New issues in attendance demand: the case of the English football league
This paper uses an attendance demand model with panel data on over 4,000 games to examine economic problems of fixture congestion in English Football League schedules. We find that televised midweek Champions League matches involving English Premier League clubs have substantial adverse impacts on lower division Football League gate attendance. This suggests that affected clubs may have a case for compensation from the Premier League for loss of gate revenue from this source. Scheduling of home games close to one another also has an adverse impact on attendance. Reorganisation of fixture schedules and/or redistribution of income would help offset adverse impacts on team revenues from midweek scheduling.
Robust estimates of the impact of broadcasting on match attendance in football
The paper employs data from 2,884 matches, of which 158 were televised, in the second tier of English football (currently known as The Football League Championship). It builds a model of the determinants of attendance that is designed to yield estimates of the proportionate changes in the size of crowds resulting from games being shown on either free-to-air or subscription based channels. The model has two innovatory features. First, it controls for the market size of home and away teams very precisely by including local population measures constructed from the application of GIS software and information on competition from other clubs. Second, it employs the Hausman-Taylor random effects estimator in order to take explicit account of the endogeneity of the television coverage variable and of other variables typically included in earlier studies based on ordinary least squares or fixed effects models of attendance. The Hausman-Taylor estimates of the impact of broadcasting are greater than those reported in such studies. In the case of free-to-air television, the negative impact is estimated as over 20 percent but for subscription television, which carried most of the transmissions, the negative effect was only of the order of 5 percent
Freedom of entry, market size and competitive outcome: evidence from English soccer
The paper tests, in the context of an open sports league, whether greater success is achieved by clubs in markets with larger populations. The relationship is strong but, to a limited extent, mitigated by more clubs establishing in large markets.
Outcome uncertainty and the couch potato audience
Previous studies of attendance demand for professional team sports have failed to yield clear- cut findings on the importance of outcome uncertainty to consumers. But potentially fewer problems should arise in examining the link between outcome uncertainty and demand in the television market for team sports, which in the case of English Premier League football is in fact a more important component in total club revenue. This study models both the choice of which games to show and the size of audience attracted by each game, exploiting data on audience sizes for games between 1993 and 2002. We propose a new measure of match outcome uncertainty and, from our results, both the broadcaster and the audience appear interested in competitive balance.
Specific heat of BaKFeAs, and a new method for identifying the electron contribution: two electron bands with different energy gaps in the superconducting state
We report measurements of the specific heat of
BaKFeAs, an Fe-pnictide superconductor with
= 36.9 K, for which there are suggestions of an unusual electron pairing
mechanism. We use a new method of analysis of the data to derive the parameters
characteristic of the electron contribution. It is based on comparisons of
-model expressions for the electron contribution with the total
measured specific heat, which give the electron contribution directly. It
obviates the need in the conventional analyses for an independent, necessarily
approximate, determination of the lattice contribution, which is subtracted
from the total specific heat to obtain the electron contribution. It eliminates
the uncertainties and errors in the electron contribution that follow from the
approximations in the determination of the lattice contribution. Our values of
the parameters characteristic of the electron contribution differ significantly
from those obtained in conventional analyses of specific-heat data for five
similar hole-doped BaFeAs superconductors, which also differ
significantly among themselves. They show that the electron density of states
is comprised of contributions from two electron bands with
superconducting-state energy gaps that differ by a factor 3.8, with 77
coming from the band with the larger gap. The variation of the specific heat
with magnetic field is consistent with extended -wave pairing, one of the
theoretical predictions. The relation between the densities of states and the
energy gaps in the two bands is not consistent with a theoretical model based
on interband interactions alone. Comparison of the normal-state density of
states with band-structure calculations shows an extraordinarily large
effective mass enhancement, for which there is no precedent in similar

The relationship between betting and lottery play: a high frequency time-series analysis
The substitutability of different gambling products is an important concern for any jurisdiction contemplating deregulation of its gambling sector. We apply a novel daily time-series data set of daily turnover from one of Britain's leading bookmakers to analyse potential substitution between lottery play and bookmaker betting. We find some evidence that bettors do substitute away from horse race, dog race and numbers betting when the effective price of lottery tickets is unusually low, i.e. when there is a rollover or Superdraw. This substitution has a highly specific pattern of timing that varies by sector. Our results further suggest that bettors rationally engage in forward-looking substitution within their betting portfolios.
A piloted simulator investigation of stability and control, display and crew-loading requirements for helicopter instrument approach. Part 1: Technical discussion and results
A ground-simulation experiment was conducted to investigate the influence and interaction of flight-control system, fight-director display, and crew-loading situation on helicopter flying qualities during terminal area operations in instrument conditions. The experiment was conducted on the Flight Simulator for Advanced Aircraft at Ames Research Center. Six levels of control complexity, ranging from angular rate damping to velocity augmented longitudinal and vertical axes, were implemented on a representative helicopter model. The six levels of augmentation were examined with display variations consisting of raw elevation and azimuth data only, and of raw data plus one-, two-, and three-cue flight directors. Crew-loading situations simulated for the control-display combinations were dual-pilot operation (representative auxiliary tasks of navigation, communications, and decision-making). Four pilots performed a total of 150 evaluations of combinations of these parameters for a representative microwave landing system (MLS) approach task
