    CLEANING AND PREVENTION OF INORGANIC DEPOSITS IN PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS USING PULSATING CURRENT

    Fouling of heat exchangers is a major problem in many industrial processes. The higher temperature of the heat exchange surface compared with the liquid containing precipitable compounds causes the formation of inorganic deposits. Removing the deposits on plate heat exchangers is most often carried out by high-pressure cleaning. This is a laborious task and often increases the corrosion rate of the plates by increasing the roughness of the cleaned surface. This study presents an electrochemical method to clean heat exchange surfaces fouled by deposits and to prevent formation of deposits. This method utilizes pulsating current to polarize heat exchange surfaces with periodic anodic and cathodic DC current. The shape of the pulse and the current density are adjusted to maximize the deposit removal rate, thus minimizing plate corrosion. The optimal pulsating current depends on the material of the heat exchange surface, as well as the composition of the deposits and the solution. For cleaning, the current densities and the frequency of the current pulse are typically higher than those used for preventing deposition. Pulsating current can effectively remove deposits with low solubility, such as TiO2 on titanium heat exchange plates or dense gypsum deposits on stainless steel plates. For cleaning titanium, the cathodic pulse and formation of hydrogen is more essential than in the cleaning of stainless steels. However, the risk of corrosion limits the use of high current densities. Experiments have until now been carried out mainly in the laboratory, though industrial pilot cleaning equipment has also been constructed.     High morbid-mortability and reduced level of osteoporosis diagnosis among elderly people who had hip fractures in São Paulo City

    OBJECTIVE: To know the morbid-mortality following an osteoporotic hip fracture in elderly patients living in São Paulo. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study evaluated prospectively all patient over 60 years admitted in 2 school-hospitals in the city of São Paulo in a following 6-month period due to a osteoporotic proximal femur fracture. All of them filled up the Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ) and had their chart reviewed. After 6 months they were re-interviewed. Linear regression analysis was utilized to determine the factors related to functional ability. RESULTS: 56 patients were included (mean age 80.7 ± 7.9 years old, 80.4% females). After the 6-month follow up the mortality rate was 23.2%. Only 30% of the patients returned to their previous activities, and 11.6% became totally dependent. Factors related to worse functional ability after fracture were HAQ before fracture, institutionalization after fracture and age (r² 0.482). The diagnosis of osteoporosis was informed only by 13.9% of them, and just 11.6% received any treatment for that. CONCLUSION: Our results showed the great impact of these fractures on mortality and in the functional ability of these patients. Nevertheless, many of our physicians do not inform the patients about the diagnosis of osteoporosis and, consequently, the treatment of this condition is jeopardized.As fraturas osteoporóticas de fêmur proximal trazem graves conseqüências quanto à morbimortalidade e à qualidade de vida, mas desconhece-se este impacto no Brasil. OBJETIVO: Conhecer a morbimortalidade decorrente deste tipo de fraturas em idosos na cidade de São Paulo. MÉTODOS: Foram incluídos todos os pacientes com mais de 60 anos internados por fraturas de fêmur proximal durante seis meses, em dois hospitais de São Paulo. Os pacientes preencheram o questionário de capacidade funcional (HAQ), tiveram seu prontuário examinado e foram reavaliados após seis meses. Utilizou-se a análise de regressão linear para determinar os fatores relacionados à capacidade funcional. RESULTADOS: Cinqüenta e seis pacientes foram incluídos no estudo (80,7 ± 7,9 anos; 80,4% mulheres). A mortalidade em seis meses foi de 23,2%. Apenas 30% retornaram plenamente às suas atividades prévias e 11,6% tornaram-se completamente dependentes. Os fatores que mais bem conseguiram prever pior capacidade funcional após a fratura foram HAQ pré-fratura, institucionalização pós-fratura e idade (r² 0,482). Somente 13,9% receberam o diagnóstico de osteoporose e 11,6% iniciaram algum tratamento. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados do presente estudo demonstram o impacto deste tipo de fraturas sobre a mortalidade e a capacidade funcional.     The use of decision methods in the selection of leaching alternatives

    Traditionally the hydrometallurgical process routes development has been made based on personnel's experiences and preferences. Knowledge about different decisions has turned to tacit knowledge, which is very difficult to communicate to other people. For this reason an attempt has been made to develop a tool that could be used as a selection tool when making decisions between different leaching alternatives. That would help both to collect and to transfer that information for others. This work is a part of a larger study that's aim is to create a unit process selection methodology for low grade ores using technological and economical data. For effective use of a decision support method a description of the decision problem, collection and presentation of data and well constructed logics for retrieving data are needed. The description of the research problem depends on the application. Collection and presentation of the data must be planned together with logics for retrieving data. Several retrieval methods could be used with the same data. In this work Case Based Reasoning has been selected as data retrieving method. The main focus in this work is to establish what kind of method would help in the rough selection between the different leaching processes. The optimization of the process chain would be the next stage of development work but is not discussed here. Different examples how to represent applicability between different leaching processes are discussed.     Atomic layer deposited thin films for corrosion protection

    The suitability of Atomic Layer Deposition for making corrosion protection coatings was examined. Thin films of Al2O3, TiO2, Ta2O5 and Al2O3-TiO2 multilayer were deposited on stainless steel substrates. The films were deposited at 150-400 °C. The corrosion behaviour of the samples was studied by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in 3.5 wt.% NaCl and 0.1 and 1 mol/l HCl solutions. Al2O3 was found to protect the substrate material against corrosion for a limited time in NaCl. TiO2 alone does not give good protection, but when combined with Al2O3 in a multilayer structure better protection is achieved. Ta2O5 films were tested in HCl and were found to protect the base material to some extent
