Chloroplast phylogeography of Mandirola hirsuta (Gesneriaceae)

O Cerrado caracteriza-se por ser um mosaico fitofisionômico que, além das savanas, abrange também formações úmidas. É possível que as formações úmidas do Cerrado contenham remanescentes da vegetação que havia antes do surgimento das fitofissionomias savânicas; alternativamente, essas formações podem ter sido colonizadas por linhagens provenientes das florestas úmidas. O objetivo deste trabalho foi testar as hipóteses de "fragmentação ancestral" e de "colonização recente" para compreender os processos que resultaram na distribuição atual de espécies de formações úmidas do Cerrado. Populações de Mandirola hirsuta (Gesneriaceae) foram amostradas em 25 locais contemplando toda sua distribuição geográfica. Foram sequenciadas as regiões intergênicas plastidias psbA-trnH e trnQ-5¿-rps16. Foram avaliados índices de diversidade e estruturação genéticas, inferidas rede de haplótipos e hipótese filogenética bayesiana e realizadas as análises demográficas. A variabilidade genética intrapopulacional foi baixa, em contraste com a alta variabilidade interpopulacional. Foram detectados sete grupos genéticos geograficamente bem delimitados e não foram observados sinais de expansão populacional recente. A divergência entre as sete linhagens principais ocorreu entre o Mioceno tardio e o Plioceno. Os resultados apoiam a hipótese de uma distribuição passada mais ampla, fragmentada com a expansão das vegetações savânicas do CerradoAbstract: There are evidences that the distribution of the tropical forests in South America was broader and continuous in the past, being reduced along the Miocene with the spread of the Dry Diagonal, composed by Caatinga, Cerrado and Chaco. The Cerrado comprises a vegetation mosaic that, in addition to the dry savannas, also includes humid formations. It is possible that the humid formations contain remnants of the vegetation that occurred on the region before the emergence of savannas; alternatively, it is possible that these formations have been colonized by rainforest lineages. The aim of this work was to test the hypotheses of "fragmentation" and "recent colonization", to understand the processes that led to the current distribution of the species of humid habitats of Cerrado. We sampled Mandirola hirsuta (Gesneriaceae) populations in 25 locations along all the group geographic range and sequenced the plastidial intergenic regions psbA-trnH and trnQ-5'-rps16. We evaluated genetic diversity and genetic structure indices, inferred haplotype network and bayesian phylogeny hypothesis and performed demographic analyzes. Intra-populational genetic diversity was low, in contrast to the high interpopulational variability. Seven genetic groups, geographically well defined, were detected and no signals of recent population expansion were detected. Severe acquired cytomegalovirus infection in a full-term, formula-fed infant: Case Report

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cases of cytomegalovirus colitis are exceptionally reported in immuno-competent infant. The pathogenesis is uncertain but breast-feeding is considered as a main source of postnatal infection.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>Here we report a full-term, formula-fed infant who developed a severe cytomegalovirus anaemia and colitis when aged 2 months.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Even if the molecular identity between the cytomegalovirus-isolate of the infant and the maternal virus could not be demonstrated, we confirmed through laboratory investigation that cytomegalovirus infection was acquired postnatally. However, the source of cytomegalovirus infection remained unclear. Alternative modes of cytomegalovirus transmission are discussed.</p

A social and ecological assessment of tropical land uses at multiple scales: the Sustainable Amazon Network

Science has a critical role to play in guiding more sustainable development trajectories. Here, we present the Sustainable Amazon Network (Rede Amazonia Sustentavel, RAS): a multidisciplinary research initiative involving more than 30 partner organizations working to assess both social and ecological dimensions of land-use sustainability in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The research approach adopted by RAS offers three advantages for addressing land-use sustainability problems: (i) the collection of synchronized and co-located ecological and socioeconomic data across broad gradients of past and present human use; (ii) a nested sampling design to aid comparison of ecological and socioeconomic conditions associated with different land uses across local, landscape and regional scales; and (iii) a strong engagement with a wide variety of actors and non-research institutions. Here, we elaborate on these key features, and identify the ways in which RAS can help in highlighting those problems in most urgent need of attention, and in guiding improvements in land-use sustainability in Amazonia and elsewhere in the tropics. We also discuss some of the practical lessons, limitations and realities faced during the development of the RAS initiative so far.Keywords: Social–ecological systems, Tropical forests, Land use, Interdisciplinary research, Sustainability, Trade-off
