Such a creation is dependent on a university “open” to all walks of life and all levels of knowledge and to an adaptation of trade-unions to a context of de-industrialization. A new type of training is proposed, the so called “training-and-action”. It’s about an “active culture”, training individuals, but meant to fall within a collective framework. In spite of various threats such as immobilism, rule of thumb and a possible marginalization of management and labour, the Workers’ Institutes are filling an original space and have their legitimacy recognized

Establishment of a wear control system for drilling and tapping when machining parts

The topic of this thesis is divided in two main parts. The first is about the “tool/workpiece pair” method and the second is related to wear monitoring. The entire project will be about drilling and tapping operations done in SNECMA Vernon. In fact, the part is very expensive so they have to be closely controlled to avoid a maximum scrap pieces. Two software will be used to control it. Firstly, the “tool/workpiece pair” will be done through AMC3 (software developed at the ENSAM). And secondly the wear monitoring will be ensured by the software CTM Visu (developed by ARTIS). My task will be to learn how to use those software and then to implement them in the company.

Service Learning for Community Engagement: An Interdisciplinary Approach for Engineering Education

Abstract Interdisciplinary teams of undergraduate students and faculty from different disciplines including civil, electrical, mechanical and chemical engineering as well as biology, business administration, chemistry, and social sciences has been working in communities in Puerto Rico since 2003 as part of an effort from the University of Puerto Rico at MayagĂŒez to engage into those communities with an innovative educational approach in service learning. The application of service learning in real world scenarios is guided through the use of the participative action research methodology that has been taught by the University Institute for Community Development. This methodology has been complemented with the engineering skills taught in undergraduate courses. Interdisciplinary teams are created to evaluate infrastructure as well as social and environmental conditions for the development and implementation of practical and feasible solutions to the needs of low-income citizens. The engineering students were also motivated in community service through the Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program. This paper describes the academic as well as the administrative structure developed by the faculty and students from the University Institute for Community Development and EPICS to accomplish interdisciplinary engineering education at the University of Puerto Rico at MayagĂŒez (UPRM). In addition, several types of projects are described to illustrate the extend of the approach and the challenges that interdisciplinary participants, both faculty and students, faced to achieve service teaching and learning

Efficacy of Diosmectite (Smecta)Âź in the Treatment of Acute Watery Diarrhoea in Adults: A Multicentre, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel Group Study

Background. Although diosmectite has demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of acute watery diarrhoea in children, its efficacy in adults still needs to be assessed. The objective of this study was therefore to assess the efficacy of diosmectite on the time to recovery in adults with acute diarrhoea. Methods. A total of 346 adults with at least three watery stools per day over a period of less than 48 hours were prospectively randomized to diosmectite (6 g tid) or placebo during four days. The primary endpoint was time to diarrhoea recovery. Results. In the intention-to-treat population, median time to recovery was 53.8 hours (range [3.7–167.3]) with diosmectite (n = 166) versus 69.0 hours [2.2–165.2] with placebo, (n = 163; P = .029), which corresponds to a difference of 15.2 hours. Diosmectite was well tolerated. Conclusion. Diosmectite at 6 g tid was well tolerated and reduced the time to recovery of acute watery diarrhoea episode in a clinically relevant manner
