    Multi-hypothesis machine translation evaluation

    Reliably evaluating Machine Translation (MT) through automated metrics is a long-standing problem. One of the main challenges is the fact that multiple outputs can be equally valid. Attempts to minimise this issue include metrics that relax the matching of MT output and reference strings, and the use of multiple references. The latter has been shown to significantly improve the performance of evaluation metrics. However, collecting multiple references is expensive and in practice a single reference is generally used. In this paper, we propose an alternative approach: instead of modelling linguistic variation in human reference we exploit the MT model uncertainty to generate multiple diverse translations and use these: (i) as surrogates to reference translations; (ii) to obtain a quantification of translation variability to either complement existing metric scores or (iii) replace references altogether. We show that for a number of popular evaluation metrics our variability estimates lead to substantial improvements in correlation with human judgements of quality by up 15%

    Theoretical and experimental study of high-pressure synthesized B20-type compounds Mn1x_{1-x}(Co,Rh)x_xGe

    The search and exploration of new materials not found in nature is one of modern trends in pure and applied chemistry. In the present work, we report on experimental and \textit{ab initio} density-functional study of the high-pressure-synthesized series of compounds Mn1x_{1-x}(Co,Rh)x_xGe. These high-pressure phases remain metastable at normal conditions, therewith they preserve their inherent noncentrosymmetric B20-type structure and chiral magnetism. Of particular interest in these two isovalent systems is the comparative analysis of the effect of 3d3d (Co) and 4d4d (Rh) substitution for Mn, since the 3d3d orbitals are characterized by higher localization and electron interaction than the 4d4d orbitals. The behavior of Mn1x_{1-x}(Co,Rh)x_xGe systems is traced as the concentration changes in the range 0x10 \leq x \leq 1. We applied a sensitive experimental and theoretical technique which allowed to refine the shape of the temperature dependencies of magnetic susceptibility χ(T)\chi(T) and thereby provide a new and detailed magnetic phase diagram of Mn1x_{1-x}Cox_xGe. It is shown that both systems exhibit a helical magnetic ordering that very strongly depends on the composition xx. However, the phase diagram of Mn1x_{1-x}Cox_xGe differs from that of Mn1x_{1-x}Rhx_xGe in that it is characterized by coexistence of two helices in particular regions of concentrations and temperatures.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figure

    Electrolysis experiments with rotating disc electrodes of copper, amalgamated copper, and platinum in anhydrous hexamethylphosphortriamide are described. It is shown that the generation of solvated electrons is a primary process. In the same solutions (0.2 M LiCl + 0.09 to 0.20 M HCl) hydrogen evolution occurs as a direct proton discharge step and not through a reaction with the solvated electron(s)

    Reference bias in monolingual machine translation evaluation

    In the translation industry, human translations are assessed by comparison with the source texts. In the Machine Translation (MT) research community, however, it is a common practice to perform quality assessment using a reference translation instead of the source text. In this paper we show that this practice has a serious issue - annotators are strongly biased by the reference translation provided, and this can have a negative impact on the assessment of MT quality

    Dermal extracellular matrix response to facetem implant: a randomised controlled experimental study

    Background. A leading concept in modern regenerative medicine is the perspective of using own body resources to remodel organs and tissues via the formation of “living scaffold”. A pivotal role in the formation of dermal scaffold is played by fibroblasts that produce extracellular matrix (ECM).Aim. A study of the fibroblast activation mechanism mediating synthesis of the dermal ECM fibrillar component under the Facetem filler administration.Methods. The experimental trial was conducted in Wistar male rats (72 animals). Animals had 0.05 mL Facetem (Korea) injections subdermally. The filler is a calcium-containing product featuring gradual degradation delivered through structural microspheric properties of the Lattice-pore technology. Biological material was sampled at weeks 1 and 2 of months 1, 2, 3 and 5. Tissues were paraffin-embedded in standard histological assays and stained with Mallory’s trichrome, Picrosirius red in polarisation microscopy and immunohistochemistry with collagen types I, III and elastin antibodies (Abcam).Results. Collagen distribution in dermis and the filling zone suggests that collagen production occurs by week 2 of the Facetem filler placement followed by an increase in synthesised matrix volume to 4.39 ± 0.7 for collagen type I and 3.9 ± 0.2 for collagen type III (p < 0.05). The synthetic activity of fi broblasts reduces by month 3, albeit with collagen production remaining above control even by the end of month 5. Elastin synthesis also initiates by week 2 of the filler injection in dermis and grows by month 3.Conclusion. The presence of Facetem filler triggers a foreign body inflammatory response in dermis. This multifactorial process initiates with protein adsorption proceeding to dermal cell recruitment and modulation of fibroblasts and macrophages. Activation of these cell types induces neocollagenesis entailing the extracellular matrix synthesis and expansion in dermis
