The Role of HCE in a Political Statirist's Mock Campaign for Governor

    Get PDF
The state of Hawai'i is unique because no single ethnic group constitutes a majority (Sato, 1994). However, the population is far fiom being a 'hannonious melting pot' with racial tensions even considered a problem in the schools (Watson-Gegeo, 1990). Kawamoto (1993) describes the residents as reflecting a "mosaic" of ethnic integration with identities being investigated, preserved, and celebrated. Nevertheless, the people of Hawai'i do share a common language, Hawai'i Creole English (HCE), which is spoken by just under half of the state's population of over one million residents (Romaine, 1994). As a descendant of the Hawai'i Pidgin English (HPE) developed by immigrant sugarcane plantation workers from about 1890-1910 (Reineke, 1969; Sato, 19S5), HCE serves as a marker of "local" identity that unites the otherwise diverse population (Kawamoto, 1993; Sato, 1991; Watson-Gegeo, 1990). This solidarity function is thought to be associated with a pride in belonging to the group and would be extended to positive attitudes toward the language ofthe group (HCE), but this is not the case. ln this paper, I will first explore the history of language in the islands, the domains and functions of HCE use, the specific linguistic structures and features that characterize it apart from Standard English (SE), and the research on attitudes toward HCE. This framework will then be applied to ananalysis ofone speaker's use of the language

Improved Access and Participation for Persons with Disabilities in Local Governance

    Get PDF
The disability agenda has only gained adequate attention in the public administration discourse after the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of PWDs (CRPD) was enacted on 13 December 2006, followed by the launching of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 which included Goal No. 3 on Good Health and Well Being, and Goal No. 10 on Reduced Inequalities. In the Philippines, Republic Act 7277 known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons and Republic Act 10070 which provided for the creation of Persons with Disabilities Affairs Office (PDAO) in local government units are among the laws currently governing disability affairs matters. This paper looks into the status of the implementation of RA 10070 in the Provincial Government of Camarines Norte, Philippines. The researcher used qualitative methodology including key informants’ interview, focus group discussion case analysis and documentary analysis. The paper ends by the establishment of a framework, the Disability-Inclusive Theory or ACCESS Theory, that discusses the conditions and elements affecting the formulation of policies and enactment of local laws that provide access and other means to eventually empower PWDs and enable them to become more active participants in their respective communities

An Electronic Alert to Reduce Postoperative Delirium in the Older Adult

    Get PDF
Older adults frequently experience delirium after surgery, contributing to a decline in quality of life, increasing morbidity and mortality rates, and adding significant costs to the healthcare system. The Beers Criteria was developed by the American Geriatrics Society and lists medications correlated with a decline in cognition among older adults. These medications are commonly administered in the perioperative period by anesthesia practitioners. At a large university hospital, an educational video was distributed, followed by the launch of an electronic health record alert advising over 300 anesthesia practitioners to reduce dosing or omit Beers Criteria medications in patients aged 70 or older. The total administration and total mean dosage of Beers Criteria medications administered were measured across four study periods: pre-educational video/pre-alert, post-education/pre-alert, and at two post-education/post-alert time points in select surgeries. This quality improvement project demonstrated significant reduction in Beers Criteria medications administered to patients 70 years or older to reduce rates of cognitive decline

Estudio y diseño de un helipuerto elevado de uso sanitario para el Hospital Puerta del Mar de Cádiz

    Get PDF
In the recent years, Puerta del Mar from Cádiz has been the reference hospital in the Cádiz and Ceuta province. This has resulted in a large influx of patients, including those transferred by helicopter. However, the lack of a heliport in the capital of Cádiz has led to landing situations where the safety means have been precarious, endangering the lives of the people the aircraft transports. This project pretends to mitigate this problem from an academic point of view. To this end, a feasibility study and preliminary design of an elevated heliport for medical use will be carried out for the Puerta del Mar Hospital in the city of Cádiz, always following the related applicable regulations. The labor will consist of several phases, starting from a study to check the needs and real viability of the heliport, and concluding in a work plan for the assembly of the proposed structure, including climatological studies, dimensioning of the surfaces, calculation of the structure, etc. With this target in mind, the aim is also to improve the Andalusian and Spanish health transport network, always with the final purpose of improving society and people's quality of life
