Vermelho Amargo, work by the contemporary writer from Minas Gerais, Bartolomeu
Campos de QueirĂłs, published in 2011, is rooted in the theme of the memory of his
childhood, suggesting a reflection on the characteristics of the time and the location
of these memories. The narrative is set up as poetic prose, written in the first person,
presenting the story of a narrator-character who, in his maturity, revisits the
significant places of his childhood and recreates the sensations experienced in a
childhood marked by the lack of love. The plot has a non-linear timing, composed of
fragments of scenes of the everyday life. Vermelho Amargo is a text marked by the
spaces inhabited in the childhood and, more specifically, in the restricted space of
the birthplace for characters involved in this universe, internalized in their anxieties
and aspirations. As a result of these particularities of the work, the indefinite time of
the childhood and the strength of the childhood home, it was chosen to focus this
study on the analysis of the narrative elements, time and space. Among the
theoretical sources that give support to this research, are the considerations of
Gaston Bachelard and the assumptions of Walter Benjamin, present throughout the
study. Compartments of sweetness, sorrow, secrets, discoveries converge on the
textual architecture where memories transit and spectra from the past and torments
from the present are hidden.
Study of ecological influence of fire on fauna in mediterranean ecosystems (soil and above-ground layer). Patterns of post-fire recovery
The effects of wild fire on the fauna (soil arthropods and small mammals) were studied in the AlbÚres chain (Pyrénées Orientales, France). After fire, the vegetation structure tends to go back to the pre-fire situation. Retrogressive ecosystems (i.e. grasslands3 maquis) rapidly return to the pre-fire situation, while forest restoration is very slow.
Fire destroys the litter layer and induces strong changes in the humus biological activities. It induces an immediate loss of animals, and also a delayed mortality. But almost all species may recolonize their habitat.
In open habitat, characterized by a high primary production where the herbivores /predators system dominates, the recovery is rapid. On the other hand, in woodlands where the necrÎmass dominates (decomposers system), the disturbances are very strong and the recolonization takes a very long time with many transitional stages.Athias-Binche Françoise, Briard Justine, Fons Roger, Sommer Francisca. Comparison at the microscopic scale of mixed fatty acid-protein Langmuir-Blodgett films resulting from horizontal or vertical transfer
Mixed Langmuir films in which behenic acid and glucose oxidase are associated have been transferred by vertical or horizontal lifting methods onto pyrolytic graphite. The resulting films have been compared by scanning electron microscopy and by scanning force microscopy. The structures observed at the microscopic scale are different for the two transfer techniques in terms of homogeneity, dimensions and orientations. At a nanoscopic scale however, the organization of enzyme molecules is quite analogous in both cases.
Crystal structure of the IrrE protein, a central regulator of DNA damage repair in deinococcaceae.
International audienceDeinococcaceae are famous for their extreme radioresistance. Transcriptome analysis in Deinococcus radiodurans revealed a group of genes up-regulated in response to desiccation and ionizing radiation. IrrE, a novel protein initially found in D. radiodurans, was shown to be a positive regulator of some of these genes. Deinococcus deserti irrE is able to restore radioresistance in a D. radiodurans DeltairrE mutant. The D. deserti IrrE crystal structure reveals a unique combination of three domains: one zinc peptidase-like domain, one helix-turn-helix motif and one GAF-like domain. Mutant analysis indicates that the first and third domains are critical regions for radiotolerance. In particular, mutants affected in the putative zinc-binding site are as sensitive to gamma and UV irradiation as the DeltairrE bacteria, and radioresistance is strongly decreased with the H217L mutation present in the C-terminal domain. In addition, modeling of IrrE-DNA interaction suggests that the observed IrrE structure may not bind double-stranded DNA through its central helix-turn-helix motif and that IrrE is not a classic transcriptional factor that activates gene expression by its direct binding to DNA. We propose that the putative protease activity of IrrE could be a key element of transcription enhancement and that a more classic transcription factor, possibly an IrrE substrate, would link IrrE to transcription of genes specifically involved in radioresistance
Complex oligomeric structure of a truncated form of DdrA: A protein required for the extreme radiotolerance of Deinococcus.
In order to preserve their genome integrity, organisms have developed elaborate tactics for genome protection and repair. The Deinococcus radiodurans bacteria famous for their extraordinary tolerance toward high doses of radiations or long period of desiccation, possess some specific genes with unknown function which are related to their survival in such extreme conditions. Among them, ddrA is an orphan gene specific of Deinococcus genomes. DdrA, the product of this gene was suggested to be a component of the DNA end protection system. Here we provide a three-dimensional reconstruction of the Deinococcus deserti DdrA((1-160)) by electron microscopy. Although not functional in vivo, this truncated protein keeps its DNA binding ability at the wild-type level. DdrA((1-160)) has a complex three-dimensional structure based on a heptameric ring that can self-associate to form a larger molecular weight assembly. We suggest that the complex architecture of DdrA plays a role in the substrate specificity and favors an efficient DNA repair
