Quantum Global Strings and Their Correlation Functions
A full quantum description of global vortex strings is presented in the
framework of a pure Higgs system with a broken global U(1) symmetry in 3+1D. An
explicit expression for the string creation operator is obtained, both in terms
of the Higgs field and in the dual formulation where a Kalb-Ramond
antisymmetric tensor gauge field is employed as the basic field. The quantum
string correlation function is evaluated and from this, the string energy
density is obtained. Potential application in cosmology (cosmic strings) and
condensed matter (vortices in superfluids) are discussed.Comment: 14 pages, latex, no figure
Multibranch Bogoliubov-Bloch spectrum of a cigar shaped Bose condensate in an optical lattice
We study properties of excited states of an array of weakly coupled
quasi-two-dimensional Bose condensates by using the hydrodynamic theory. The
spectrum of the axial excited states strongly depends on the coupling among the
various discrete radial modes in a given symmetry. By including mode-coupling
within a given symmetry, the complete excitation spectrum of axial
quasiparticles with various discrete radial nodes are presented. A single
parameter which determines the strength of the mode coupling is identified. The
excitation spectrum in the zero angular momentum sector can be observed by
using the Bragg scattering experiments.Comment: to apper in Phys. Rev.
Multi-band spectroscopy of inhomogeneous Mott-insulator states of ultracold bosons
In this work, we use inelastic scattering of light to study the response of
inhomogeneous Mott-insulator gases to external excitations. The experimental
setup and procedure to probe the atomic Mott states are presented in detail. We
discuss the link between the energy absorbed by the gases and accessible
experimental parameters as well as the linearity of the response to the
scattering of light. We investigate the excitations of the system in multiple
energy bands and a band-mapping technique allows us to identify band and
momentum of the excited atoms. In addition the momentum distribution in the
Mott states which is spread over the entire first Brillouin zone enables us to
reconstruct the dispersion relation in the high energy bands using a single
Bragg excitation with a fixed momentum transfer.Comment: 19 pages, 7 figure
MOND and Cosmology
I review various ideas on MOND cosmology and structure formation beginning
with non-relativistic models in analogy with Newtonian cosmology. I discuss
relativistic MOND cosmology in the context of Bekenstein's theory and propose
an alternative biscalar effective theory of MOND in which the acceleration
parameter is identified with the cosmic time derivative of a matter coupling
scalar field. Cosmic CDM appears in this theory as scalar field oscillations of
the auxiliary "coupling strength" field.Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings of IAP05 in

On the consistency of the constraint algebra in spin network quantum gravity
We point out several features of the quantum Hamiltonian constraints recently
introduced by Thiemann for Euclidean gravity. In particular we discuss the
issue of the constraint algebra and of the quantum realization of the object
, which is classically the Poisson Bracket of two Hamiltonians.Comment: 13 pages, RevTex, 2 figures include
Collective excitations of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a 1D optical lattice
We study low-lying collective modes of a horizontally elongated 87Rb
condensate produced in a 3D magnetic harmonic trap with the addition of a 1D
periodic potential which is provided by a laser standing-wave along the
horizontal axis. While the transverse breathing mode results unperturbed,
quadrupole and dipole oscillations along the optical lattice are strongly
modified. Precise measurements of the collective mode frequencies at different
height of the optical barriers provide a stringent test of the theoretical
model recently introduced [M.Kraemer et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 180404 (2002)].Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Gravitational Lensing & Stellar Dynamics
Strong gravitational lensing and stellar dynamics provide two complementary
and orthogonal constraints on the density profiles of galaxies. Based on
spherically symmetric, scale-free, mass models, it is shown that the
combination of both techniques is powerful in breaking the mass-sheet and
mass-anisotropy degeneracies. Second, observational results are presented from
the Lenses Structure & Dynamics (LSD) Survey and the Sloan Lens ACS (SLACS)
Survey collaborations to illustrate this new methodology in constraining the
dark and stellar density profiles, and mass structure, of early-type galaxies
to redshifts of unity.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; Invited contribution in the Proceedings of XXIst
