Perceptions of Prison Guards by Prison Visitors and Nonvisitors

Social interaction has been found to be a large factor in the recidivism of criminals. Many prison inmates have limited access to social interaction with other inmates as well as those outside of prison. This creates tension between inmates, guards, and society. The breakdown of barriers to open communication between inmates and others may be beneficial to the rehabilitation of criminals. Providing more access to visitations, telephone calls, and electronic mail reduces inmate aggression and encourages compliance to the prison and social rules. In addition, interaction with those outside of the prison acts as a continual reminder to an inmate that the accepted behavior within the prison walls is very different from that of regular society. This study revealed significant differences between the attitudes toward prison guards between visitors and nonvisitors in relation to friendliness, warmth, respectfulness, impartiality, and inspiration. In each of these areas, visitors tended to have a more positive attitude toward prison guards than nonvisitors. No significant differences between the attitudes towards prison guards were found between visitors and nonvisitors in relation to professionalism, support, helpfulness, social, or adaptability

Lost in Adaptation: Antifidelity and/in Mike De Leon’s Bilanggo sa Dilim and Bayaning 3rd World

Following the tenets of auteur criticism that proposes a film auteur to have an autonomous, original, and individual voice despite the nature of filmmaking as an art form that follows the Fordist model, this essay looks at how Mike De Leon’s artistic style has become the ordering agent for his two films: Bilanggo sa Dilim and Bayaning 3rd World. This study puts under the lens De Leon’s signature and confronts the difficulty of assigning authorship and originality within a collaborative, institutionalized medium that aims to adapt for the screen one literary and one historical material. De Leon has his own way of reclaiming an adapted work and a historical figure, and by wrestling Bilanggo sa Dilim away from the pages of the novel and by being unfaithful and transgressive in adapting Jose Rizal in Bayaning 3rd World, the filmmaker creates a space for himself and his signature in his cinematic transmediations

almost every thing except nature would remind you of decay. Our Hills & Mountains & Rocks of Granite would be a Substitute for your Scottish Highlands . The same stream of water runs before the door that has since my remembrance as clear as chrystal. Some of the shrubs that I planted years ago are still alive. I am enjoying myself very much here tho I am not able to wait upon myself much. I hope that a few months among the mountains will revive and recruit me. If my little Fannie had lived she would have been 3 years old this month. What a com- fort and blessing - if she had lived - but my loss is her gain 190 00299 Middlefield, Mass July 11th, 1862. My dear friend John You have doubtless thought that Mrs Pelton had forgotten John Muir and her promise to continue a correspondence with him - Well, let me explain - The last time you wrote me but one, you were just going to teach in the country, and forgot to tell me where to direct a letter. The last letter I received I have not been able to answer until now. You see from this thatPlease write me and direct to Middlefield Mass I have left Emily with her Uncle Our House is a Hotel now I suppose you have heard beforeEver remember your old friend Mrs Pelton I am in Mass with my friend or Parents I should have said My health has been very poor since winter. One of my lungs has been quite diseased. I was not able to travel but had company and was very anxious to be with my mother you know that we always feel, when we are sick that no one can do for us like a mother __ Well John how is it with you. You have been home and are back in school again. It seems that you are going to continue on through __ And what then __ What are you going to make Are you going to follow some business that will call out your mechanical genius as are you going totake some profession. Whatever you may do, I sincerely hope you may never be influenced to give up the honest pure minded sen- timents of your heart, foun- ded upon the love of Christ I used to think I seldom, if ever, saw a person less contaminated with wordly associations, and influences, than yourself. The Christian character is beautiful, when it is to be found in its purity. But that is not often this side of the spirit world John I wish you were here. [4] who died that we might live. John, pray for me and my family, that we may all be sharers in that great salvation. Mr Radclif has left this town to preach at De Soto, a town upon the river north of here. Not many tears shed about his depart- ture. I went over to McGregor last Sabbath and heard the Baptist minister, Mr. Moor -- liked him very well. I must close. Little Fannie is sitting by the side of me trying to get hold of my paper. She sends you a great many kisses, and says [she] wishes John would come back again. Write soon Ever your true friend, F. N. Pelton00259[1] Prairie du Chin, Feb. 3d, \u2761 Well John, I really ought to be ashamed not to have answered your kind letter before this time - but be assured it is not because I had forgotten to do so. I intended to have done so, a week ago, but for some reason I have not found myself with pen in hand, until now. Your name has been mentioned almost every day since you left. We were really lonely without you -- by we I mean those of us who used to sit in the little sitting room around the writing desk. [2] We are all quite well -- even Little Fannie , is getting quite strong. She can walk about by chairs and will soon walk quite alone. I think she would know you. She can speak several words quite distinctly. I hope and pray that her life, which has seemed as frail, may be spared to be a blessing to us in after years. If here parents are not spared to enjoy her society she may make herself useful to others. Surely we know not what a day may bring forth, and how little do we realize it. We are getting along about as we were when you were [here]. Ezra does the chores about the house. Our family[3] is not as large as it was. Cate is gone, and in her place I have a Sarah. Miss Merrill is talking of going soon. John, we have wished you were here many a time since you left. How have you got along at your new business. You must write and let us hear all about your success. You are very kindly remembered by all, and enquired after. Now you must remember your promise to write me occasionally as long as you live. We shall ever be happy to hear of your prosperity we have one common interest in securing an interest in that Savio

Educational weight loss interventions in obese and overweight adults with type 2 diabetes : a systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials

Aim The worldwide prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus is increasing, with most individuals with the disease being overweight or obese. Weight loss can reduce disease‐related morbidity and mortality and weight losses of 10–15 kg have been shown to reverse type 2 diabetes. This review aimed to determine the effectiveness of community‐based educational interventions for weight loss in type 2 diabetes. Methods This is a systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCT) in obese or overweight adults, aged 18–75 years, with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Primary outcomes were weight and/or BMI. CINAHL, MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) were searched from inception to June 2019. Trials were classified into specified a priori comparisons according to intervention type. A pooled standardized mean difference (SMD) (from baseline to follow‐up) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) between trial groups (difference‐in‐difference) were estimated through random‐effects meta‐analyses using the inverse variance method. Heterogeneity was quantified using I2 and publication bias was explored visually using funnel plots. Results Some 7383 records were screened; 228 full‐text articles were assessed and 49 RCTs (n = 12 461 participants) were included in this review, with 44 being suitable for inclusion into the meta‐analysis. Pooled estimates of education combined with low‐calorie, low‐carbohydrate meal replacements (SMD = –2.48, 95% CI –3.59, –1.49, I2 = 98%) or diets (SMD = –1.25, 95% CI –2.11, –0.39, I2 = 95%) or low‐fat meal replacements (SMD = –1.15, 95%CI –2.05, –1.09, I2 = 85%) appeared most effective. Conclusion Low‐calorie, low‐carbohydrate meal replacements or diets combined with education appear the most promising interventions to achieve the largest weight and BMI reductions in people with type 2 diabetes
