Persistence of magnetic field driven by relativistic electrons in a plasma
The onset and evolution of magnetic fields in laboratory and astrophysical
plasmas is determined by several mechanisms, including instabilities, dynamo
effects and ultra-high energy particle flows through gas, plasma and
interstellar-media. These processes are relevant over a wide range of
conditions, from cosmic ray acceleration and gamma ray bursts to nuclear fusion
in stars. The disparate temporal and spatial scales where each operates can be
reconciled by scaling parameters that enable to recreate astrophysical
conditions in the laboratory. Here we unveil a new mechanism by which the flow
of ultra-energetic particles can strongly magnetize the boundary between the
plasma and the non-ionized gas to magnetic fields up to 10-100 Tesla (micro
Tesla in astrophysical conditions). The physics is observed from the first
time-resolved large scale magnetic field measurements obtained in a laser
wakefield accelerator. Particle-in-cell simulations capturing the global plasma
and field dynamics over the full plasma length confirm the experimental
measurements. These results open new paths for the exploration and modelling of
ultra high energy particle driven magnetic field generation in the laboratory
Leishmania Parasites Drive PD-L1 Expression in Mice and Human Neutrophils With Suppressor Capacity
Neutrophils play an important role in the outcome of leishmaniasis, contributing either to exacerbating or controlling the progression of infection, a dual effect whose underlying mechanisms are not clear. We recently reported that CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and dendritic cells of Leishmania amazonensis-infected mice present high expression of PD-1 and PD-L1, respectively. Given that the PD-1/PD-L1 interaction may promote cellular dysfunction, and that neutrophils could interact with T cells during infection, we investigated here the levels of PD-L1 in neutrophils exposed to Leishmania parasites. We found that both, promastigotes and amastigotes of L. amazonensis induced the expression of PD-L1 in the human and murine neutrophils that internalized these parasites in vitro. PD-L1-expressing neutrophils were also observed in the ear lesions and the draining lymph nodes of L. amazonensis-infected mice, assessed through cell cytometry and intravital microscopy. Moreover, expression of PD-L1 progressively increased in neutrophils from ear lesions as the disease evolved to the chronic phase. Co-culture of infected neutrophils with in vitro activated CD8+ T cells inhibits IFN-Îł production by a mechanism dependent on PD-1 and PD-L1. Importantly, we demonstrated that in vitro infection of human neutrophils by L braziliensis induced PD-L1+ expression and also PD-L1+ neutrophils were detected in the lesions of patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis. Taken together, these findings suggest that the Leishmania parasite increases the expression of PD-L1 in neutrophils with suppressor capacity, which could favor the parasite survival through impairing the immune response

[ARIA 2019: An Integrated Care Pathway for Allergic Rhinitis in Portugal]
The Allergic Rhinitis and Its Impact on Asthma (ARIA) initiative started more than 20 years ago and has developed and disseminated evidence-based guidelines and projects in the field of allergic rhinitis. This initiative is currently focused on providing patient-centred guidelines that contribute to an integrated care pathway between the various levels of care and take advantage of digital solutions, and the introduction of integrated care pathways in clinical practice has been recommended. In this article we describe the adaptation for Portugal of the ARIA Integrated Care Pathways document. After a brief review of the epidemiology and impact of allergic rhinitis in Portugal and the activities carried out in Portugal within the ARIA initiative, we describe the broad knowledge base used for the development of recommendations for the pharmacological treatment of allergic rhinitis, and these recommendations are based on the GRADE methodology, real world evidence acquired by mobile technology (mHealth) and resulting from allergenic exposure chamber studies. What follows is a summary of integrated care pathways for allergen immunotherapy produced in 2019. Allergen immunotherapy is considered an example of precision medicine where the use of mHealth technologies will improve stratification for patient selection and response monitoring. These recommendations were considered as best practices of integrated patient-centred care supported by digital systems from Directorate General for Health and Food Safety of the European Union (DG Santé) and represent the ARIA Phase 4 Change Management strategy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Preventing and Treating Womenâs Postpartum Depression: A Qualitative Systematic Review on Partner-Inclusive Interventions
Partner-related factors associated with the occurrence of Postpartum Depression (PPD) may justify the partnerâs inclusion in preventive and treatment approaches. The aim of this qualitative systematic review was to synthesize the literature on partner-inclusive interventions designed to prevent or treat postpartum depression (PPD) in women. In accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, the systematic search of studies published between 1967 and May 2015 in PsycINFO and PubMed identified 26 studies that met the inclusion criteria, which reported on 24 interventions. The following partner parameters were analyzed: participation type, session content, mental health assessment, attendance assessment, and the effects of partnerâs participation on the womenâs response to the interventions. Total participation by the partner was mostly reported in the prevention studies, whereas partial participation was reported in the treatment studies. The session content was mostly based on psychoeducation about PPD and parenthood, coping strategies to facilitate the transition to parenthood such as the partnerâs emotional and instrumental support, and problem-solving and communication skills. Some benefits perceived by the couples underscore the relevance of the partnerâs inclusion in PPD interventions. However, the scarce information about the partnerâs attendance and the associated effects on the womenâs intervention outcomes, along with methodological limitations of the studies, made it difficult to determine if the partnerâs participation was associated with the interventionâs efficacy. Conclusions about the clinical value of including partners in PPD interventions are still limited. More research is warranted to better inform health policy strategies
