On uniformization of Burnside's curve
Main objects of uniformization of the curve are studied: its
Burnside's parametrization, corresponding Schwarz's equation, and accessory
parameters. As a result we obtain the first examples of solvable Fuchsian
equations on torus and exhibit number-theoretic integer -series for
uniformizing functions, relevant modular forms, and analytic series for
holomorphic Abelian integrals. A conjecture of Whittaker for hyperelliptic
curves and its hypergeometric reducibility are discussed. We also consider the

Nonrelativistic Chern-Simons Vortices on the Torus
A classification of all periodic self-dual static vortex solutions of the
Jackiw-Pi model is given. Physically acceptable solutions of the Liouville
equation are related to a class of functions which we term
Omega-quasi-elliptic. This class includes, in particular, the elliptic
functions and also contains a function previously investigated by Olesen. Some
examples of solutions are studied numerically and we point out a peculiar
phenomenon of lost vortex charge in the limit where the period lengths tend to

Strange Decays of Nonstrange Baryons
The strong decays of excited nonstrange baryons into the final states Lambda
K, Sigma K, and for the first time into Lambda(1405) K, Lambda(1520) K,
Sigma(1385) K, Lambda K*, and Sigma K*, are examined in a relativized quark
pair creation model. The wave functions and parameters of the model are fixed
by previous calculations of N pi and N pi pi, etc., decays. Our results show
that it should be possible to discover several new negative parity excited
baryons and confirm the discovery of several others by analyzing these final
states in kaon production experiments. We also establish clear predictions for
the relative strengths of certain states to decay to Lambda(1405) K and
Lambda(1520) K, which can be tested to determine if a three-quark model of the
Lambda(1405) K is valid. Our results compare favorably with the results of
partial wave analyses of the limited existing data for the Lambda K and Sigma K
channels. We do not find large Sigma K decay amplitudes for a substantial group
of predicted and weakly established negative-parity states, in contrast to the
only previous work to consider decays of these states into the strange final

The falling chain of Hopkins, Tait, Steele and Cayley
A uniform, flexible and frictionless chain falling link by link from a heap
by the edge of a table falls with an acceleration if the motion is
nonconservative, but if the motion is conservative, being the
acceleration due to gravity. Unable to construct such a falling chain, we use
instead higher-dimensional versions of it. A home camcorder is used to measure
the fall of a three-dimensional version called an -slider. After
frictional effects are corrected for, its vertical falling acceleration is
found to be . This result agrees with the theoretical

Justice at Sea: Fishersâ politics and marine conservation in coastal Odisha, India
This is a paper about the politics of fishing rights in and around the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary in coastal Odisha, in eastern India. Claims to the resources of this sanctuary are politicised through the creation of a particularly damaging narrative by influential Odiya environmental actors about Bengalis, as illegal immigrants who have hurt the ecosystem through their fishing practices. Anchored within a theoretical framework of justice as recognition, the paper considers the making of a regional Odiya environmentalism that is, potentially, deeply exclusionary. It details how an argument about âillegal Bengalisâ depriving âindigenous Odiyasâ of their legitimate âtraditional fishing rightsâ derives from particular notions of indigeneity and territory. But the paper also shows that such environmentalism is tenuous, and fits uneasily with the everyday social landscape of fishing in coastal Odisha. It concludes that a wider class conflict between small fishers and the state over a sanctuary sets the context in which questions about legitimate resource rights are raised, sometimes with important effects, like when out at sea
Acceleration of Solar Wind Ions by Nearby Interplanetary Shocks: Comparison of Monte Carlo Simulations with Ulysses Observations
The most stringent test of theoretical models of the first-order Fermi
mechanism at collisionless astrophysical shocks is a comparison of the
theoretical predictions with observational data on particle populations. Such
comparisons have yielded good agreement between observations at the
quasi-parallel portion of the Earth's bow shock and three theoretical
approaches, including Monte Carlo kinetic simulations. This paper extends such
model testing to the realm of oblique interplanetary shocks: here observations
of proton and alpha particle distributions made by the SWICS ion mass
spectrometer on Ulysses at nearby interplanetary shocks are compared with test
particle Monte Carlo simulation predictions of accelerated populations. The
plasma parameters used in the simulation are obtained from measurements of
solar wind particles and the magnetic field upstream of individual shocks. Good
agreement between downstream spectral measurements and the simulation
predictions are obtained for two shocks by allowing the the ratio of the
mean-free scattering length to the ionic gyroradius, to vary in an optimization
of the fit to the data. Generally small values of this ratio are obtained,
corresponding to the case of strong scattering. The acceleration process

Implementing integrated measurements of essential biodiversity variables at a national scale
Funding: the Strategic Science Investment Funding for Crown Research Institutes from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.1. There is a global need for observation systems that deliver regular, timely data on state and trends in biodiversity, but few have been implemented, and fewer still at national scales. We describe the implementation of measurement of Essential Biodiversity Variables (EBVs) on an 8 km Ă 8 km grid throughout New Zealand, with multiple components of biodiversity (vegetation, birds, and some introduced mammals) measured simultaneously at each sample point. 2. Between 2011 and 2017, all public land was sampled nationally (ca. 1,350 points) and some private land (ca. 500 points). Synthetic appraisals of the state of New Zealand's biodiversity, not possible previously, can be derived from the first measurement of species distribution, population abundance, and taxonomic diversity EBVs. 3. Native bird counts (all species combined) were about 2.5 times greater per sample point in natural forests and shrublands than in nonâwoody ecosystems, and native bird counts exceeded those of nonânative birds across all natural forests and shrublands. 4. Nonânative plants, birds, and mammals are invasive throughout, but highârainfall forested regions are least invaded, and historically deforested rain shadow regions are most invaded. 5. National reporting of terrestrial biodiversity across New Zealand's public land is established and becoming normalised, in the same manner as national and international reporting of human health and education statistics. The challenge is extending coverage across all private land. Repeated measurements of these EBVs, which began in 2017, will allow defensible estimates of biodiversity trends.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
A fourâcomponent classification of uncertainties in biological invasions: implications for management
Although uncertainty is an integral part of any science, it raises doubts in public perception about scientific evidence, is exploited by denialists, and therefore potentially hinders the implementation of management actions. As a relatively young field of study, invasion science contains many uncertainties. This may explain why, despite international policies aimed at mitigating biological invasions, the implementation of national- and regional-scale measures to prevent or control alien species has done little to slow the increase in extent of invasions and the magnitude of impacts. Uncertainty is therefore a critical aspect of invasion science that should be addressed to enable the field to progress further. To improve how uncertainties in invasion science are captured and characterized, we propose a framework, which is also applicable to other applied research fields such as climate and conservation science, divided into four components: the need (1) to clearly circumscribe the phenomenon, (2) to measure and provide evidence for the phenomenon (i.e., confirmation), (3) to understand the mechanisms that cause the phenomenon, and (4) to understand the mechanisms through which the phenomenon results in consequences. We link these issues to three major types of uncertainty: linguistic, psychological, and epistemic. The application of this framework shows that the four components tend to be characterized by different types of uncertainty in invasion science.We explain how these uncertainties can be detrimental to the implementation of management measures and propose ways to reduce them. Since biological invasions are increasingly tightly embedded in complex socio-ecological systems, many problems associated with these uncertainties have convoluted solutions. They demand the consensus of many stakeholders to define and frame the dimensions of the phenomenon, and to decide on appropriate actions. While many of the uncertainties cannot be eliminated completely, we believe that using this framework to explicitly identify and communicate them will help to improve collaboration between researchers and managers, increase scientific, political, and public support for invasion research, and provide a stronger foundation for sustainable management strategies
