Identity and memory

Ce texte reproduit la conférence donnée par Alain Finkielkraut en mai 1994, à Zagreb, dans le cadre de la tribune "Croaticum". Il traite les problèmes de la relation entre identité nationale (quête identitaire) de l\u27individu, démocratie et mémoire (rapport aux valeurs historiques). Dans la première partie, l\u27auteur jette un regard critique sur l\u27opinion fréquemment exprimée dans les milieux intellectuels occidentaux (en particulier français), qui veut que l\u27on souligne une dichotomie imaginaire entre identité et liberté, ainsi qu\u27une opposition entre nationalisme et démocratie. L\u27Occident conçoit la liberté/démocratie comme une société d\u27individus dénués de toutes leurs particularités. Dans le seconde partie, tout en tenant compte des difficultés spécifiques auxquelles est confrontée la Croatie (victime d\u27une agression armée, confrontée à l\u27incompréhension de la communauté internationale), l\u27auteur expose certains de ses points de vue sur les dangers qui, selon lui, menacent la Croatie si, dans sa quête identitaire, elle ne prend pas également en compte ses propres responsabilités issues de son passé.Tekst je autorizirano izlaganje na javnoj tribini (Croaticum) u Zagrebu, održanoj u svibnju 1994. Raspravlja se o problemu međuodnosa nacionalnog identiteta (potrage za identitetom), pojedinca, demokracije i pamćenja (odnos prema povijesnim vrijednostima). U prvom dijelu, autor se kritički osvrće na često shvaćanje (u intelektualnim krugovima na Zapadu, poglavito u Francuskoj), prema kojem se ističe zamišljena dihotomija između identiteta i slobode, kao i suprotnost između nacionalizma i demokracije. Zapad zamišlja slobodu/demokraciju u smislu pojedinaca lišenih svih svojih partikularnosti. U drugom dijelu izlaganja, uvažavajući specifične teškoće u Hrvatskoj (agresiju na zemlju, nerazumijevanje od vanjskog svijeta), autor ipak iznosi neka svoja gledišta o opasnostima koje vidi u Hrvatskoj ukoliko potraga za identitetom ne uvaži ujedno i vlastite odgovornosti iz prošlosti.The paper is an authorized version of the author\u27s presentation at a public lecture (Croaticum) held in Zagreb in May 1994. The interrelationship between national identity (search for identity), the individual, democracy and memory (i.e. the relationship to historic values is discussed). In the first part of the paper, the author gives a critical view of the frequent opinion in the West (in France) which emphasized the imagined dichotomy between identity and freedom, as well as the opposition between nationalism and democracy. The West imagines freedom/democracy in the sense of individuals stripped of all their particularities. In the second part of the paper, while acknowledging specific difficulties in Croatia (aggression on the country, misunderstanding from the outside world), the author nevertheless presents some of his views regarding the dangers which he sees in Croatia if the search for identity does not at the same time take into regard its own responsibilities from the past
