Vilanova. La caída del feudalismo universitario español

Marta Soler, Doctora por Harvard y actual Directora de CREA, es de Vilanova y la Geltrú. Cuenta la leyenda que Vilanova fue fundada en las afueras de La Geltrú por una pareja enamorada que no quiso someterse al servilismo de su señor feudal. A esa vila nova (villa nueva) fueron luego acudiendo otras parejas y personas que así dejaban de ser siervas y se transformaban en ciudadanas. Esa idea de ciudad de personas libres e iguales ha orientado muchas utopías posibles. La señal para iniciar la revolución de los claveles fue la emisión por radio de la canción de José Afonso 'Grândola, vila morena, terra da fraternidade Em cada esquina um amigo, em cada rosto igualdade'

Contributions from Social Theory to Sustainability for All

The sustainability of societies is an issue of utmost importance for humankind. This is reflected in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which highlight the main challenges that citizens face, including underserved groups, and set the path for finding solutions to overcome them. The achievement of the SDGs for 2030 is setting not only the political agenda, but also the scientific one. From the field of social sciences, an issue that remains underexplored is the contributions (or lack thereof, in some occasions) from social theory to the consolidation of more sustainable societies, including the underserved groups. In this vein, the aim of this article is to provide robust evidence on how social theory has contributed to such improvement and is still doing it. To this end, it provides an analysis of how the advancements made from social theory with social impact have contributed to the achievement of the SDGs. Alongside, this article also presents how some theories that never had social impact at their core have hindered the improvement of societies. This dual approach provides a clear picture of the role that social theory can play in the achievement of the SDGs, as well as evidence towards the overcoming of exclusionary theories with no scientific basis

Life experiences with Paulo and Nita

In this article I share with the readers my life experiences with Paulo Freire’s work and with Paulo and Nita Freire.  Friendship, love, passion and rigorous work have transformed the life of thousands of people, opening for these people new opportunities and creating hopes for change.  Along these lines I narrate through reflections, memories, anecdotes and historical events how Paulo has been and is present in our lives, and how his work is still a pillar for adult education and current pedagogy, as well as for the future developments in this field of study.  ResumoNeste artigo vou compartilhar com os leitores minhas experiências de vida com o trabalho de Freire e meu relacionamento com Paulo e Nita Freire. Amizade, amor, paixão e trabalho rigoroso têm transformado a vida de milhares de pessoas, abrindo-lhes novas oportunidades e criando esperanças de mudança. Ao longo destas linhas eu relato através de reflexões, memórias, estórias e acontecimentos históricos como era Paulo e como ele ainda se faz presente em nossas vidas assim como seu trabalho ainda é um pilar para a educação de adultos assim como para a pedagogía atual e também para os próximos desenvolvimentos nesta área de estudo
