    Ramon Llull : l’allegorismo ‘cortese’ nell’Arbre de filosofia d’amor

    Get PDF
This article focuses mainly on the presence of allegorical figures in Ramon Llull’s Arbre de filosofia d’amor (Tree of philosophy of love). Being acquainted with Parisian literary trends, he exploits their metaphorical resources to compensate for the technical nature of the combinatorial method and uses beautiful images to support the constant metaphysical abstraction. If he is meticulous in developing his philosophical system, then he is just as meticulous in setting out the figures that should make his writing attractive. In fact, the allegory and arboreal symbolism in his work have a rigorous arrangement that increases their aesthetic value and permits him, once the theological or philosophical structure of reference is identified, to indulge in the highest lyricism

La Città e la casa: spazi urbani e domestici in Maria Aurèlia Capmany, Natalia Ginzburg, Elsa Morante e Mercè Rodoreda

This research collects texts from Maria Aurèlia Capmany, Natalia Ginzburg, Elsa Morante and Mercè Rodoreda, four great female authors of the twentieth century, with the aim of reconstructing the physical spaces they described in their books. These texts offer several cues to reflect on the representation of space in female literature. The study starts from the canonical contrast between the internal space, linked to the primary perception, and the external space, regulated by social dynamics. More specifically, the effects of the caused by the prevarication of the former on the latter. The goal is not to draft an exhaustive history of theories of space in literature but, once the distinctive features are highlighted, to investigate through the novel the depths of individual feeling that, in the case of female subjectivity, shows several critical issues

    Ramon Llull : l'allegorismo 'cortese' nell'Arbre de filosofia d'amor

This article focuses mainly on the presence of allegorical figures in Ramon Llull's Arbre de filosofia d'amor (Tree of philosophy of love). Yxart and Capuana, the difficulty of being the first

    Get PDF
This article refers to the work and correlation of two intellectuals, the Catalan Josep Yxart and the Italian Luigi Capuana. Observing the new French theories —both intellectuals have reflected on Taine's aesthetic theories and Zola's methodological proposals— allowed them to eliminate the provincialism of art. The novel, meanwhile, as opposed to rhetoric poetry, represented an example of "modernity". Beginning with a romantic-idealistic world, with all its moral and aesthetic implications, both intellectuals will converge on the new naturalist procedure, becoming the first pioneers in their countries

Pathway analysis for genetic association studies: to do, or not to do? That is the question

In Genetic Analysis Workshop 18 data, we used a 3-stage approach to explore the benefits of pathway analysis in improving a model to predict 2 diastolic blood pressure phenotypes as a function of genetic variation. At stage 1, gene-based tests of association in family data of approximately 800 individuals found over 600 genes associated at p<0.05 for each phenotype. At stage 2, networks and enriched pathways were estimated with Cytoscape for genes from stage 1, separately for the 2 phenotypes, then examining network overlap. This overlap identified 4 enriched pathways, and 3 of these pathways appear to interact, and are likely candidates for playing a role in hypertension. At stage 3, using 157 maximally unrelated individuals, partial least squares regression was used to find associations between diastolic blood pressure and single-nucleotide polymorphisms in genes highlighted by the pathway analyses. However, we saw no improvement in the adjusted cross-validated R(2). Although our pathway-motivated regressions did not improve prediction of diastolic blood pressure, merging gene networks did identify several plausible pathways for hypertension

An Examination of Factors Associated with LGBTQ+ College Students\u27 Adoption of Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) as an HIV Prevention Method

Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is an effective human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention medication taken after exposure, yet it is not widely used in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) community. Understanding its acceptability is vital, given this population\u27s increased risk for contracting HIV. Drawing from the Health Literacy Skills Framework and the Theory of Planned Behavior, this study provides an examination of PEP-related awareness and knowledge, as well as intention to request and use PEP. Using a cross-sectional survey design, a convenience sample of 131 LGBTQ+ college students from a Southeastern university was recruited through email and social media. Survey responses were analyzed using chi-square tests, t-tests, and logistic regression to identify factors associated with PEP. Findings indicate that awareness of PEP was significantly related to race, prior HIV-related discussions with providers, previous HIV testing, use of student health services, health literacy, and general health knowledge. To test knowledge, those indicating PEP awareness were asked further questions. However, very few respondents provided correct responses. Intention to request a PEP prescription was significantly related to normative and control beliefs, with intention being more likely among those who anticipate less stigma and those who had prior HIV-related discussions with a provider. Intention to take PEP was significantly related to normative beliefs, with intention being more likely among those who anticipate less stigma and perceive greater acceptance from others. Overall, these results provide partial support for the relevance of the Health Literacy Skills Framework and the Theory of Planned Behavior in understanding factors related to PEP. Future research is needed to more fully document lack of knowledge and identify predictors of knowledge deficits. Health and human service systems can utilize these findings when selecting strategies to increase PEP awareness and usage, in hopes of reducing HIV transmission and its related negative impacts
