Asteroseismological study of massive ZZ Ceti stars with fully evolutionary models
We present the first asteroseismological study for 42 massive ZZ Ceti stars
based on a large set of fully evolutionary carbonoxygen core DA white dwarf
models characterized by a detailed and consistent chemical inner profile for
the core and the envelope. Our sample comprise all the ZZ Ceti stars with
spectroscopic stellar masses between 0.72 and known to date.
The asteroseismological analysis of a set of 42 stars gives the possibility to
study the ensemble properties of the massive pulsating white dwarf stars with
carbonoxygen cores, in particular the thickness of the hydrogen envelope and
the stellar mass. A significant fraction of stars in our sample have stellar
mass high enough as to crystallize at the effective temperatures of the ZZ Ceti
instability strip, which enables us to study the effects of crystallization on
the pulsation properties of these stars. Our results show that the phase
diagram presented in Horowitz et al. (2010) seems to be a good representation
of the crystallization process inside white dwarf stars, in agreement with the

Dissipation and memory effects in pure glue deconfinement
We investigate the effects of dissipation in the deconfining transition for a
pure SU(2) gauge theory. Using an effective model for the order parameter, we
study its Langevin evolution numerically, and compare results from local
additive noise dynamics to those obtained considering an exponential non-local

Modelling of an IR scintillation counter
A systematic study of the excitation and de-excitation mechanisms in ternary gas mixtures Ar+CO2+N2 is presented regarding the possibility of developing a proportional scintillation counter based on the detection of the infrared molecular emissions associated with the lowest vibrational states of molecules. The use of visible or near-infrared photons ([lambda]<1 [mu]m) for applications like imaging and quality control of microstructure detectors has been reported. The sdA problem - II. Photometric and Spectroscopic Follow-up
Subdwarf A star (sdA) is a spectral classification given to objects showing
H-rich spectra and sub-main sequence surface gravities, but effective
temperature lower than the zero-age horizontal branch. Their evolutionary
origin is an enigma. In this work, we discuss the results of follow-up
observations of selected sdAs. We obtained time resolved spectroscopy for 24
objects, and time-series photometry for another 19 objects. For two targets, we
report both spectroscopy and photometry observations. We confirm seven objects
to be new extremely-low mass white dwarfs (ELMs), one of which is a known

Rotterdam Prostate Cancer Risk Calculator: Development and Usability Testing of the Mobile Phone App
BACKGROUND:
The use of prostate cancer screening tools that take into account relevant prebiopsy information (ie, risk calculators) is recommended as a way of determining the risk of cancer and the subsequent need for a prostate biopsy. This has the potential to limit prostate cancer overdiagnosis and subsequent overtreatment. mHealth apps are gaining traction in urological practice and are used by both practitioners and patients for a variety of purposes.
OBJECTIVE:
The impetus of the study was to design, develop, and assess a smartphone app for prostate cancer screening, based on the Rotterdam Prostate Cancer Risk Calculator (RPCRC).
METHODS:
The results of the Rotterdam arm of the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC) study were used to elaborate several algorithms that allowed the risk of prostate cancer to be estimated. A step-by-step workflow was established to ensure that depending on the available clinical information the most complete risk model of the RPCRC was used. The user interface was designed and then the app was developed as a native app for iOS. The usability of the app was assessed using the Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire (PSSUQ) developed by IBM, in a group of 92 participants comprising urologists, general practitioners, and medical students.
RESULTS:
A total of 11 questions were built into the app, and, depending on the answers, one of the different algorithms of the RPCRC could be used to predict the risk of prostate cancer and of clinically significant prostate cancer (Gleason score ≥7 and clinical stage >T2b). The system usefulness, information quality, and interface quality scores were high-92% (27.7/30), 87% (26.2/30), and 89% (13.4/15), respectively. No usability problems were identified.
CONCLUSIONS:
The RPCRC app is helpful in predicting the risk of prostate cancer and, even more importantly, clinically significant prostate cancer. Its algorithms have been externally validated before and the usability score shows the app's interface is well designed. Further usability testing is required in different populations to verify these results and ensure that it is easy to use, to warrant a broad appeal, and to provide better patient care.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Mediterranean olive orchards under climate change: A review of future impacts and adaptation strategies
The olive tree (Olea europaea L.) is an ancient traditional crop in the Mediterranean Basin. In the Mediterranean region, traditional olive orchards are distinguishable by their prevailing climatic conditions. Olive trees are indeed considered one of the most suitable and best-adapted species to the Mediterranean-type climate. However, new challenges are predicted to arise from climate change, threatening this traditional crop. The Mediterranean Basin is considered a climate change “hotspot,” as future projections hint at considerable warming and drying trends. Changes in olive tree suitability have already been reported over the last few decades. In this context, climate change may become particularly challenging for olive growers. The growing evidence for significant climate change in the upcoming decades urges adaptation measures to be taken. To effectively cope with the projected changes, both short and long-term adaptation strategies must be timely planned by the sector stakeholders and decision-makers to adapt for a warmer and dryer future. The current manuscript is devoted to illustrating the main impacts of climate change on olive tree cultivation in the Mediterranean Basin, by reviewing the most recent studies on this subject. Additionally, an analysis of possible adaptation strategies against the potentially negative impacts of climate change was also performed
EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF A PARAFFIN BASED HYBRID ROCKET
Hybrid rockets are known to be simpler, safer, environmentally friend, and, more importantly, cheaper than most of the technologies for propulsion devices used today. Hybrid rockets can be applied as the propulsion system in satellites launch vehicles, micro-satellites and tactical missiles. This paper deals with combustion of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) and paraffin as the solid fuels burning with gaseous oxygen (GOX) as well as N O as the oxidizer in lab scale hybrid rocket motors. A test 2 stand was built to carry out the experiments. The main objectives were to investigate the ignition of the solid fuels, burning performance and regression rates for different operating conditions. With paraffin-based fuel the hybrid motor had the regression rate enhanced two to three folds compared to the UHMWPE, as reported in the literature. The overall performance of the motor, with paraffin as the fuel, is comparable to other technologies. Paraffin-based hybrid rockets can, then, be a safer and cheaper alternative to satellite launch vehicles for the Brazilian space program
