    Get PDF
The first permanent foundation of the town of San Salvador dates to 1528. After the foundation, many indigenous allies and their families stayed to settle in and near the town. The town of San Salvador is known today as the archaeological site of Ciudad Vieja. Archaeological investigations have yielded a wealth of data relevant to this urban center as a socially produced and socially constructed space. The urban layout with its main square, streets, and structures of different kinds define the spatial core of the zone of social reproduction. The sociospatial distribution of the residences resulted in a hierarchical pattern with Spanish dwellings within the urban grid and indigenous houses on the periphery of the town. The first villa of San Salvador had the physical shape and appearance of a small Spanish town with Hispanic spatial layout and architecture but a small Spanish population and a very large indigenous population. Detailed studies of the landscape and the architectural remains of the town form the basis of more focused analysis, as in this case, a material dialectic analysis of the cross and the sword through a comparison of civic architecture and religious architecture of Ciudad Vieja.

    Get PDF

Tests of a multichannel photometer based on silicon diode detectors

    Get PDF
A breadboard photometer was constructed that demonstrates a precision of 2 times 10 to the 4th power in the laboratory and scintillation-limited performance when used with an 0.5 m aperture telescope. Because the detectors and preamps are not cooled, only stars with m sub v approx. less than 4 are bright enough to allow the photometer to attain a precision of 1 times 10 to the 3rd power for three minute observations with an 0.5 m aperature telescope. Cooling the telescope should allow much fainter stars to be observed. Increasing the aperture of the telescope will allow higher precision and the observation of fainter stars

Synthesis of the Elements in Stars

Man inhabits a universe composed of a great variety of elements and their isotopes. In Table I,1 a count of the stable and radioactive elements and isotopes is listed. Ninety elements are found terrestrially and one more, technetium, is found in stars; only promethium has not been found in nature

Pierre Bourdieu is one of the contemporary theorists most studied in different fields of social sciences social action because its principles are invited to overcome the contradictions or the classic dualisms of traditional sociology (objectivism / subjectivism, structure / agency, individual / society, matter / idea micro / macro, qualitative / quantitative) and that has been identified with overcoming determinism and sustancialismos, building more relational and procedural approaches. Its main theoretical influences come from Marxism, French structuralism, the philosophies of Martin Heidegger, Edmund Husserl, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Raymond Aron and Ludwig Wittgenstein; including French epistemological tradition, which emphasizes non-positivism and anti-evolutionism.

NASA Sea Ice Validation Program for the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program Special Sensor Microwave Imager

    Get PDF
The history of the program is described along with the SSM/I sensor, including its calibration and geolocation correction procedures used by NASA, SSM/I data flow, and the NASA program to distribute polar gridded SSM/I radiances and sea ice concentrations (SIC) on CD-ROMs. Following a discussion of the NASA algorithm used to convert SSM/I radiances to SICs, results of 95 SSM/I-MSS Landsat IC comparisons for regions in both the Arctic and the Antarctic are presented. The Landsat comparisons show that the overall algorithm accuracy under winter conditions is 7 pct. on average with 4 pct. negative bias. Next, high resolution active and passive microwave image mosaics from coordinated NASA and Navy aircraft underflights over regions of the Beaufort and Chukchi seas in March 1988 were used to show that the algorithm multiyear IC accuracy is 11 pct. on average with a positive bias of 12 pct. Ice edge crossings of the Bering Sea by the NASA DC-8 aircraft were used to show that the SSM/I 15 pct. ice concentration contour corresponds best to the location of the initial bands at the ice edge. Finally, a summary of results and recommendations for improving the SIC retrievals from spaceborne radiometers are provided

Highly Plasma Etch-Resistant Photoresist Composition Containing a Photosensitive Polymeric Titania Precursor

    Get PDF
A composition is derived from an addition polymerizable organotitanium polymer which upon exposure to an oxygen plasma or baking in air, is converted to titanium dioxide (titania) or is converted to a mixed, titanium-containing metal oxide. The metal oxide formed in situ imparts etch- resistant action to a patterned photoresist layer. The composition may also be directly deposited and patterned into permanent metal oxide device features by a photolithographic process

Integration of highly probabilistic sources into optical quantum architectures: perpetual quantum computation

In this paper we introduce a design for an optical topological cluster state computer constructed exclusively from a single quantum component. Unlike previous efforts we eliminate the need for on demand, high fidelity photon sources and detectors and replace them with the same device utilised to create photon/photon entanglement. This introduces highly probabilistic elements into the optical architecture while maintaining complete specificity of the structure and operation for a large scale computer. Photons in this system are continually recycled back into the preparation network, allowing for a arbitrarily deep 3D cluster to be prepared using a comparatively small number of photonic qubits and consequently the elimination of high frequency, deterministic photon sources.Comment: 19 pages, 13 Figs (2 Appendices with additional Figs.).
