    Multipole decomposition of LDA+UU energy and its application to actinides compounds

    A general reformulation of the exchange energy of 5f5f-shell is applied in the analysis of the magnetic structure of various actinides compounds in the framework of LDA+U method. The calculations are performed in an efficient scheme with essentially only one free parameter, the screening length. The results are analysed in terms of different polarisation channels, due to different multipoles. Generally it is found that the spin-orbital polarisation is dominating. This can be viewed as a strong enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling in these systems. This leads to a drastic decrease in spin polarisation, in accordance with experiments. The calculations are able to correctly differentiate magnetic and non-magnetic Pu system. Finally, in all magnetic systems a new multipolar order is observed, whose polarisation energy is often larger in magnitude than that of spin polarisation.Comment: Fixed some references and picture

    Itinerant magnetic multipole moments of rank five, triakontadipoles, as the hidden order in URu2_{2}Si2_{2}

    A broken symmetry ground state without any magnetic moments has been calculated by means of local-density-approximation to density functional theory plus a local exchange term, the so-called LDA+UU approach, for URu2_{2}Si2_{2}. The solution is analysed in terms of a multipole tensor expansion of the itinerant density matrix and is found to be a non-trivial magnetic multipole. Analysis and further calculations show that this type of multipole enters naturally in time reversal breaking in presence of large effective spin-orbit coupling and co-exists with magnetic moments for most magnetic actinidesComment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Exchange energy dominated by large orbital spin-currents in δ\delta-Pu

    The electronic structure of the anomalous δ\delta-phase of Pu is analyzed by a general and exact reformulation of the exchange energy of the ff-shell. It is found that the dominating contribution to the exchange energy is a polarization of orbital spin-currents that preserves the time reversal symmetry, hence a non-magnetic solution in accordance with experiments. The analysis brings a unifying picture of the role of exchange in the 5f5f-shell with its relatively strong spin-orbit coupling. The results are in good accordance with recent measurements of the branching ratio for the dd to ff transition in the actinides.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, 2 table

    High-order harmonic generation in fullerenes using few-and multi-cycle pulses of different wavelengths

    We present the results of experimental and theoretical studies of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in plasmas containing fullerenes using pulses of different duration and wavelength. We find that the harmonic cutoff is extended in the case of few-cycle pulses (3.5 fs, 29th harmonic) compared to longer laser pulses (40 fs, 25th harmonic) at the same intensity. Our studies also include HHG in fullerenes using 1300 and 780 nm multicycle (35 and 40 fs) pulses. For 1300 nm pulses, an extension of the harmonic cutoff to the 41st order was obtained, with a decrease in conversion efficiency that is consistent with theoretical predictions based on wave packet spreading for single atoms.     Anastomosis configuration and technique following ileocaecal resection for Crohn's disease: a multicentre study

    A limited ileocaecal resection is the most frequently performed procedure for ileocaecal CD and different anastomotic configurations and techniques have been described. This manuscript audited the different anastomotic techniques used in a national study and evaluated their influence on postoperative outcomes following ileocaecal resection for primary CD. This is a retrospective, multicentre, observational study promoted by the Italian Society of Colorectal Surgery (SICCR), including all adults undergoing elective ileocaecal resection for primary CD from June 2018 May 2019. Postoperative morbidity within 30 days of surgery was the primary endpoint. Postoperative length of hospital stay (LOS) and anastomotic leak rate were the secondary outcomes. 427 patients were included. The side to side anastomosis was the chosen configuration in 380 patients (89%). The stapled anastomotic (n = 286; 67%), techniques were preferred to hand-sewn (n = 141; 33%). Postoperative morbidity was 20.3% and anastomotic leak 3.7%. Anastomotic leak was independent of the type of anastomosis performed, while was associated with an ASA grade ≥ 3, presence of perianal disease and ileocolonic localization of disease. Four predictors of LOS were identified after multivariate analysis. The laparoscopic approach was the only associated with a reduced LOS (p = 0.017), while age, ASA grade ≥ 3 or administration of preoperative TPN were associated with increased LOS. The side to side was the most commonly used anastomotic configuration for ileocolic reconstruction following primary CD resection. There was no difference in postoperative morbidity according to anastomotic technique and configuration.     EBF1, MYO6 and CALR expression levels predict therapeutic response in diffuse large B-cell lymphomas

    BackgroundDiffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a hematological malignancy representing one-third of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cases. Notwithstanding immunotherapy in combination with chemotherapy (R-CHOP) is an effective therapeutic approach for DLBCL, a subset of patients encounters treatment resistance, leading to low survival rates. Thus, there is an urgent need to identify predictive biomarkers for DLBCL including the elderly population, which represents the fastest-growing segment of the population in Western countries.MethodsGene expression profiles of n=414 DLBCL biopsies were retrieved from the public dataset GSE10846. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) (fold change >1.4, p-value <0.05, n=387) have been clustered in responder and non-responder patient cohorts. An enrichment analysis has been performed on the top 30 up-regulated genes of responder and non-responder patients to identify the signatures involved in gene ontology (MSigDB). The more significantly up-regulated DEGs have been validated in our independent collection of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) biopsy samples of elderly DLBCL patients, treated with R-CHOP as first-line therapy.ResultsFrom the analysis of two independent cohorts of DLBCL patients emerged a gene signature able to predict the response to R-CHOP therapy. In detail, expression levels of EBF1, MYO6, CALR are associated with a significant worse overall survival.ConclusionsThese results pave the way for a novel characterization of DLBCL biomarkers, aiding the stratification of responder versus non-responder patients

    National variations in perioperative assessment and surgical management of Crohn's disease: a multicentre study

    Aim: Crohn's disease (CD) requires a multidisciplinary approach and surgery should be undertaken by dedicated colorectal surgeons with audited outcomes. We present a national, multicentre study, with the aim to collect benchmark data on key performance indicators in CD surgery, to highlight areas where standards of CD surgery excel and to facilitate targeted quality improvement where indicated. Methods: All patients undergoing ileocaecal or redo ileocolic resection in the participating centres for primary and recurrent CD from June 2018 to May 2019 were included. The main objective was to collect national data on hospital volume and practice variations. Postoperative morbidity was the primary outcome. Laparoscopic surgery and stoma rate were the secondary outcomes. Results: In all, 715 patients were included: 457 primary CD and 258 recurrent CD with a postoperative morbidity of 21.6% and 34.7%, respectively. Laparoscopy was used in 83.8% of primary CD compared to 31% of recurrent CD. Twenty-five hospitals participated and the total number of patients per hospital ranged from 2 to 169. Hospitals performing more than 10 primary CD procedures per year showed a higher adoption of laparoscopy and bowel sparing surgery. Conclusions: There is significant heterogeneity in the number of CD surgeries performed per year nationally in Italy. Our data suggest that high-volume hospitals perform more complex procedures, with a higher adoption of bowel sparing surgery. The rate of laparoscopy in high-volume hospitals is higher for primary CD but not for recurrent CD compared with low-volume hospitals

    Electronic structure calculations constitute a valuable tool to predict the properties of materials. In this study we propose an efficient scheme to study correlated electron systems with essentially only one free parameter, the screening length of the Coulomb potential. A general reformulation of the exchange energy of the correlated electron shell is combined with this method in order to analyze the calculations. The results are interpreted in terms of different polarization channels, due to different multipoles. The method is applied to various actinide compounds, in order to increase the understanding of the complicate behaviour of 5f electrons in these systems. We studied the non-magnetic phase of δ-Pu, where the spin polarization is taken over by a spin-orbit-like term that does not break the time reversal symmetry. We also find that a non-trivial high multipole of the magnetization density, the triakontadipole, constitutes the ordering parameter in the mysterious hidden order phase of the heavy-fermion superconductor URu2Si2. This type of multipolar ordering is also found to play an essential role in the hexagonal-based superconductors UPd2Al3,  UNi2Al3 and UPt3 and in the dioxide insulators UO2, NpO2 and PuO2. The triakontadipole moments are also present in all magnetic actinides we considered, except for Cm. These results led us to formulate a new set of rules for the ground state of a system, that are valid in presence of strong spin-orbit coupling interaction instead of those of Hund; the Katt's rules. Finally, we applied our method to a new class of high-Tc superconductors, the Fe-pnictides, where the Fe 3d electrons are moderately correlated.
