The Discovery of the Gold Seal in 1784 and the Waves of Historiography Ever Since

    Get PDF
According to the Hou Han shu, in 57 B.C.E. an emissary from the land we now call Japan arrived at the court of the Later Han dynasty in Luoyang. Although we don’t know his name or who his sovereign was, he was awarded a seal and ribbon. The seal promptly disappeared from history for the next 1,727 years. It was unexpectedly discovered in an irrigation ditch being repaired by a farmer in Kyushu. For the next 233 years (until now), every detail about this golden seal has been the topic of extensive debate with over 350 books and articles devoted to the topic. This essay discusses that lengthy debate and tries to understand it on its own terms

Awareness that Dogs Can Be Carriers for Ticks that Transmit Lyme Disease

Background and Purpose: Tick exposure places one at possible risk for Lyme disease. Awareness of this fact can possibly prevent its occurrence. Urban college students are often in outdoor areas where there is potential tick exposure. Methods: College students in New York City (n=714) were surveyed about demographics, Lyme-disease knowledge, Lyme disease related topics, and dog-specific items. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors that are related to awareness that dogs can be carriers for ticks that transmit Lyme disease. Results: For both dog owners and those who do not own dogs, certain Lyme disease knowledge topics, previously heard of Lyme disease, and aware of a Lyme disease dog vaccine were each associated with increased odds for awareness about dogs being carriers. Among dog owners, African American race/ethnicity and knowing someone diagnosed with Lyme disease were each associated with increased odds for awareness, while previous diagnosis of Lyme disease had decreased odds for awareness. Conclusion: One-on-one education by physicians, nurses, veterinarians, healthcare practitioners and public health practitioners could help address some of the lack of awareness among urban college students that dogs can be carriers for ticks that can transmit Lyme disease

Hispanic Acculturation: Associations with Family Planning Behaviors and Attitudes

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association of Hispanic acculturation in the United States (US) with family planning behaviors and attitudes. METHODS. Surveys of 225 Hispanic women were collected that used acculturation measures of number of years lived in US and the Short Acculturation Scale for Hispanics (SASH) along with questions about family planning behaviors including birth control use, sterilization, and abortion. RESULTS. SASH-Language statistically differed (p=0.03) where those with ‘yes birth control’ had significantly lower English acculturation (M=6.10, SD=1.77) than those with ‘no birth control’ (M=7.00, SD=3.16). Greater US acculturation on SASH-Ethnic Social Relations was positively associated with the attitude that finances are important when considering to have children (r=0.18, p<0.05). Number of years lived in the US was positively associated with the attitude that it is a woman’s personal choice to have an elective termination of pregnancy (r=0.19, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS. Healthcare providers should consider patient acculturation level when discussing family planning topics. It is possible that a more detailed explanation concerning the reasons for family planning is necessary when discussing family planning topics with Hispanic patients who exhibit higher levels of English language acculturation
