Computing approximate standard errors for genetic parameters derived from random regression models fitted by average information REML
Approximate standard errors (ASE) of variance components for random regression coefficients are calculated from the average information matrix obtained in a residual maximum likelihood procedure. Linear combinations of those coefficients define variance components for the additive genetic variance at given points of the trajectory. Therefore, ASE of these components and heritabilities derived from them can be calculated. In our example, the ASE were larger near the ends of the trajectory
From emergency to durable water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) interventions: insights from the protracted Syrian refugee situation in Lebanon
Abstract
Emergency water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programming often fails to meet defined humanitarian or sectoral standards and the needs of those affected by crises. There have been calls to shift toward more resilient, durable and sustainable WASH interventions. Drawing on a mix of qualitative methods, this paper traces the nature and evolution of the factors affecting different kinds of WASH interventions in Lebanon. Factors contributing to a slow uptake of durable WASH solutions include Lebanon not being a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention, a 'no camp' policy adopted by the Government of Lebanon, aid agencies under pressure to cater for lifesaving WASH needs of the Syrian refugees, a lack of sufficient funds, Syrian refugee migration to Europe in 2014, limited Syrian refugee resettlement options, terrorism at the Lebanese border in 2014, as well as fears of nationalization of Syrian refugees – rooted in experiences from the Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. The paper demonstrates that the overall WASH response to Syrian refugees in Lebanon mirrors the interplay between aid agencies, the donor community and the Government of Lebanon. We argue that the Lebanese Government should have acted much earlier and devised a strategy flexible enough to turn a challenge into an opportunity by advocating for funds that allow for durable solutions and sustainable impact on the lives of the Syrian refugees and Lebanese hosting communities. We conclude by highlighting policy and practical lessons for refugee-hosting countries and donor agencies.

WASH interventions are used in nearly all emergency contexts to help reduce risks. The unsustainability of emergency WASH interventions has led to attempts for more durable solutions. In Lebanon, durable WASH interventions that benefitted both Syrian refugees and host communities were initiated by the end of 2014. Measuring social exclusion and its distribution in England
Background:
Social exclusion is a multidimensional concept referring processes which restrict the ability of individuals or groups to participate fully in society. While social exclusion has been used to explore patterns of disadvantage, it has been difficult to measure. Thus, we aimed to use population-based data to measure social exclusion and its constituent domains and to describe its distribution in England.
Methods:
We used data from Understanding Society in 2009/2010 develop a multidimensional measurement approach, replicated in 2018/2019. We defined five domains of social exclusion from the literature and expert consultation: material, relational, political, digital, and structural. In both waves, we identified measures for each domain, then conducted principal component analysis to identify the components. We generated domain scores and an overall social exclusion score. We described the distribution of social exclusion and its domains by sex, region, age, and ethnicity.
Results:
We found the level of social exclusion was higher in the youngest age group and decreased by age. We found elevated levels of overall social exclusion for ethnic minoritised groups including African, Arab, and Caribbean groups compared to White British groups. We found distinct patterns within each domain.
Discussion:
We developed an overall measure of social exclusion with five domains, and finding distinct patterns of social exclusion by age, ethnicity, and region which varied across domain. These findings suggest that attention should be paid to the separate domains due to different population distributions. This measurement approach moves beyond conceptual discussions of social exclusion and demonstrates the utility of a quantitative measure of social exclusion for use in health and social research
How Much Transparency is Too Much? A Moment-to-Moment Analysis of Viewer Comfort in Response to Animal Slaughter Videos
The Glass Walls project is a series of videos created by the American Meat Institute that works to create increased transparency regarding agricultural industry practices surrounding animal slaughter and carcass fabrication. To assess the impact of the increased transparency presented in these videos, this study examined consumer response to sampled portions of these videos using a novel measurement approach to agricultural communications, continuous response measurement or “dial testing.” Two samples of college students who differed in their level of agricultural involvement provided continuous ratings of perceived comfort while viewing the two videos. Findings indicated that participants with higher agricultural involvement reported less discomfort with the material being presented. Further, critical moments within the videos that elicited a strong uncomfortable response were identified through this novel measurement approach. These moments elicited strong responses, regardless of viewers’ level of agricultural involvement. Results suggested that attempts at increased transparency may elicit discomfort from the consumer. Therefore, practitioners and researchers should seek to develop ways to present the same material, but in a way that creates less discomfort for the audience. Academic Librarians Examination of University Students’ and Faculty’s Perceptions of Open Educational Resources
A survey of 2,574 students and 1,157 faculty members across ten institutions of postsecondary education in the state of Utah was conducted by the Utah Academic Libraries Consortium. Survey items were created to understand the influence of textbook costs on student academic behavior and the viability of faculty adopting open educational resources (OER) as a solution to the cost of textbooks and the possible need for librarian support of OER. Two-year and four-year institutions were compared to identify differences that might exist between them. Most students felt that their academic success was negatively impacted by textbook cost, particularly at two-year institutions where students registered for fewer courses because of associated textbook costs. Faculty survey findings showed that adjunct professors were more likely to require a traditionally copyright-restricted textbook. Approximately 90% of participants indicated they would be willing to use suitable OER for their course, and almost half of survey participants expressed a desire for help finding these resources
Kepler Eclipsing Binary Stars. VI. Identification of Eclipsing Binaries in the K2 Campaign 0 Data-set
The original {\it Kepler} mission observed and characterized over 2400
eclipsing binaries in addition to its prolific exoplanet detections. Despite
the mechanical malfunction and subsequent non-recovery of two reaction wheels
used to stabilize the instrument, the {\it Kepler} satellite continues
collecting data in its repurposed {\it K2} mission surveying a series of fields
along the ecliptic plane. Here we present an analysis of the first full
baseline {\it K2} data release: the Campaign 0 data-set. In the 7761 light
curves, we have identified a total of 207 eclipsing binaries. Of these, 97 are
new discoveries that were not previously identified. Our pixel-level analysis
of these objects has also resulted in identification of several false positives
(observed targets contaminated by neighboring eclipsing binaries), as well as
the serendipitous discovery of two short period exoplanet candidates. We
provide catalog cross-matched source identifications, orbital periods,
morphologies and ephemerides for these eclipsing systems. We also describe the
incorporation of the K2 sample into the Kepler Eclipsing Binary
Catalog\footnote{\url{keplerebs.villanova.edu/k2}}, present spectroscopic
follow-up observations for a limited selection of nine systems, and discuss

Planet Hunters VII. Discovery of a New Low-Mass, Low-Density Planet (PH3 c) Orbiting Kepler-289 with Mass Measurements of Two Additional Planets (PH3 b and d)
We report the discovery of one newly confirmed planet ( days,
) and mass determinations of two previously
validated Kepler planets, Kepler-289 b ( days,
) and Kepler-289-c ( days,
), through their transit timing variations
(TTVs). We also exclude the possibility that these three planets reside in a
Laplace resonance. The outer planet has very deep (), high
signal-to-noise transits, which puts extremely tight constraints on its host
star's stellar properties via Kepler's Third Law. The star PH3 is a young
( Gyr as determined by isochrones and gyrochronology), Sun-like star
with , , and
K. The middle planet's large TTV amplitude (
hours) resulted either in non-detections or inaccurate detections in previous
searches. A strong chopping signal, a shorter period sinusoid in the TTVs,
allows us to break the mass-eccentricity degeneracy and uniquely determine the
masses of the inner, middle, and outer planets to be ,
, and , which we designate PH3 b, c, and
d, respectively. Furthermore, the middle planet, PH3 c, has a relatively low
density, g/cm for a planet of its mass, requiring a
substantial H/He atmosphere of by mass, and joins a

Planet Hunters X: Searching for Nearby Neighbors of 75 Planet and Eclipsing Binary Candidates from the K2 Kepler Extended Mission
We present high-resolution observations of a sample of 75 K2 targets from
Campaigns 1-3 using speckle interferometry on the Southern Astrophysical
Research (SOAR) telescope and adaptive optics (AO) imaging at the Keck II
telescope. The median SOAR -band and Keck -band detection limits at 1"
were ~mag and ~mag, respectively. This
sample includes 37 stars likely to host planets, 32 targets likely to be
eclipsing binaries (EBs), and 6 other targets previously labeled as likely
planetary false positives. We find nine likely physically bound companion stars
within 3" of three candidate transiting exoplanet host stars and six likely
EBs. Six of the nine detected companions are new discoveries; one of the six,
EPIC 206061524, is associated with a planet candidate. Among the EB candidates,
companions were only found near the shortest period ones ( days), which is
in line with previous results showing high multiplicity near short-period
binary stars. This high-resolution data, including both the detected companions
and the limits on potential unseen companions, will be useful in future planet
vetting and stellar multiplicity rate studies for planets and binaries.Comment: Accepted in A
Planet Hunters. VI: An Independent Characterization of KOI-351 and Several Long Period Planet Candidates from the Kepler Archival Data
We report the discovery of 14 new transiting planet candidates in the Kepler
field from the Planet Hunters citizen science program. None of these candidates
overlapped with Kepler Objects of Interest (KOIs) at the time of submission. We
report the discovery of one more addition to the six planet candidate system
around KOI-351, making it the only seven planet candidate system from Kepler.
Additionally, KOI-351 bears some resemblance to our own solar system, with the
inner five planets ranging from Earth to mini-Neptune radii and the outer
planets being gas giants; however, this system is very compact, with all seven
planet candidates orbiting AU from their host star. A Hill
stability test and an orbital integration of the system shows that the system
is stable. Furthermore, we significantly add to the population of long period
transiting planets; periods range from 124-904 days, eight of them more than
one Earth year long. Seven of these 14 candidates reside in their host star's
