A study of subjective symptoms associated with seizure disorders in adolescents

The purpose of this study was to develop a self-report questionnaire that would address subjective symptoms associated with seizures in adolescents. The study was a preliminary investigation as to the reliability and validity of the Seizure Disorder Questionnaire.;Two groups of subjects were studied. The seizure group consisted of 31 adolescents diagnosed with epilepsy and contacted through the Epilepsy Clinic at the Medical college of Virginia, the Comprehensive Epilepsy Clinic at the University of Virginia, Cumberland Hospital for Children and Adolescents in New Kent, Virginia, and the Williamsburg-James City County public schools. The control group consisted of 125 adolescents who did not have seizure disorders and were contacted through the Williamsburg-James City County Schools. It was hypothesized that the seizure group would affirm higher frequencies of symptoms associated with seizures than the control group, and that a significant difference would exist between the groups.;It was concluded that the reliability of the Seizure Disorder Questionnaire was moderate to high. The preliminary estimate of validity was supported by a significant difference between groups on 24 of the original items in the Seizure Disorder Questionnaire. A factor analysis of the 24 items suggested three factors that may represent separate sets of seizure disorder symptoms in the areas of physiology, perception, and memory

Gamers or victims of the system? Welfare reform, cynical manipulation and vulnerability

New mechanisms of conditionality enacted through current reforms of the UK welfare system are framed within contested narratives about the characteristics, rationalities and conduct of welfare users. In the problem figuration of welfare reform the orientations and conduct of welfare recipients have been conceptualised and depicted across a spectrum ranging from cynical manipulators gaming the system and subverting the original ethos of the welfare state to vulnerable individuals experiencing compounded disadvantage. This paper aims to strengthen the conceptualisation of cynical manipulation and vulnerability and to empirically investigate how narratives of these ideas are deployed by key stakeholders in the welfare system and the extent to which manipulation or vulnerability are present in the orientations and conduct of individuals in receipt of welfare support

Partly due to its simplicity, Path ORAM is the most practical ORAM scheme known to date with small client storage. We formally prove that Path ORAM has a O(log N) bandwidth cost for blocks of size B = Omega(log^2 N) bits. For such block sizes, Path ORAM is asymptotically better than the best known ORAM schemes with small client storage. Effect of Wireless Mobile Cart Access on the Level of In-service Teachers' Technology Implementation in a Southwestern Urban School District

K-12 school districts in the United States have spent billions of dollars annually to purchase and maintain educational technology giving teachers nationwide more technology to enhance teaching and learning than ever before. However, many teachers are not maximizing the use of that technology in classroom instruction. The Southwestern urban school district that was the site for this study spent $4 million dollars on the acquisition and deployment of wireless mobile laptop carts in 2006 and in 2007 to provide increased access to internet-connected computers for students. Eighty-three in-service teachers participated in taking an online survey (LoTiQ) developed by Moersch (1995). The data gathered addressed seven research questions that investigated four variables. Although 90 percent of teachers reported having access to wireless mobile carts, 60 percent said they never used them. How shared pre-start-up moments of transition and cognitions contextualize effectual and causal decisions in entrepreneurial teams

Although it is reported that early venture decisions are influenced by the relationships and common history of entrepreneurial team members, little is known about how the mutual interests and ambitions experienced in the pre-start-up phase provide a shared and relational context for joint decisions. Drawing on a multiple case study approach of nine entrepreneurial teams in new ventures, this study identifies the shared pre-start-up moments of transition during which team members’ prior work and life patterns start to change. We show that in these intense moments, shared entrepreneurial cognition evolves among team members – the relationality of which provides a unique social context for decision behaviors. Our findings conclude that effectual behaviors advance a theory of context because in simultaneously working with effectual and causal logics (albeit with varying intensities), team decisions are realized that are consistent with the relational context that emerges in the pre-start-up moment

Testing the discrimination hypothesis for female self employment migrants in the UK

peer reviewedWe propose a comparative analysis of migrants in both sectors (employment and self-employment) exploring the gender earning discrimination hypothesis. Using individual micro data from the British Household Panel Survey (1991-2008), we estimate wage equations for employed and self-employed migrants and find that, contrary to our expectations, the average earnings gap in self-employment is almost double compared to the employment sector. This finding reveals that self-employment leads migrant women to an even more precarious and vulnerable position in terms of financial means and economic power. In addition, we explore the determinants of these gaps using the econometric procedure of the decomposition (the Blinder-Oaxaca) model. We find that the variables that explain the gender gap in the employment sector are mostly observable individual characteristics like education or migration duration, confirming the human capital theory, whereas in the self-employment sector, this gap is more due to unobservable individual characteristics. Through our work, we show that including the gender perspective into migration analysis has implications for policy makers enabling them to evaluate these processes from a more social (rather than individualistic) dimension
