    On the use of fuzzy logic in dependable cloud management

    The effective and efficient use of dependable cloud infrastructures requires the agreement between users and cloud providers on resources, services, operating conditions, and features as well as the mapping of users' requirements onto the cloud architecture. In this paper, we identify the different ways in which fuzzy logic can be profitably adopted in performing these tasks, providing flexibility in capturing users' needs and dealing with complex architectures and conflicting or hardly-satisfiable requirements. We specifically put forward the idea of using fuzzy logic at the user-side, to enable the specification of users' needs in crisp or fuzzy ways and their homogenous processing

    Bionics-based surgical training using 3D printed photopolymers and smart devices

    Additive manufacturing technologies support the realization of surgical training devices using, typically, photopolymers-based materials. Unfortunately, the material jetting family, able to print a large range of soft and hard polymers, requires expensive machines and materials, which are not always available. On the other hand, vat polymerization fails in the resolution/volume ratio and in the mechanical properties reconstruction. Stereolithographic 3D printers, mostly used in dental surgery, make possible to realize cheap and sustainable models for training activity using only one material, reducing the possibility to obtain different mechanical characteristics. Moreover, the printed objects have to be treated (i.e. curing post-processing) in order to obtain the required performances, that could be preserved for long term storing. The aim of the proposed approach is to assure the surgeons' skills improvement through bionic-based surgical 3D printed models and smart devices, able to reproduce the same perception of a real surgical activity. We demonstrated how it is possible develop smart devices capable to take into account the same characteristics of different materials (i.e. bone and spongy bone) even if stored for a long time

    Rare jaw bone tumor: The importance of multidisciplinary management and minimally invasive treatment

    Objective: The aim of this study was to present a mini review of oral Cementoblastoma and to report a particular case of this tumor. The Cementoblastoma is a rare benign lesion that represents less than 1-6% of all odontogenic tumors. Cementoblastoma, in the current WHO classification of odontogenic tumors, falls under the category of mesenchymal tumors (WHO 2017) and it is characterized by the proliferation of cementum-like tissue and, in all cases, tends to be associated with an erupting permanent tooth, most often the first molar. Case Presentation: A 15-year-old female presented a great Cementoblastoma with cortical expansion that affected the left mandibular body, extending from the canine to the first premolar (size 28x24 mm) and involving the mandibular canal. Surgery was performed under general anesthesia with total excision of the lesion, which was then sent for histological analysis. Due to the high risk of nerve injuries and the extreme fragility of the remaining bone after surgery, which required plates and intermaxillary blockage, the surgical site was regenerated with an iliac crest graft together with autologous and synthetic bone. Results: For the mini-review, 107 articles were found, but only 26 were selected. The patient was monitored for 12 months after surgery; a perfect healing was reported without complications, and she showed no signs of recurrence. Conclusions: This case report emphasizes the usefulness of clinical choices in a rare case of cementoblastoma of great size in a very young patient. In this condition, finding the most effective eradicative and reconstructive treatment, following the last published protocols, could achieve optimal clinical and psychological patient outcomes

    Cytogenetic analysis of three sea catfish species (Teleostei, Siluriformes, Ariidae) with the first report of Ag-NOR in this fish family

    Despite their ecological and economical importance, fishes of the family Ariidae are still genetically and cytogenetically poorly studied. Among the 133 known species of ariids, only eight have been karyotyped. Cytogenetic analyses performed on Genidens barbus and Sciades herzbergii revealed that both species have 2n = 56 chromosomes and Cathorops aff. mapale has 2n = 52 chromosomes: Genidens barbus has 10 Metacentrics (M), 14 Submetacentrics (SM), 26 Subtelocentrics (ST), and 6 Acrocentrics (A), Sciades herzbergii has 14M, 20SM, 18ST and 4A, whereas Cathorops aff. mapale has 14M, 20SM, and 18ST. The nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) were found in a single chromosome pair on the short arm of a large-sized ST pair in Genidens barbus and on the short arm of a middle-size SM pair in Cathorops aff. mapale. Multiple NORs on the short arms of two large-sized ST pairs were found in Sciades herzbergii. The occurrence of diploid numbers ranging from 2n = 52 through 56 chromosomes and the presence of different karyotypic compositions, besides the number and position of NORs suggest that several numeric and structural chromosome rearrangements were fixed during the evolutionary history of this fish family

    Supporting User Requirements and Preferences in Cloud Plan Selection

    With the cloud emerging as a successful paradigm for conveniently storing, accessing, processing, and sharing information, the cloud market has seen an incredible growth. An ever-increasing number of providers offer today several cloud plans, with different guarantees in terms of service properties such as performance, cost, or security. While such a variety naturally corresponds to a diversified user demand, it is far from trivial for users to identify the cloud providers and plans that better suit their specific needs. In this paper, we address the problem of supporting users in cloud plan selection. We characterize different kinds of requirements that may need to be supported in cloud plan selection and introduce a very simple and intuitive, yet expressive, language that captures different requirements as well as preferences users may wish to express. The corresponding formal modeling permits to reason on requirements satisfaction to identify plans that meet the constraints imposed by requirements, and to produce a preference-based ranking among such plans

    A Fuzzy-Based Brokering Service for Cloud Plan Selection

    The current cloud market features a multitude of cloud services that differ from one another in terms of functionality or of security/performance guarantees. Users wishing to use a cloud service for storing, processing, or sharing their data must be able to select the service that best matches their desiderata. In this paper, we propose a novel, user centric, brokering service for supporting users in the specification of requirements and enabling their evaluation against available cloud plans, assessing how much the different plans can satisfy the user\u2019s desiderata. Our brokering service allows users to specify their desiderata in an easy and intuitive way by using natural language expressions and high-level concepts. Fuzzy logic and fuzzy inference systems are adopted to quantitatively assess the compliance of cloud services with the users\u2019 desiderata, and hence to help users in the cloud service selection process
