The United Nations: Its Successes, Failures, and Future

    Get PDF
Organization for peace, avoidance of war, freedom from invasion, universal brotherhood of all nations and peoples--these have been the hopes and dreams of the peoples of the world for centuries. But not until the 20th century have these goals been both far away and yet so near. This century has witnessed the most horrible wars of mankind\u27s history and the greatest advances in the organization for universal peace. But which has gathered the most support? Does the world have protection from another major war? Perhaps, an understanding can be obtained through the following examination of the successes, failures, and future of the United Nations

The TeV Energy Spectrum of Mrk 421 Measured in A High Flaring State

    Get PDF
The BL Lac object (blazar) Mrk 421 was observed during its outburst in April 2004 with the Whipple 10 m telescope for a total of about 24.5 hours. The measured gamma-ray rate varied substantially over the range from 4 to 10 gamma's/min and eventually exceeded the steady gamma-ray rate of the Crab Nebula (standard candle) by a factor of 3. The overall significance of the gamma-ray signal exceeded 70 sigma and the total number of excess events was more than 10,000. The signal light curve does not show any particular variability pattern. This unique Mrk 421 outburst enabled the measurement of a high quality spectrum of very high-energy gamma rays in a high state of emission. This spectrum is a power-law and it extends beyond 10 TeV.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Proc. 30th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Merida, Mexico, 200

Space acceleration measurement system triaxial sensor head error budget

    Get PDF
The objective of the Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) is to measure and record the microgravity environment for a given experiment aboard the Space Shuttle. To accomplish this, SAMS uses remote triaxial sensor heads (TSH) that can be mounted directly on or near an experiment. The errors of the TSH are reduced by calibrating it before and after each flight. The associated error budget for the calibration procedure is discussed here

Vela-like Pulsars: A Bridge Between Young and Old

    Get PDF
This grant was in support of a guest observation using the ASCA satellite of the young, spin-powered pulsar PSR B1706-44. The pulsar is interesting for several reasons: 1) it is young and shares many similar characteristics with the Vela pulsar, 2) it is one of a few pulsars which has been detected by the EGRET detector aboard the CGRO satellite, and 3) it is one of the confirmed sources of TeV gamma-rays discovered with ground based telescopes. The goals of the observation were to search for pulsations in the X-ray domain and to study the near stellar environment to determine if the pulsar is embedded within a compact nebula as in the case of the Vela pulsar

Letter from John P. Finley to James B. Finley

John tells of sickness and great trouble, but expresses increased faith in God. He tells of riding to Dayton to overtake a company of soldiers which included relations (Robert Hough) and boys from the old neighborhood, which made his heart sick. He followed the group for 16 miles, then removed Robert and the boys from the camp, exhorting them to stay away from wicked company. The trial for the land lawsuit is set for August. John tells James that he has been in poor health but has been able to attend to the duties of his station. Sally\u27s health is declining rapidly, and the children have grown into men and women. John tells James that he is not satisfied with his location, but he is able to make a living for his family there. He would like to move and if he ever regains his health would like to travel. His doctor tells him that he will never get well as long as he continues sedentary work. Augusta College is progressing as fast as can be expected, and is in an advanced state of being finished. The preparatory school is now in session. Abstract Number - 954https://digitalcommons.owu.edu/finley-letters/1941/thumbnail.jp

John has just received James\u27 letter proposing the printing of a public journal at the Wyandot Mission. John likes the idea of publishing such a journal but has already committed to publish a paper in Urbana. If enough subscriptions are collected in Urbana, John will be under obligation to them. If not, John will accept James\u27 proposal. He asks James to keep his previous reflections about Augusta College confidential.
