    Mirror Map as Generating Function of Intersection Numbers: Toric Manifolds with Two K\"ahler Forms

    In this paper, we extend our geometrical derivation of expansion coefficients of mirror maps by localization computation to the case of toric manifolds with two K\"ahler forms. Especially, we take Hirzebruch surfaces F_{0}, F_{3} and Calabi-Yau hypersurface in weighted projective space P(1,1,2,2,2) as examples.     Investigating the driving mechanisms of coronal mass ejections

    The objective of this investigation was to first examine the kinematics of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) using EUV and coronagraph images, and then to make a comparison with theoretical models in the hope to identify the driving mechanisms of the CMEs. We have studied two CMEs which occurred on 2006 Dec. 17 (CME06) and 2007 Dec. 31 (CME07). The models studied in this work were catastrophe, breakout, and toroidal instability models. We found that after the eruption, the accelerations of both events exhibited a drop before increasing again. Our comparisons with the theories suggested that CME06 can be best described by a hybrid of the catastrophe and breakout models while CME07 is most consistent with the breakout model.Comment: 9 pages 7 figure

    Scaling relations in early-type galaxies belonging to groups

    We present a photometric analysis of a large sample of early-type galaxies in 16 nearby groups, imaged with the Wide-Field Camera on the Isaac Newton Telescope. Using a two-dimensional surface brightness decomposition routine, we fit Sersic (r^{1/n}) and exponential models to their bulge and disk components respectively. Dividing the galaxies into three subsamples according to the X-ray luminosities of their parent groups, we compare their photometric properties. Galaxies in X-ray luminous groups tend to be larger and more luminous than those in groups with undetected or low X-ray luminosities, but no significant differences in n are seen. Both normal and dwarf elliptical galaxies in the central regions of groups are found to have cuspier profiles than their counterparts in group outskirts. Structural differences between dwarf and normal elliptical galaxies are apparent in terms of an offset between their ``Photometric Planes'' in the space of n, r_e and mu_0. Dwarf ellipticals are found to populate a surface, with remarkably low scatter, in this space with significant curvature, somewhat similar to the surfaces of constant entropy proposed by Marquez etal (2001). Normal ellipticals are offset from this distribution in a direction of higher specific entropy. This may indicate that the two populations are distinguished by the action of galaxy merging on larger galaxies.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 8 pages, 8 postscript figure

    Structural and magnetic properties of E-Fe_{1-x}Co_xSi thin films deposited via pulsed laser deposition

    We report pulsed laser deposition synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline Fe1-xCox Si thin films on Si (111). X-ray diffraction, transmission electron, and atomic force microscopies reveal films to be dense, very smooth, and single phase with a cubic B20 crystal structure. Ferromagnetism with significant magnetic hysteresis is found for all films including nominally pure FeSi films in contrast to the very weak paramagnetism of bulk FeSi. For Fe1-xCoxSi this signifies a change from helimagnetism in bulk, to ferromagnetism in thin films. These ferromagnetic thin films are promising as a magnetic-silicide/silicon system for polarized current production, manipulation, and detection.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures accepted in the Applied Physics Letter

    Decomposition analysis of LTREs may facilitate the design of short-term ecotoxicological tests

    This study compared two methods, based on re-analyzed data from a partly published life table response experiment (LTRE), to help determine the optimal approach for designing ecotoxicological assessments. The 36-day LTRE data recorded the toxic effects of cadmium (Cd) and imidacloprid, alone and in combination, on the reproduction and survivorship of aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris). We used this data to construct an age-classified matrix model (six age classes, each 6 days long) to estimate aphid population growth rate (λ) under each treatment. For each treatment, an elasticity analysis and a demographic decomposition analysis were performed, and results were compared. Despite different results expected from the two toxicants, the elasticity values were very similar. The elasticity of λ with respect to survival was highest in the first age class, and that with respect to fertility was highest in the second age class. The demographic decomposition analysis examined how changes in life-history traits contributed to differences in λ between control and treated populations (Δλ). This indicated that the most important contributors to Δλ were the differences in survival (resulting from both demographic sensitivity and toxicity) in the first and the second age classes of aphids and differences in fertility in the third and the fourth age classes. Additionally, the toxicants acted differently. Cd reduced Δλ by impairing fertility at third age class and reducing survivorship from the second to the third age class. Imidacloprid mostly reduced survivorship at the first and second age classes. The elasticity and decomposition analyses showed different results, because these methods addressed different questions about the interaction of organism life history and sensitivity to toxicants. This study indicated that the LTRE may be useful for designing individual-level ecotoxicological experiments that account for both the effects of the toxicant and the demographic sensitivity of the organism
