Simulation of a Machine Learning Based Controller for a Fixed-Wing UAV with Distributed Sensors
Recent research suggests that the information obtained from arrays of sensors distributed on the wing of a fixed-wing small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can provide information not available to conventional sensor suites. These arrays of sensors are capable of sensing the flow around the aircraft and it has been indicated that they could be a potential tool to improve flight control and overall flight performance. However, more work needs to be carried out to fully exploit the potential of these sensors for flight control. This work presents a 3 degrees-of-freedom longitudinal flight dynamics and control simulation model of a small fixed-wing UAV. Experimental readings of an array of pressure and strain sensors distributed across the wing were integrated in the model. This study investigated the feasibility of using machine learning to control airspeed of the UAV using the readings from the sensing array, and looked into the sensor layout and its effect on the performance of the controller. It was found that an artificial neural network was able to learn to mimic a conventional airspeed controller using only distributed sensor signals, but showed better performance for controlling changes in airspeed for a constant altitude than holding airspeed during changes in altitude. The neural network could control airspeed using either pressure or strain sensor information, but having both improved robustness to increased levels of turbulence. Results showed that some strain sensors and many pressure sensors signals were not necessary to achieve good controller performance, but that the pressure sensors near the leading edge of the wing were required. Future work will focus on replacing other elements of the flight control system with machine learning elements and investigate the use of reinforcement learning in place of supervised learning.</p
Anaemia in pregnancy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women of Far North Queensland: a retrospective cohort study
Aim: Anaemia during pregnancy is common worldwide. In Australia between 7.1% and 11% of mothers have been reported to have anaemia in pregnancy. Higher rates are reported for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women (Townsville: 34.2%, remote Northern Territory: 50%). The present study describes anaemia in pregnancy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women of Far North Queensland.
Methods: Health service information was analysed for 2076 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women who gave birth between 2006 and 2010. The prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy, characteristics of the mothers and pregnancy outcomes were described. Logistic regression for bivariate analyses and multivariable linear modelling with and without imputed data were used to compare those mothers who had anaemia in pregnancy with those who did not.
Results: More than half of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women (54.5% (95% CI: 52.4%, 56.7%)) had anaemia in pregnancy. For mothers who gave birth in 2009 and 2010 (n = 1796) with more complete data, those who were iron deficient during pregnancy were more likely to be anaemic (RR: 1.40, P = <0.001). Mothers (29.0%) from localities of relative socioeconomic advantage had lower risk of anaemia in pregnancy (RR: 0.86, P = 0.003), as did mothers (31.9%) who were obese (RR: 0.87, P = 0.013).
Conclusions: The prevalence of anaemia in pregnancy among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women of Far North Queensland is high. Prevention and treatment of anaemia will improve the health of these mothers, and possibly the health and early development of their children

Forging volumetric methods
The last two decades have seen a āvolumetric turnā within Anglophone social sciences and humanities scholarship. This turn is premised on the idea that space may be better understood in three-dimensional terms ā with complex heights and depths ā rather than as a series of two-dimensional areas or surfaces. While there is an increasingly diverse and rich set of scholarship accounting for voluminous complexities in the air, oceans, ice, mountains, and undergrounds, all too often this work foregrounds state and military-led approaches to volume. This has resulted in a limited methodological toolkit through which to explore voluminous complexities as they emerge and extend beyond military and state contexts. Often reliant on elite interviews, archives, and cartographies, there has been little critical discussion of both methodological practice and the āflatnessā of research outputs articulating three-dimensional worlds. In this paper we address this by foregrounding the role of immersive and multisensory methodologies (sounding volumes, seeing-sensing drone volumes, and object volumes). To conclude, we offer avenues for further inquiry, including attending to shifting everyday voluminous experiences in the Anthropocene, and the need to diversify the communication of āvolumeā research
