HMO employment and African-American physicians.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the level and determinants of African-American physicians' employment in health maintenance organizations (HMOs), particularly early in their careers. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 1991 and 1996 Young Physicians Surveys to assess racial differences in the likelihood of HMO employment (n = 3,705). Using multinomial logistic regression, we evaluated four explanations for an observed relationship between African-American physicians and HMO employment: human capital stratification among organizations, race-based affinity between physicians and patients, financial constraints due to debt burden, and different organizational hiring practices. Using binomial logistic regression, we also evaluated differences in the odds of being turned down for a prior practice position, of subsequently leaving the current practice organization and of later having career doubts. RESULTS: Without any controls, African-American physicians were 4.52 times more likely to practice in HMOs than Caucasian physicians. After controlling for human capital stratification, racial concordance and financial constraints, African-American physicians remained 2.48 times more likely to practice in HMOs than Caucasian physicians. In addition, 19.2% of African-American physicians in HMOs reported being turned down for another job, far more than any other racial/ethnic group in the HMO setting and any racial/ethnic group, including African-American physicians in the non-HMO setting (including all other practice locations). Five years later, those same African-American physicians from HMOs also reported significantly more turnover (7.50 times more likely than non-HMO African-American physicians to leave their current practice) and doubt about their careers (2.17 times more likely than non-HMO African-American physicians to express serious career doubts). CONCLUSIONS: African-American physicians were disproportionately hired into HMO settings, impacting their subsequent careers
Rural environmental concern: Effects of position, partisanship and place
The social bases of environmental concern in rural America resemble those for the nation as a whole, but also reflect the influence of place. Some general place characteristics, such as rates of population growth or resource-industry employment, predict responses across a number of environmental issues. Other unique or distinctive aspects of local society and environment matter as well. We extend earlier work on both kinds of place effects, first by analyzing survey data from northeast Oregon. Results emphasize that âenvironmental concernâ has several dimensions. Second, we contextualize the Oregon results using surveys from other regions. Analysis of an integrated dataset (up to 12,000 interviews in 38âU.S. counties) shows effects from respondent characteristics and political views, and from county rates of population growth and resource-based employment. There also are significant place-to-place variations that are not explained by variables in the models. To understand some of these we return to the local scale. In northeast Oregon, residents describe how perceptions of fire danger from unmanaged forest lands shape their response to the word conservation. Their local interpretation contrasts with more general and urban connotations of this term, underlining the importance of place for understanding rural environmental concern

Transportation and shipping costs of ornamental horticulture are 10% of total cost of production in Georgia. With many small to medium sized producers using their own independent transportation system, methods to optimize vehicle operations are desired. Will a transportation alliance reduce shipping costs, increase distribution efficiencies, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions among ornamental plants producers in Georgia? Expanding the phenotypic associations of globular glial tau subtypes
AbstractIntroductionClinicopathologic correlation in non-Alzheimer's tauopathies is variable, despite refinement of pathologic diagnostic criteria. In the present study, the clinical and neuroimaging characteristics of globular glial tauopathy (GGT) were examined to determine whether subtyping according to consensus guidelines improves clinicopathologic correlation.MethodsConfirmed GGT cases (n = 11) were identified from 181 frontotemporal tauopathy cases. Clinical and neuroimaging details were collected, and cases sub-typed according to the consensus criteria for GGT diagnosis. Relationships between clinical syndrome and GGT subtype were investigated.ResultsIn total, 11 patients (seven males, four females, mean age = 67.3 +/â 10.6 years) with GGT were included. Most, but not all, presented with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, but none had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Subtyping of GGT proved to be difficult and did not improve clinicopathologic correlation.DiscussionSub-classification of GGT pathology may be difficult and did not improve clinicopathologic correlation. Integrated ocean, earth, and atmospheric observations for resilience planning in Hampton roads, Virginia
Building flood resilience in coastal communities requires a precise understanding of the temporal and spatial scales of inundation and the ability to detect and predict changes in flooding. In Hampton Roads, the Intergovernmental Pilot Project\u27s Scientific Advisory Committee recommended an integrated network of ocean, earth, and atmospheric data collection from both private and public sector organizations that engage in active scientific monitoring and observing. Since its establishment, the network has grown to include monitoring of water levels, land subsidence, wave measurements, current measurements, and atmospheric conditions. High-resolution land elevation and land cover data sets have also been developed. These products have been incorporated into a number of portals and integrated tools to help support resilience planning. Significant challenges to building the network included establishing consistent data standards across organizations to allow for the integration of the data into multiple, unique products and funding the expansion of the network components. Recommendations to the network development in Hampton Roads include the need to continue to support and expand the publicly available network of sensors; enhance integration between ocean, earth, and atmospheric networks; and improve shallow water bathymetry data used in spatial flooding models
Stark Tuning of Donor Electron Spins in Silicon
We report Stark shift measurements for 121Sb donor electron spins in silicon
using pulsed electron spin resonance. Interdigitated metal gates on top of a
Sb-implanted 28Si epi-layer are used to apply electric fields. Two Stark
effects are resolved: a decrease of the hyperfine coupling between electron and
nuclear spins of the donor and a decrease in electron Zeeman g-factor. The
hyperfine term prevails at X-band magnetic fields of 0.35T, while the g-factor
term is expected to dominate at higher magnetic fields. A significant linear

Kepler Presearch Data Conditioning II - A Bayesian Approach to Systematic Error Correction
With the unprecedented photometric precision of the Kepler Spacecraft,
significant systematic and stochastic errors on transit signal levels are
observable in the Kepler photometric data. These errors, which include
discontinuities, outliers, systematic trends and other instrumental signatures,
obscure astrophysical signals. The Presearch Data Conditioning (PDC) module of
the Kepler data analysis pipeline tries to remove these errors while preserving
planet transits and other astrophysically interesting signals. The completely
new noise and stellar variability regime observed in Kepler data poses a
significant problem to standard cotrending methods such as SYSREM and TFA.
Variable stars are often of particular astrophysical interest so the
preservation of their signals is of significant importance to the astrophysical
community. We present a Bayesian Maximum A Posteriori (MAP) approach where a
subset of highly correlated and quiet stars is used to generate a cotrending
basis vector set which is in turn used to establish a range of "reasonable"
robust fit parameters. These robust fit parameters are then used to generate a
Bayesian Prior and a Bayesian Posterior Probability Distribution Function (PDF)
which when maximized finds the best fit that simultaneously removes systematic
effects while reducing the signal distortion and noise injection which commonly
afflicts simple least-squares (LS) fitting. A numerical and empirical approach
is taken where the Bayesian Prior PDFs are generated from fits to the light

Steric repulsion and van der Waals attraction between flux lines in disordered high Tc superconductors
We show that in anisotropic or layered superconductors impurities induce a
van der Waals attraction between flux lines. This attraction together with the
disorder induced repulsion may change the low B - low T phase diagram
significantly from that of the pure thermal case considered recently by Blatter
