    Fourier-Transform infrared spectroscopy of ethyl lactate decomposition and thin-film coating in a filamentary and a glow dielectric barrier discharge

    Glow and filamentary regimes of atmospheric pressure plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition in a planar dielectric barrier discharge configuration were compared for thin-film deposition from ethyl lactate (EL). EL decomposition in the plasma phase and thin-film composition were both characterized by Fourier- transform infrared spectroscopy. EL chemical bonds' concentration along the gas flow decreases progressively in the glow dielectric barrier discharge (GDBD), whereas it drastically oscillates in the filamentary dielectric barrier discharge (FDBD), with values higher than that of the initial mixture. EL decomposition route depends on the discharge regime, as the decrease of the concentration of the different investigated bonds is different for an identical amount of energy provided to EL molecules. CO2 is systematically formed reaching concentrations of 25 and 40 ppm, respectively, in FDBD and GDBD

    La realidad virtual como herramienta versátil de investigación, difusión y mediación en las humanidades

    [EN] The VESPACE project aims to revive an evening of theatre at the Foire Saint-Germain in Paris in the 18th century, by recreating spaces, atmospheres and theatrical entertainment in virtual reality. The venues of this fair have disappeared without leaving any archaeological traces, so their digital reconstruction requires the use of many different sources, including the expertise of historians, historians of theatre and literature. In this article, we present how we have used video game creation tools to enable the use of virtual reality in three key stages of research in the human sciences and particularly in history or archaeology: preliminary research, scientific dissemination and mediation with the general public. In particular, we detail the methodology used to design a three-dimensional (3D) model that is suitable for both research and virtual reality visualization, meets the standards of scientific work regarding precision and accuracy, and the requirements of a real-time display. This model becomes an environment in which experts can be immersed within their fields of research and expertise, and thus extract knowledge reinforcing the model created –through comments, serendipity and new perspectives– while enabling a multidisciplinary workflow. We also present our tool for annotating and consulting sources, relationships and hypotheses in immersion, called PROUVÉ. This tool is designed to make the virtual reality experience go beyond a simple image and to convey scientific information and theories in the same way an article or a monograph does. Finally, this article offers preliminary feedback on the use of our solutions with three target audiences: the researchers from our team, the broader theatre expert community and the general public.[ES] El proyecto VESPACE tiene como objetivo revivir una velada de teatro en la Foire Saint-Germain de París en el siglo XVIII, recreando espacios, atmósferas y entretenimiento teatral en realidad virtual. Las sedes de esta feria han desaparecido sin dejar ningún rastro arqueológico, por lo que su reconstrucción digital requiere el uso de muy diversas fuentes, entre las que se encuentran expertos historiadores, historiadores del teatro y la literatura. En este artículo presentamos cómo hemos utilizado las herramientas de creación de videojuegos que posibilitan el uso de la realidad virtual en tres etapas clave de la investigación en las ciencias humanas y particularmente en historia o arqueología: investigación preliminar, divulgación científica y mediación con el público en general. En particular, detallamos la metodología utilizada para diseñar un modelo tridimensional (3D) que sea adecuado tanto para la investigación como para la visualización mediante realidad virtual, que cumpla con los estándares del trabajo científico en cuanto a precisión y exactitud, y los requisitos de una visualización en tiempo real. Este modelo se convierte en un entorno en el que los expertos pueden sumergirse dentro de sus campos de investigación y especialización, y así extraer conocimiento reforzando el modelo creado –a través de comentarios, serendipia y nuevas perspectivas– al tiempo que posibilita un flujo de trabajo multidisciplinar. También presentamos nuestra herramienta de anotación y consulta de fuentes, relaciones e hipótesis en inmersión, denominada PROUVÉ. Esta herramienta está diseñada para hacer que la experiencia de la realidad virtual vaya más allá de una simple imagen y que transmita información científica y teorías de la misma manera que lo hace un artículo o una monografía.     Les fortifications occidentales de Porsuk, restitution et modélisation des états les plus anciens

    The aim of this paper is to propose a reconstruction of the evolution and of the appearance of the Porsuk fortifications on the western part of the site. The so-called ‘Hittite’ period, which has been chosen for this study, corresponds to the earliest phases of the site – Porsuk VI and V – with two successive destruction layers and three stages of construction – VI, Vb and Va. Considering the highly speculative interpretation of the latest status of phase V, its remains being seriously disturbed by the Iron Age reoccupation, it has been decided to limit our study to Phase VI and to Phase V before its first destruction. Reconstruction hypothesis given in this contribution have been conceived with the help of 3D computer program based on the archaeologists’ observations and a detailed documentation of the remains

    National audienceLa restitution historique de bâtiments disparus nécessite de convoquer de nombreuses sources de formes différentes, mais aucune trace physique de l'élément à restituer. Afin de pallier cette difficulté, cet article entend proposer le recours à l'immersion virtuelle d'experts dans l'espace restitué. Cette immersion permet de susciter des commentaires conscients ou inconscients, de l'ordre du sensible, des postures corporelles, qui sont autant de sources supplémentaires permettant de guider ou de renseigner un processus de restitution historique. Nous prenons pour exemple les théâtres de la Foire Saint-Germain à Paris au XVIII e siècle-pour lesquelles une importante documentation historique existe, mais aucun vestige archéologique-dans le but de proposer une première ébauche de méthodologie intégrant la sensibilité d'experts pour une rétro-architecture de ces espaces

    Opioid-Induced Constipation and Bowel Dysfunction:A Clinical Guideline

    OBJECTIVE:  To formulate timely evidence-based guidelines for the management of opioid-induced bowel dysfunction. SETTING:  Constipation is a major untoward effect of opioids. Increasing prescription of opioids has correlated to increased incidence of opioid-induced constipation. However, the inhibitory effects of opioids are not confined to the colon, but also affect higher segments of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to the coining of the term "opioid-induced bowel dysfunction." METHODS:  A literature search was conducted using Medline, EMBASE, and EMBASE Classic, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Predefined search terms and inclusion/exclusion criteria were used to identify and categorize relevant papers. A series of statements were formulated and justified by a comment, then labeled with the degree of agreement and their level of evidence as judged by the Strength of Recommendation Taxonomy (SORT) system. RESULTS:  From a list of 10,832 potentially relevant studies, 33 citations were identified for review. Screening the reference lists of the pertinent papers identified additional publications. Current definitions, prevalence, and mechanism of opioid-induced bowel dysfunction were reviewed, and a treatment algorithm and statements regarding patient management were developed to provide guidance on clinical best practice in the management of patients with opioid-induced constipation and opioid-induced bowel dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS:  In recent years, more insight has been gained in the pathophysiology of this "entity"; new treatment approaches have been developed, but guidelines on clinical best practice are still lacking. Current knowledge is insufficient regarding management of the opioid side effects on the upper gastrointestinal tract, but recommendations can be derived from what we know at present

    Short-Term cost impact of compliance with clinical practice guidelines for initial sarcoma treatment

    Background: The impact of compliance to clinical practice guidelines (CPG) on outcomes and/or costs of care has not been completely clarified.Objective: To estimate relationships between medical expenditures and compliance to CPG for initial sarcoma treatment.Research design: Selected cohorts of patients diagnosed with sarcoma in 2005 and 2006, and treated at the University hospital and/or the cancer centre of the Rhône-Alpes region, France (n=90). Main outcome measurements were: patient characteristics, compliance with CPG, health outcomes, and costs. Data were mainly extracted from patient records. The logarithm of treatment costs was modelled using linear and Tobit regressions.Results: Rates of compliance with CPG were 86%, 66%, 88%, 89%, and 95% for initial diagnosis, primary surgical excision, wide surgical excision, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, respectively. Total average costs reached €24,439, with €1,784, €11,225, €10,360, and €1,016 for diagnosis, surgery (primary and wide surgical excisions), chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, respectively. Compliance of diagnosis with CPG decreased the cost of diagnosis, whereas compliance of primary surgical excision increased the cost of chemotherapy. Compliance of chemotherapy with CPG decreased the cost of radiotherapy.Conclusion: Since chemotherapy is one of the major cost drivers, these results support that compliance with guidelines increases medical care expenditures in short term.Oncology; Sarcoma; Cost; Clinical guidelines; Efficacy; Medical Practices; Government Policy; Regulation; Public Health

    La Cappadoce méridionale de la Préhistoire à l'époque byzantine

    Il y a environ 25 ans, Olivier Pelon organisait à l’Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes d’Istanbul un colloque destiné à faire l’état des recherches sur la Cappadoce méridionale jusqu’à la fin de l’époque romaine. Un quart de siècle après ce premier colloque, il était intéressant de faire un nouveau point sur l’avancée des recherches dans cette Cappadoce méridionale, de la préhistoire à la période byzantine. Ce nouveau colloque, placé cette fois encore sous l’égide de l’Institut Français d’Études Anatoliennes et intégré à la série des Rencontres d’archéologie de l’IFEA réunit vingt-trois communications. Si les périodes néolithique et chalcolithique ont été particulièrement bien représentées, ce qui témoigne bien de l’importance de cette phase de la préhistoire cappadocienne, liée aux gisements d’obsidienne des Melendiz Dağları, on soulignera en revanche l’absence presque totale du Bronze Ancien. Cette phase est en effet peu représentée dans l’archéologie locale. La même remarque peut s’appliquer au Bronze Moyen. La fin du Bronze Moyen, fort heureusement, est représentée à Porsuk, de même que le Bronze Récent qui bénéficie, depuis peu, tout comme l’Âge du Fer, du démarrage fructueux des fouilles de Kınık Höyük. Enfin, l’Antiquité tardive et Byzance ont pu être représentées, principalement autour de Tyane, ce qui n’avait pas pu être le cas lors du premier colloque. En octobre 2012, quelques semaines avant la tenue de la Rencontre, on apprenait malheureusement le décès brutal et inattendu d’Olivier Pelon, ancien directeur de la mission de Porsuk (jusqu’en 2002) et organisateur de ce premier colloque cappadocien. C’est bien en hommage à sa mémoire que notre Rencontre cappadocienne de 2012 et sa publication ont été naturellement dédiées

    Development and validation of a questionnaire assessing volitional competencies to enhance the performance of physical activities in chronic low back pain patients

    BACKGROUND: Motivation has long been emphasized as the most important determinant of action. However, there is a substantial gap between people's goals and their attainment. Patients may be motivated and yet unable to take action if their volitional competencies are insufficient. One of the important tasks of volition is goal-maintenance. Research has stressed the importance of a volitional tool, the implementation intentions. Implementation intentions indicate where, when, and how the action leading to the goal will be performed. Forming implementation intentions favours the execution of goal-directed efforts, and reinforces the relationship between intentions and behaviours. Results from various studies clearly suggest that volitional competencies and implementation intentions could play a role in low back pain (LBP) patients. However, there is at present no questionnaire allowing assessing the capacity of implementation intentions of physical activities in LBP patients. METHODS/DESIGN: This study will develop such a questionnaire, using a 3-step approach. A first qualitative step to build categories and generate items; 30 patients suffering chronic LBP will be invited to participate in semi-structured interviews; verbatim and derived items will then be submitted to a panel of experts, using a Delphi method; a second quantitative step to examine the properties of items, and determine the factorial structure of the questionnaire; 100 patients suffering chronic LBP will be recruited to respond to this phase; and third, preliminary psychometric analyses (item-scale correlations, construct validity, reliability); 180 chronic LBP patients will be recruited for this phase of the study. The relationships between implementation intentions and variables affecting physical activity on chronic LBP patients, i.e. pain, physical capacities, fear-avoidance beliefs, kinesiophobia, work status, and level of physical activity will be considered. DISCUSSION: Developing a questionnaire to assess implementation intentions would allow investigating the role of these intentions in the transition from acute to chronic LBP. The results of this study should contribute to the understanding of the psychological processes at stake in the development of chronic LBP, and in particular to the identification of factors eventually favouring patients' participation in and adherence to active physical treatments
