same sample, we derive two empirical relations to correct the derived Hα\alpha+[NII] flux from dust extinction and [NII] contamination. We find that the only unbiased method is the SED fitting based one. The combination of two filters underestimates the measurements of the Hα\alpha + [NII] flux by a 28%, while the three filters method by a 9%. We study the error budget of the SED-fitting based method and find that, in addition to the photometric error, our measurements have a systematic uncertainty of a 4.3%. Several sources contribute to this uncertainty: differences between our measurement procedure and the one used to derive the spectroscopic values, the use of simple stellar populations as templates, and the intrinsic errors of the spectra, which were not taken into account. Apart from that, the empirical corrections for dust extinction and [NII] contamination add an extra uncertainty of 14%. Given the J-PLUS photometric system, the best methodology to extract Hα\alpha + [NII] flux is the SED-fitting based one. Using this method, we are able to recover reliable Hα\alpha fluxes for thousands of nearby galaxies in a robust and homogeneous way.Comment: 11 pages, 14 figures.     The miniJPAS survey : A preview of the Universe in 56 colors

    The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will scan thousands of square degrees of the northern sky with a unique set of 56 filters using the dedicated 2.55 m Javalambre Survey Telescope (JST) at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Prior to the installation of the main camera (4.2 deg(2) field-of-view with 1.2 Gpixels), the JST was equipped with the JPAS-Pathfinder, a one CCD camera with a 0.3 deg(2) field-of-view and plate scale of 0.23 arcsec pixel(-1). To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, the JPAS-Pathfinder camera was used to perform miniJPAS, a similar to 1 deg(2) survey of the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip). The field was observed with the 56 J-PAS filters, which include 54 narrow band (FWHM similar to 145 angstrom) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the u, g, r, i SDSS broad band filters. In this miniJPAS survey overview paper, we present the miniJPAS data set (images and catalogs), as we highlight key aspects and applications of these unique spectro-photometric data and describe how to access the public data products. The data parameters reach depths of mag(AB) similar or equal to 22-23.5 in the 54 narrow band filters and up to 24 in the broader filters (5 sigma in a 3 '' aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalog contains more than 64 000 sources detected in the r band and with matched photometry in all other bands. This catalog is 99% complete at r = 23.6 (r = 22.7) mag for point-like (extended) sources. We show that our photometric redshifts have an accuracy better than 1% for all sources up to r = 22.5, and a precision of 2. The miniJPAS survey demonstrates the capability of the J-PAS filter system to accurately characterize a broad variety of sources and paves the way for the upcoming arrival of J-PAS, which will multiply this data by three orders of magnitude.Peer reviewe

    Discovery of a young and massive stellar cluster: Spectrophotometric near-infrared study of Masgomas-1

    Context: Recent near-infrared data have contributed to the discovery of new (obscured) massive stellar clusters and massive stellar populations in previously known clusters in our Galaxy. These discoveries lead us to view the Milky Way as an active star-forming machine. Aims: The main purpose of this work is to determine physically the main parameters (distance, size, total mass and age) of Masgomas-1, the first massive cluster discovered by our systematic search programme. Methods: Using near-infrared (J, H, and Ks) photometry we selected 23 OB-type and five red supergiant candidates for multi-object H- and K-spectroscopy and spectral classification. Results: Of the 28 spectroscopically observed stars, 17 were classified as OB-type, four as supergiants, one as an A-type dwarf star, and six as late-type giant stars. The presence of a supergiant population implies a massive nature of Masgomas-1, supported by our estimate of the cluster initial total mass of (1.94\pm0.28)\cdot10^4 M_{sun}, obtained after integrating of the cluster mass function. The distance estimate of 3.53 kpc locates the cluster closer than the Scutum--Centaurus base but still within that Galactic arm. The presence of an O9V star and red supergiants in the same population indicates that the cluster age is in the range of 8 to 10 Myr.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, A&A accepte

    A goal-based round-trip method for system development

    In most cases information system development can be seen as an exercise of business process reengineering, either because it automates some human-based processes or because a legacy system is going to be replaced. From this point of view, we can say that the specification of the system-to-be goes from the observation and analysis of the current system to the specification of the system-to-be, going through the construction and evaluation of alternatives. Goal-oriented models are a valuable formalism to support the strategic analysis of the current process. In this paper, we propose a method supporting that round-trip engineering process, focusing in the prescriptive construction of strategic i* models and the systematic generation of alternatives.
