Johannes 6 en die heilige Nagmaal

John 6 and holy Communion. It is often observed that the Gospel of John, in its account of the passion week, does not give attention to the Lord's Supper. John definitely does recount a final, special, climactic supper of Jesus with his disciples (John 13:21 ff). But what he fails to mention is the institution of the bread and cup which relate to the body and blood of Christ. Already in chapter 6 John had presented what clearly seems to be an interpretation of the bread and the cup in connection with the Lord’s Supper. In a long, interpretative discourse Jesus speaks about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. The heart of that interpretative discourse is that the believer is to eat and drink Jesus Himself. This is stated quite crassly in materialistic terms. The metaphor of eating his flesh and drinking his blood is however used by Jesus to explain the mystery of a continuing communion with Him as the crucified and resurrected Lord

THE TESTIMONY ON JESUS — A PNEUMATOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONThe issue in this article is to what extent people in this postmodern era can know the real meaning about the nature of Jesus of Nazareth. In his First Epistle John answers three questions concerning this problem. How do we know that Jesus is the Son of God? How are we personally related to this extraordinary truth that Jesus of Nazareth is the Son of God? In what way should this personal relationship enter the life of those who are born again? By explaining the work of the Holy Spirit John indicates that there is a close interaction between the doctrine of Jesus the Son of God and the spirituallife of believers

    Stilistiese analise van nuwe-testamentiese tekste

All too often literary structures in the New Testament are passed off in scholarly literature as mere literary niceties serving only aesthetic ends. Too little consideration has been given to the possible exegetical signif icance of such structures to the interpretation of biblical texts. This article is an attempt to present an apologetic for the value of stylistic analysis of New Testament texts as an aid in interpreting the New Testament. It must be kept in mind that to the biblical authors, artistry in the use of stylistic structures was not an end in itself, but a means towards more effective communication of the message

Until the 20th century theologians paid little attention to the work of the Holy Spirit in the world. As a result of ecumenical theology there came more interest for the cosmological aspects of pneumatology. The most fundamental question in connection with this issue is that of the manner in which the Holy Spirit is operating in our world. Is the work of the Holy Spirit in this word put in operation without the activity of the Bible and the church so that we can indicate a direct way from the Spirit to the cosmos or is the Spirit working in this world through the Bible, the Church and through the faithful members of the Church? It is not compatible with the teaching of the Bible to disconnect the work of the Spirit from the Word of God and the Church. In some matters the Spirit as a Person is fully independent, but it is impossible to accept a work in the world in which the Bible and the Church are not involved

The fellowship of the saints in contemporary South African society

The subject of this study is: What does the fellowship of the saints that we practise in the Church, mean to us in the present South African society. The division of the subject is as follows: Firstly an analysis of the concept fellowship of the saints; secondly some remarks about the Church in the present situation; and thirdly a closer look at the meaning the fellowship of the saints can have on our behaviour in society

Simulated Versus Observed Cluster Eccentricity Evolution

The rate of galaxy cluster eccentricity evolution is useful in understanding large scale structure. Rapid evolution for z<z < 0.13 has been found in two different observed cluster samples. We present an analysis of projections of 41 clusters produced in hydrodynamic simulations augmented with radiative cooling and 43 clusters from adiabatic simulations. This new, larger set of simulated clusters strengthens the claims of previous eccentricity studies. We find very slow evolution in simulated clusters, significantly different from the reported rates of observational eccentricity evolution. We estimate the rate of change of eccentricity with redshift and compare the rates between simulated and observed clusters. We also use a variable aperture radius to compute the eccentricity, r200_{200}. This method is much more robust than the fixed aperture radius used in previous studies. Apparently radiative cooling does not change cluster morphology on scales large enough to alter eccentricity. The discrepancy between simulated and observed cluster eccentricity remains. Observational bias or incomplete physics in simulations must be present to produce halos that evolve so differently.Comment: ApJ, in press, minor revision

The fast transient sky with Gaia

    Get PDF
The ESA Gaia satellite scans the whole sky with a temporal sampling ranging from seconds and hours to months. Each time a source passes within the Gaia field of view, it moves over 10 CCDs in 45 s and a lightcurve with 4.5 s sampling (the crossing time per CCD) is registered. Given that the 4.5 s sampling represents a virtually unexplored parameter space in optical time domain astronomy, this data set potentially provides a unique opportunity to open up the fast transient sky. We present a method to start mining the wealth of information in the per CCD Gaia data. We perform extensive data filtering to eliminate known on-board and data processing artefacts, and present a statistical method to identify sources that show transient brightness variations on ~2 hours timescales. We illustrate that by using the Gaia photometric CCD measurements, we can detect transient brightness variations down to an amplitude of 0.3 mag on timescales ranging from 15 seconds to several hours. We search an area of ~23.5 square degrees on the sky, and find four strong candidate fast transients. Two candidates are tentatively classified as flares on M-dwarf stars, while one is probably a flare on a giant star and one potentially a flare on a solar type star. These classifications are based on archival data and the timescales involved. We argue that the method presented here can be added to the existing Gaia Science Alerts infrastructure for the near real-time public dissemination of fast transient events.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures and 5 tables; MNRAS in pres
