Some system considerations in configuring a digital flight control - navigation system
A trade study was conducted with the objective of providing a technical guideline for selection of the most appropriate computer technology for the automatic flight control system of a civil subsonic jet transport. The trade study considers aspects of using either an analog, incremental type special purpose computer or a general purpose computer to perform critical autopilot computation functions. It also considers aspects of integration of noncritical autopilot and autothrottle modes into the computer performing the critical autoland functions, as compared to the federation of the noncritical modes into either a separate computer or with a R-Nav computer. The study is accomplished by establishing the relative advantages and/or risks associated with each of the computer configurations
In situ aerosol measurements taken during the 2007 COPS field campaign at the Hornisgrinde ground site
Copyright @ 2011 Royal Meteorological Society.The Convective and Orographically-induced Precipitation Study (COPS) campaign was conducted during the summer of 2007. A suite of instruments housed at the top of the Hornisgrinde Mountain (1156 m) in the Black Forest region of south-west Germany provided datasets that allow an investigation into the physical, chemical and hygroscopic properties of the aerosol particles sampled during COPS. Organic mass loadings were found to dominate the aerosol composition for the majority of the project, exceeding 8 µg m−3 during a period of high pressure, high temperature, and low wind speed. The ratio of organic:sulphate sub-micron mass concentration exceeds 10:1 during the same time period. Back trajectories show air from this time-frame passing slowly over the local forest and not passing over any local anthropogenic sources. Occasional peaks in nitrate mass loadings were associated with changes in the typical wind direction from south-westerly to north-westerly where air had passed over the Stuttgart region. Size distribution data shows a dominant accumulation-mode when the measurement site was free from precipitation events. A sharp increase in ultrafine particle number concentration was seen during most days commencing around noon. The apparent growth of these particles is associated with an increase in organic mass loading, suggesting condensational growth. For the most part, with the exception of the high pressure period, the aerosol properties recorded during COPS were comparable to previous studies of continental aerosol properties.NER
Exact diagonalization of the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on finite bcc lattices to estimate properties on the infinite lattice
Here we generate finite bipartite body-centred cubic lattices up to 32
vertices. We have studied the spin one half Heisenberg antiferromagnet by
diagonalizing its Hamiltonian on each of the finite lattices and hence
computing its ground state properties. By extrapolation of these data we obtain
estimates of the T = 0 properties on the infinite bcc lattice. Our estimate of
the T = 0 energy agrees to five parts in ten thousand with third order spin
wave and series expansion method estimates, while our estimate of the staggered
magnetization agrees with the spin wave estimate to within a quarter of one

Thermodynamic basis of the concept of "recombination resistances"
The concept of "recombination resistance" introduced by Shockley and Read
(Phys. Rev. 87, 835 (1952)) is discussed within the framework of the
thermodynamics of irreversible processes ruled by the principle of the minimum
rate of entropy production. It is shown that the affinities of recombination
processes represent "voltages" in a thermodynamic Ohm-like law where the net
rates of recombinations represent the "currents". The quantities thus found
allow for the definition of the "dissipated power" which is to be related to
the rate of entropy production of the recombination processes dealt with.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev.
f_B with lattice NRQCD including O(1/m_Q^2) corrections
We calculate the heavy-light meson decay constant using lattice NRQCD action
for the heavy quark and Wilson quark action for the light quark over a wide
range in the heavy quark mass. Simulations are carried out on a 16^3 x 32
lattice with 120 quenched gauge configurations generated with the plaquette
action at beta=5.8. For the heavy quark part of the calculation, two sets of
lattice NRQCD action and current operator are employed. The first set includes
terms up to O(1/m_Q) both in the action and the current operator, and the
second set up to O(1/m_Q^2), where m_Q is the bare mass of the heavy quark.
Tree-level values with tadpole improvement are employed for the coefficients in
the expansion. We compare the results obtained from the two sets in detail and
find that the truncation error of higher order relativistic corrections for the
decay constant are adequately small around the mass of the b quark. We also
calculate the 1S hyperfine splitting of B meson, M_{B_s} - M_B and f_{B_s}/f_B
with both sets and find that the 1/m_Q^2 corrections are negligible. Remaining

Relation of Cognitive Reserve and Task Performance to Expression of Regional Covariance Networks in an Event-Related fMRI Study of Nonverbal Memory
Cognitive reserve (CR) has been established as a mechanism that can explain individual differences in the clinical manifestation of neural changes associated with aging or neurodegenerative diseases. CR may represent individual differences in how tasks are processed (i.e., differences in the component processes), or in the underlying neural circuitry (of the component processes). CR may be a function of innate differences or differential life experiences. To investigate to what extent CR can account for individual differences in brain activation and task performance, we used fMRI to image healthy young individuals while performing a nonverbal memory task. We used IQ estimates as a proxy for CR. During both study and test phase of the task, we identified regional covariance patterns whose change in subject expression across two task conditions correlated with performance and CR. Common brain regions in both activation patterns were suggestive of a brain network previously found to underlie overt and covert shifts of spatial attention. After partialing out the influence of task performance variables, this network still showed an association with the CR, i.e., there were reserve-related physiological differences that presumably would persist were there no subject differences in task performance. This suggests that this network may represent a neural correlate of CR
A characteristic particle method for traffic flow simulations on highway networks
A characteristic particle method for the simulation of first order
macroscopic traffic models on road networks is presented. The approach is based
on the method "particleclaw", which solves scalar one dimensional hyperbolic
conservations laws exactly, except for a small error right around shocks. The
method is generalized to nonlinear network flows, where particle approximations
on the edges are suitably coupled together at the network nodes. It is
demonstrated in numerical examples that the resulting particle method can
approximate traffic jams accurately, while only devoting a few degrees of

Oral serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin improves duodenal immune reconstitution and absorption function in patients with HIV enteropathy.
ObjectivesTo examine the impact of serum-derived bovine immunoglobulin, an oral medical food known to neutralize bacterial antigen and reduce intestinal inflammation, on restoration of mucosal immunity and gastrointestinal function in individuals with HIV enteropathy.DesignOpen-label trial with intensive 8-week phase of bovine serum immunoglobulin (SBI) 2.5 g twice daily with a 4-week washout period and an optional 9-month extension study.MethodsHIV enteropathy was defined as chronic gastrointestinal symptoms including frequent loose or watery stools despite no identifiable, reversible cause. Upper endoscopy for tissue immunofluorescent antibody assay and disaccharide gut permeability/absorption studies were performed before and after 8 weeks of SBI to test mucosal immunity and gastrointestinal function. Blood was collected for markers of microbial translocation, inflammation, and collagen kinetics. A validated gastrointestinal questionnaire assessed changes in symptoms.ResultsAll eight participants experienced profound improvement in symptoms with reduced bowel movements/day (P = 0.008) and improvements in stool consistency (P = 0.008). Gut permeability was normal before and after the intervention, but D-xylose absorption increased in seven of eight participants. Mucosal CD4 lymphocyte densities increased by a median of 139.5 cells/mm2 from 213 to 322 cells/mm2 (P = 0.016). Intestinal-fatty acid binding protein (I-FABP), a marker of enterocyte damage, initially rose in seven of eight participants after 8 weeks (P = 0.039), and then fell below baseline in four of five who continued receiving SBI (P = 0.12). Baseline serum I-FABP levels were negatively correlated with subsequent rise in mucosal CD4 lymphocyte densities (r = -0.74, P = 0.046).ConclusionSBI significantly increases intestinal mucosal CD4 lymphocyte counts, improves duodenal function, and showed evidence of promoting intestinal repair in the setting of HIV enteropathy
