Is nonrelativistic gravity possible?
We study nonrelativistic gravity using the Hamiltonian formalism. For the
dynamics of general relativity (relativistic gravity) the formalism is well
known and called the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism. We show that if the
lapse function is constrained correctly, then nonrelativistic gravity is
described by a consistent Hamiltonian system. Surprisingly, nonrelativistic
gravity can have solutions identical to relativistic gravity ones. In
particular, (anti-)de Sitter black holes of Einstein gravity and IR limit of

A Lattice Gauge Model of Singular Marsden-Weinstein Reduction. Part I. Kinematics
The simplest nontrivial toy model of a classical SU(3) lattice gauge theory
is studied in the Hamiltonian approach. By means of singular symplectic
reduction, the reduced phase space is constructed. Two equivalent descriptions
of this space in terms of a symplectic covering as well as in terms of

Moderate lift-to-drag aeroassist
Significant performance benefits are realized via aerodynamic braking and/or aerodynamic maneuvering on return from higher altitude orbits to low Earth orbit. This approach substantially reduces the mission propellant requirements by using the aerodynamic drag, D, to brake the vehicle to near circular velocity and the aerodynamic lift, L, to null out accumulated errors as well as change the orbital inclination to that required for rendezvous with the Space Shuttle Orbiter. Broad concept evaluations were performed and the technology requirements and sensitivities for aeroassisted OTV's over a range of vehicle hypersonic L/D from 0.75 to 1.5 were systematically identified and assessed. The aeroassisted OTV is capable of evolving from an initial delivery only system to one eventually capable of supporting manned roundtrip missions to geosynchronous orbit. Concept screening was conducted on numerous configurations spanning the L/D = 0.75 to 1.5 range, and several with attractive features were identified. Initial payload capability was evaluated for a baseline of delivery to GEO, six hour polar, and Molniya (12 hours x 63.4 deg) orbits with return and recovery of the aeroassist orbit transfer vehicle (AOTV) at LEO. Evolutionary payload requirements that were assessed include a GEO servicing mission (6K up and 2K return) and a manned GEO mission (14K roundtrip)
Hall state quantization in a rotating frame
We derive electromagnetomotive force fields for charged particles moving in a
rotating Hall sample, satisfying a twofold U(1) gauge invariance principle. It
is then argued that the phase coherence property of quantization of the line
integral of total collective particle momentum into multiples of Planck's
quantum of action is solely responsible for quantization in the Hall state. As
a consequence, the height of the Hall quantization steps should remain
invariant in a rapidly rotating Hall probe. Quantum Hall particle
conductivities do not depend on charge and mass of the electron, and are

Eluate derived by extracorporal antibody-based immunoadsorption elevates the cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in podocytes via B-2 kinin receptors
Background/Aim: Patients with idiopathic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) often develop a recurrence of the disease after kidney transplantation. In a number of FSGS patients, plasmapheresis and immunoadsorption procedures have been shown to transiently reduce proteinuria and are thought to do this by eliminating a circulating factor. Direct cellular effects of eluates from immunoadsorption procedures on podocytes, the primary target of injury in FSGS, have not yet been reported. Methods: Eluates were derived from antibody-based immunoadsorption of a patient suffering from primary FSGS, a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus, and a healthy volunteer. The cytosolic free Ca2+ concentration ({[}Ca2+](i)) of differentiated podocytes was measured by single-cell fura-2 microfluorescence measurements. Free and total immunoreactive kinin levels were measured by radioimmunoassay. Results: FSGS eluates increased the {[}Ca2+](i) levels concentration dependently (EC50 0.14 mg/ml; n = 3-19). 1 mg/ml eluate increased the {[}Ca2+](i) values reversibly from 82 +/- 12 to 1,462 +/- 370 nmol/l, and then they returned back to 100 16 nmol/l (n = 19). The eluate-induced increase of {[}Ca2+](i) consisted of an initial Ca2+ peak followed by a Ca2+ plateau which depended on the extracellular Ca2+ concentration. The eluate-induced increase of {[}Ca2+](i) was inhibited by the specific B-2 kinin receptor antagonist Hoe 140 in a concentration-dependent manner (IC50 2.47 nmol/l). In addition, prior repetitive application of bradykinin desensitized the effect of eluate on {[}Ca2+](i). A colonic epithelial cell line not reacting to bradykinin did not respond to eluate either (n = 6). Similar to FSGS eluates, the eluate preparations of both the systemic lupus patient and the healthy volunteer led to a biphasic, concentration-dependent {[}Ca2+](i) increase in poclocytes which again was inhibited by Hoe 140. Free kinins were detected in all eluate preparations. Conclusion: The procedure of antibody-based immunoadsorption leads to kinin in the eluate which elevates the {[}Ca2+](i) level of podocytes via B-2 kinin receptors. Copyright (C) 2002 S. Geometric Laws of Vortex Quantum Tunneling
In the semiclassical domain the exponent of vortex quantum tunneling is
dominated by a volume which is associated with the path the vortex line traces
out during its escape from the metastable well. We explicitly show the
influence of geometrical quantities on this volume by describing point vortex
motion in the presence of an ellipse. It is argued that for the semiclassical
description to hold the introduction of an additional geometric constraint, the
distance of closest approach, is required. This constraint implies that the
semiclassical description of vortex nucleation by tunneling at a boundary is in
general not possible. Geometry dependence of the tunneling volume provides a
means to verify experimental observation of vortex quantum tunneling in the

On Combining Lensing Shear Information from Multiple Filters
We consider the possible gain in the measurement of lensing shear from
imaging data in multiple filters. Galaxy shapes may differ significantly across
filters, so that the same galaxy offers multiple samples of the shear. On the
other extreme, if galaxy shapes are identical in different filters, one can
combine them to improve the signal-to-noise and thus increase the effective
number density of faint, high redshift galaxies. We use the GOODS dataset to
test these scenarios by calculating the covariance matrix of galaxy
ellipticities in four visual filters (B,V,i,z). We find that galaxy shapes are
highly correlated, and estimate the gain in galaxy number density by combining

Electronic and structural properties of alkali doped SWNT
Comprehensive experiments on structural and transport properties of alkali intercalated
single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are presented. The increasing electron density was
measured as a shift of the Drude-edge in optical reflectivity in-situ with progressive doping. In
saturation-doped samples the Drude-edge shifts into the visible (to 25,000 - 30,000 cm— 1 for potassium
and rubidium doped samples) and the samples have a golden-brown color, similar to stage I
graphite. X-ray diffraction reveals a crystalline rope structure with expanded lattice constant, similar
to results of Duclaux et al. The change in the low temperature divergence of the resistivity after
degassing at high temperature and high vacuum and after K-doping is studied in-situ
Gibbons-Hawking Effect in the Sonic de Sitter Space-Time of an Expanding Bose-Einstein-Condensed Gas
We propose an experimental scheme to observe the Gibbons-Hawking effect in
the acoustic analog of a 1+1-dimensional de Sitter universe, produced in an
expanding, cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate. It is shown that a two-level
system created at the center of the trap, an atomic quantum dot interacting
with phonons, observes a thermal Bose distribution at the de Sitter

Weak Lensing Determination of the Mass in Galaxy Halos
We detect the weak gravitational lensing distortion of 450,000 background
galaxies (20<R<23) by 790 foreground galaxies (R<18) selected from the Las
Campanas Redshift Survey (LCRS). This is the first detection of weak lensing by
field galaxies of known redshift, and as such permits us to reconstruct the
shear profile of the typical field galaxy halo in absolute physical units
(modulo H_0), and to investigate the dependence of halo mass upon galaxy
luminosity. This is also the first galaxy-galaxy lensing study for which the
calibration errors are negligible. Within a projected radius of 200 \hkpc, the
shear profile is consistent with an isothermal profile with circular velocity
164+-20 km/s for an L* galaxy, consistent with typical disk rotation at this
luminosity. This halo mass normalization, combined with the halo profile
derived by Fischer et al (2000) from lensing analysis SDSS data, places a lower
limit of (2.7+-0.6) x 10^{12}h^{-1} solar masses on the mass of an L* galaxy
halo, in good agreement with satellite galaxy studies. Given the known
luminosity function of LCRS galaxies, and the assumption that for galaxies, we determine that the mass within 260\hkpc of normal
galaxies contributes to the density of the Universe (for
) or for . These lensing data suggest
that (95% CL), only marginally in agreement with the usual
Faber-Jackson or Tully-Fisher scaling. This is the most
