    Bethe ansatz solvability and supersymmetry of the M2M_2 model of single fermions and pairs

    A detailed study of a model for strongly-interacting fermions with exclusion rules and lattice N=2\mathcal N=2 supersymmetry is presented. A submanifold in the space of parameters of the model where it is Bethe-ansatz solvable is identified. The relation between this manifold and the existence of additional, so-called dynamic, supersymmetries is discussed. The ground states are analysed with the help of cohomology techniques, and their exact finite-size Bethe roots are found. Moreover, through analytical and numerical studies it is argued that the model provides a lattice version of the N=1\mathcal N=1 super-sine-Gordon model at a particular coupling where an additional N=(2,2)\mathcal N=(2,2) supersymmetry is present.     BACKGROUND: There is conflicting evidence in the literature on the association between (elevated) serum B12 concentrations and subsequent disease or mortality. We evaluated in the NHANES general population the association of serum B12 concentrations as well as vitamin B12 supplement intake with all-cause, cardiovascular, and cancer-related mortality, while taking into account demographic and lifestyle factors and significant other diseases which are known to be associated with poorer outcome. METHODS: The main outcomes of our study were all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and cancer-related mortality. Mortality status and cause of death were determined by NHANES-linked National Death Index public access files through December 31, 2015. The association of serum B12 concentrations and vitamin B12 supplement intake with mortality was assessed with Cox proportional hazard (PH) models, with adjustment for a number of relevant demographic and lifestyle factors and comorbidity. RESULTS: The final study population of 24,262 participants had a mean age of 48 (SD 19) years; 50.1% were males. The median follow-up duration was 109 months (range 1-201 months). On the census day of December 31, 2015, 3023 participants were determined as deceased (12.5%). The fully adjusted Cox PH model indicated that low serum B12 concentrations  700 pmol/l were associated with an increase in cardiovascular mortality only (HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.01-2.06, p = 0.042). Participants with a diagnosis of hypertension, dyslipidemia, CVD, and cancer more frequently used vitamin B12-containing supplements than those without these diagnoses. We could not demonstrate an association between vitamin B12 supplement intake and mortality, when adjusted for comorbidity. CONCLUSIONS: In the general population of NHANES, low serum B12 concentrations were associated with a moderate increase in all-cause mortality. There was a small but significant increase in cardiovascular mortality in the groups with low or high serum B12. High intake of vitamin B12 in the form of supplements was not associated with any adverse effect on mortality and therefore can be regarded as safe

    A phase II study of paclitaxel in heavily pretreated patients with small-cell lung cancer.

    The purpose of the study was to delineate the efficacy and toxicity of paclitaxel (Taxol, Bristol Myers Squibb) in the treatment of drug resistant small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Patients with SCLC relapsing within 3 months of cytotoxic therapy received paclitaxel 175 mg m(-2) intravenously over 3 h every 3 weeks. The dose of paclitaxel was adjusted to the toxicity encountered in the previous cycle. Of 24 patients entered into the study, 24 and 21 were assessable for response and toxicity respectively. There were two early deaths and two toxic deaths. No complete and seven partial responses (29%) (95%CI 12-51%) were observed and five patients had disease stabilization. The median survival (n = 21) was 100 days. Life-threatening toxicity occurred in four patients; in others (non)-haematological toxicity was manageable. Paclitaxel is active in drug-resistant SCLC. Further investigation in combination with other active agents in this poor prognosis group is appropriate

    Application of the Jacobi Davidson method for spectral low-rank preconditioning in computational electromagnetics problems

    [EN] We consider the numerical solution of linear systems arising from computational electromagnetics applications. For large scale problems the solution is usually obtained iteratively with a Krylov subspace method. It is well known that for ill conditioned problems the convergence of these methods can be very slow or even it may be impossible to obtain a satisfactory solution. To improve the convergence a preconditioner can be used, but in some cases additional strategies are needed. In this work we study the application of spectral lowrank updates (SLRU) to a previously computed sparse approximate inverse preconditioner.The updates are based on the computation of a small subset of the eigenpairs closest to the origin. Thus, the performance of the SLRU technique depends on the method available to compute the eigenpairs of interest. The SLRU method was first used using the IRA s method implemented in ARPACK. In this work we investigate the use of a Jacobi Davidson method, in particular its JDQR variant.     Plasma citrulline during the first 48 h after onset of necrotizing enterocolitis in preterm infants

    Background: Levels of plasma citrulline (citrulline-P), a biomarker for enterocyte function, might be useful for the monitoring the course of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Our aim was to evaluate whether citrulline-P levels during the first 48 h (h) after NEC onset were associated with need for surgery, survival, and intestinal recovery. Methods: In preterm infants with NEC (Bell's stage ≥2) we measured citrulline-P levels during the first 48 h after NEC onset. Categorizing the measurements into 0–8 h, 8–16 h, 16–24 h, 24–36 h, and 36–48 h, we determined the course of citrulline-P using linear regression analyses. Next, we analyzed whether citrulline-P levels measured at 0–24 h and 24–48 h differed between conservative and surgical treatment, survivors and nonsurvivors, and equal/below and above total group's median time to full enteral feeding (FEFt). Results: We included 48 infants, median gestational age 28.3 [IQR:26.0–31.4] weeks, birth weight 1200 [IQR:905–1524] grams. Citrulline-P levels decreased the first 48 h (B per time interval: -1.40 μmol, 95% CI, −2.73 to −0.07, p = 0.04). Citrulline-P was not associated with treatment, nor with survival. Citrulline-P at 0–24 h, but not 24–48 h, was higher in infants with FEFt ≤20 days than in infants with FEFt >20 days (20.7 [IQR:19.9–25.3] µmol/L (n = 13) vs. 11.1 [IQR:8.4–24.0] µmol/L (n = 11), p = 0.049), with a citrulline-P cut-off value of 12.3 μmol/L. Conclusion: Citrulline-P levels decreased the first 48 h after NEC onset, suggesting on-going intestinal injury. In survivors, measuring citrulline-P in the first 24 h after NEC onset may provide an indication for intestinal recovery rate

    Folate reference interval estimation in the Dutch general population

    Background: Folate functions as an enzyme co-factor within the one-carbon metabolic pathway, providing key metabolites required for DNA synthesis and methylation. Hence, insufficient intake of folate can negatively affect health. As correct interpretation of folate status is dependent on a well-established reference interval, we set out to perform a new estimation following the restandardization of the Roche folate assay against the international folate standard. Materials and methods: The folate reference interval was estimated using samples obtained from the Dutch population-based Lifelines cohort. The reference interval was estimated using two methods: a nonparametric estimation combined with bootstrap resampling and by fitting the data to a gamma distribution. The lower reference limit was verified in a patient cohort by combined measurement of folate and homocysteine. Results: Dependent on the method used for estimation and in- or exclusion of individuals younger than 21 years of age, the lower reference limit ranged from 6.8 to 7.3 nmol/L and the upper reference limit ranged from 26 to 38.5 nmol/L. Applying a lower reference limit of 7.3 nmol/L resulted in the following percentage of folate deficiencies over a period of 12 months: general practitioner 15.5% (IQR 4.0%), general hospital 12.8% (IQR 5.3%), academic hospital 9.6% (IQR 4.3%). Conclusions: We estimated the folate reference interval in the Dutch general population which is not affected by a folic acid fortification program and verified the obtained lower reference limit by homocysteine measurements. Based on our results, we propose a folate reference interval independent of age of 7.3-38.5 nmol/
