Differential Calculus on Manifolds with a Boundary. Applications
This paper contains a set of lecture notes on manifolds with boundary and
corners, with particular attention to the space of quantum states. A
geometrically inspired way of dealing with these kind of manifolds is
presented, and explicit examples are given in order to clearly illustrate the
main ideas.Comment: 42 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in International

Therapy of Canine Hyperlipidemia with Bezafibrate.
BackgroundBezafibrate (BZF) is effective in the treatment of hypertriglyceridemia in human patients, but there are no data on its use in dogs.ObjectiveTo assess the safety of BZF in hyperlipidemic dogs and its efficacy in decreasing serum triglyceride (TG) and cholesterol (CHO) concentrations.AnimalsForty-six dogs, 26 females and 20 males, mean (±SD) age of 9 (±3) years, with TG ≥150 mg/dL (33 dogs also were hypercholesterolemic [>300 mg/dL]).MethodsProspective, uncontrolled clinical trial. Dogs were treated with bezafibrate once daily, using 200 mg tablets at a dosage of 4-10 mg/kg (depending on body weight). Serum TG and CHO concentrations and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and creatine kinase (CK) activity before and after 30 days of treatment were compared.ResultsSixteen dogs (34.8%) had primary hyperlipidemia, and 30 dogs (65.2%) had secondary hyperlipidemia (including spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism [41.3%, n = 19/46], chronic treatment with glucocorticoids [10.8%, n = 5/46], and hypothyroidism [15.2%, n = 7/46]). After 30 days, serum TG concentration normalized (<150 mg/dL) in 42 dogs (91.3%) and CHO concentration normalized (<270 mg/dL) in 22 of 33 dogs (66.7%). There was no difference in baseline TG concentration between the primary and secondary hyperlipidemia subgroups, but the decrease in TG concentration after treatment was greater in the primary hyperlipidemia subgroup. No adverse effects were observed, but ALT activity decreased significantly after 30 days of treatment. Conclusions and clinical importanceOver 30 days, BZF was safe and effective in treatment of primary and secondary hyperlipidemia in dogs

A Pedagogical Intrinsic Approach to Relative Entropies as Potential Functions of Quantum Metrics: the - Family
The so-called -z-\textit{R\'enyi Relative Entropies} provide a huge
two-parameter family of relative entropies which includes almost all well-known
examples of quantum relative entropies for suitable values of the parameters.
In this paper we consider a log-regularized version of this family and use it
as a family of potential functions to generate covariant symmetric
tensors on the space of invertible quantum states in finite dimensions. The
geometric formalism developed here allows us to obtain the explicit expressions
of such tensor fields in terms of a basis of globally defined differential
forms on a suitable unfolding space without the need to introduce a specific
set of coordinates. To make the reader acquainted with the intrinsic formalism
introduced, we first perform the computation for the qubit case, and then, we
extend the computation of the metric-like tensors to a generic -level
system. By suitably varying the parameters and , we are able to recover
well-known examples of quantum metric tensors that, in our treatment, appear
written in terms of globally defined geometrical objects that do not depend on
the coordinates system used. In particular, we obtain a coordinate-free
expression for the von Neumann-Umegaki metric, for the Bures metric and for the
Wigner-Yanase metric in the arbitrary -level case.Comment: 50 pages, 1 figur
Experimental estimation of entanglement at the quantum limit
Entanglement is the central resource of quantum information processing and
the precise characterization of entangled states is a crucial issue for the
development of quantum technologies. This leads to the necessity of a precise,
experimental feasible measure of entanglement. Nevertheless, such measurements
are limited both from experimental uncertainties and intrinsic quantum bounds.
Here we present an experiment where the amount of entanglement of a family of
two-qubit mixed photon states is estimated with the ultimate precision allowed
by quantum mechanics.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Optimal Operation Conditions for a Methane Fuelled SOFC and Microturbine Hybrid System
The study of a hybrid system obtained coupling a methane fuelled gas microturbine (MTG) and a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was performed. The objective of this study is to evaluate the operation conditions as a function of the independent variables of the system, which are the current density and fuel utilization factor. Numerical simulations were carried out in developing a C++ computer code, in order to identify the preferable plant configuration and both the optimal methane flow and the current density. Operation conditions are able to ensure elasticity and the most suitable fuel utilization factor. To confirm the reliability of the models, results of the simulations were compared with reference results found in literature
Nutritional Properties of Milk from Dairy Ewes Fed with a Diet Containing Grape Pomace
Abstract: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a diet containing a 10% of
grape pomace (GP) on the milk yield, chemical-nutritional characteristics, total phenolic compounds
(TPCs), antioxidant activity (AOA), fatty acids and proteins profile of dairy ewe’s milk. Forty-six
ewes were dived into two groups: a control group (Ctrl), fed a standard diet, and an experimental
group (GP+), whose diet was supplemented with 10% of GP on dry matter. The trial lasted 60 days
and milk samples were collected and analyzed at the beginning (T0) and after 60 (T60) days. Dietary
enrichment with GP did not affect the yield and the chemical composition of the milk. TPCs and AOA
were not affected by the diet. After 60 days, the diet induced an increase in monounsaturated fatty
acids (MUFA) and a decrease in medium chain saturated fatty acids (MCSFA), but the total saturated
fatty acids (SFA), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), short chain saturated fatty acids (SCSFA) and
long chain saturated fatty acids (LCSFA) were not modified. A decrease in the C14 desaturation
index and an increase in the C18 index were also detected. Total caseins and whey protein were not
affected by GP, even if a lower content of k-casein in GP+ milk compared to Ctrl milk was observed
on the 60th day. The results of the present study suggest that 10% of GP can be included in the diet
of lactating ewes without modifying milk gross composition but inducing significantly changes the
fatty acid profile
