Created in 1918, Franz Schreker's opera Die Gezeichneten ("The Stigmatized") has provoked many reactions criticizing the omnipresence of uninhibited and detrimental sexuality, focusing indiscriminately on the subject, the music or the composer himself. The work depicts the tragedy of a young and ugly nobleman, who believed in redemption through love, and sinks into madness after gifting the city of Genoa with an island dedicated to carnal pleasures called "ElysĂ©e". This article seeks to restore the place of the operatic material itself: paradoxically reduced to the anecdotal in its contemporary reception, the work nevertheless deploys powerful mechanisms that, illustrated by the mise en abyme of the Genovese arriving on the island, which has a powerful impact on the spectators. Our study will uncover the means deployed by the opera to impose to its intro-digetic spectator - and by extension the audience of the work - a sensation of stasis that proves to be profoundly erotic. A first section, devoted to the aesthetics of the living painting of the Third Act, analyses the different modalities of visual subjugation to which the Genvese are subjected. In a second section this analysis of erotic stasis will continue but on the musical level, studying the orchestral textures characteristic of Schreker's aesthetic
DNA methyltransferases and stress-related genes expression in zebrafish larvae after exposure to heat and copper during reprogramming of DNA methylation
DNA methylation, a well-studied epigenetic mark, is important for gene regulation in adulthood and for development. Using genetic and epigenetic approaches, the present study aimed at evaluating the effects of heat stress and copper exposure during zebrafish early embryogenesis when patterns of DNA methylation are being established, a process called reprogramming. Embryos were exposed to 325âÎŒg Cu/L from fertilization (<1âh post fertilization - hpf) to 4âhpf at either 26.5â°C or 34â°C, followed by incubation in clean water at 26.5â°C till 96âhpf. Significant increased mortality rates and delayed hatching were observed following exposure to combined high temperature and Cu. Secondly, both stressors, alone or in combination, significantly upregulated the expression of de novo DNA methyltransferase genes (dnmt3) along with no differences in global cytosine methylation level. Finally, Cu exposure significantly increased the expression of metallothionein (mt2) and heat shock protein (hsp70), the latter being also increased following exposure to high temperature. These results highlighted the sensitivity of early embryogenesis and more precisely of the reprogramming period to environmental challenges, in a realistic situation of combined stressors
Ethical hurdles in the prioritization of oncology care
With finite resources, healthcare payers must make difficult choices regarding spending and the ethical distribution of funds. Here, we describe some of the ethical issues surrounding inequity in healthcare in nine major European countries, using cancer care as an example. To identify relevant studies, we conducted a systematic literature search. The results of the literature review suggest that although prevention, access to early diagnosis, and radiotherapy are key factors associated with good outcomes in oncology, public and political attention often focusses on the availability of pharmacological treatments. In some countries this focus may divert funding towards cancer drugs, for example through specific cancer drugs funds, leading to reduced expenditure on other areas of cancer care, including prevention, and potentially on other diseases. In addition, as highly effective, expensive agents are developed, the use of value-based approaches may lead to unacceptable impacts on health budgets, leading to a potential need to re-evaluate current cost-effectiveness thresholds. We anticipate that the question of how to fund new therapies equitably will become even more challenging in the future, with the advent of expensive, innovative, breakthrough treatments in other therapeutic areas
