Methodological shortcomings in estimating Armington elasticities

CGEMs are one of the most potentially powerful tools for simulating policies. However, a major restriction they face is them needing a huge number of parameters that are not always available, and even at times impossible to obtain. When CGEMs are applied to trade, Armington elasticities of substitution are one of those key sets. The common practice among CGEMs builders has been to impose these values, either at will or by using those stemming from other existing research. There is general consensus, however, that econometrically estimated parameters for each case study would substantially improve the robustness of results. Unfortunately, most of the so obtained elasticities are considered underestimates of both the real and theoretically expected parameters. This gave rise to a growing concern on the eventual role played by methodological and empirical issues in this matter. Armington Elasticities: Estimates for Uruguayan Manufacturing Sectors

Armington elasticities of substitution – AEs – are a crucial set of parameters that allows CGEMs applied to trade to be operational. In the case of Uruguay, no estimated values for these parameters have been available until now, forcing researchers to impose them arbitrarily. We here start filling this gap by providing estimated AEs for 32 Uruguayan 4-digit manufacturing industries belonging to the Food, Beverages and Tobacco; Chemical Products; and Textiles economic sectors, using monthly and quarterly data along 1989-2001. The specification of the models follows the simplified benchmark proposed by Armington (1969) that has been used in most of the existing applied research. The resulting estimated AEs are in line with those reported by the international literature and hence of a smaller size than expected by CGEM modellers. Our econometric analyses also show that the low values of the estimated elasticities are not due to the characteristics of the available data and/or the methodology used. Instead, a plausible explanation suggested by our results relates to the theoretical models used being misspecified, particularly due to the omission of relevant variables.Armington elasticity, Substitutability, Computable General Equilibrium Model.

El presente trabajo tiene el propósito de dar cuenta de la aplicación de una red de aprendizaje configurada a partir de actividades de cálculo diferencial diseñadas por un grupo de profesores de nivel medio superior de Instituto Politécnico Nacional. La red de aprendizaje permite al docente tener material didáctico y al estudiante poner en juego el conocimiento previo con el nuevo al transitar de una representación a otra, para este estudio fue resuelta por profesores del área de matemáticas, física, química e inglés y a estudiantes

La modelación matemática y la enseñanza de las cónicas

El objetivo del trabajo que se reporta es ilustrar cómo se puede utilizar la modelación matemática en el estudio de las cónicas, en particular circunferencia y elipse, con la ayuda de un software de Geometría Dinámica. Se darán algunos ejemplos de las actividades de enseñanza llevadas a cabo por estudiantes de Bachillerato (edades entre 16 y 17 años) y cómo se pueden utilizar instrumentos de evaluación formativa (rúbricas, listas de cotejo, bitácoras y matrices de resultados, entre otras; SEAM, 2010) para facilitar el análisis de los resultados de las actividades

Modelación matemática en el desarrollo de funciones lineales y variación directamente proporcional

El presente es un reporte de investigación en el aula sobre el desarrollo del concepto de función en estudiantes de bachillerato. En particular se trabajó el concepto de función lineal y variación directamente proporcional utilizando la modelación matemática como estrategia de enseñanza. Se usó el modelo de enseñanza aprender matemática, haciendo matemática como marco teórico, este modelo proporciona las orientaciones conceptuales y metodológicas de la investigación. Los instrumentos que sirvieron para organizar la información y facilitar las conclusiones fueron listas de cotejo, matrices de resultados y rúbricas
