Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy in the Cirrhotic: Review of Literature on Indications and Technique

Cholelithiasis is twice more common in patients suffering from liver cirrhosis compared to overall population and in those patients, acute cholecystitis occurs significantly more often. Our goal was to review the literature and to overview the indications, contra-indications, and alternatives in the cirrhotic with biliary stones. We conducted a systematic review of the literature using the key words "Cirrhosis", "cholecystectomy", "laparoscopy"and "indications". Selected articles were reviewed for information specific to indications, contra-indications, and alternatives to laparoscopic cholecystectomy in cirrhotics. Results showed that laparoscopic cholecystectomy might offer several advantages in cirrhotic population, however cholecystectomy can be challenging: specific indications and alternatives to surgery must be discussed case by case. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy can be performed safely in selected patients with cirrhosis; special precautions are warranted regarding pneumoperitoneum pressure, trocar placement and increased safety with Indocyanine-green (ICG) fluorescence cholangiography. Nevertheless, in high-risk cirrhotic patients (Child C) and/or in common bile duct lithiasis endoscopic and non-surgical conservative treatments are preferable

Publishing Inequality in LGBTQIA+ Research in Psychology: A Content Analysis

Despite the American Psychiatric Association’s removal of homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1973 and ego-dystonic homosexuality in 1987, nonheteronormative sexual orientations remain stigmatized and underrepresented in scientific literature. To estimate the prevalence of LGBTQIA+ topics in popular psychological research, the author queried more than 20,000 articles from 1987 to 2022 in the two most cited journals in each of four major domains (cognitive, clinical, developmental and social). In addition, the author randomly queried 20% of all empirical articles published from 1987 to 2021 in the top eight empirical journals to understand how often sexuality is included in participant descriptions. Lastly, to better understand who writes, edits, and approves LGBTQIA+ related articles, the authors contacted gatekeepers (i.e., editor in chief, associate editors, and first authors) to understand their identity in relation to the LGBTQIA+ community. Of all publications in the study timeframe (n=22,509), the eight most impactful journals published studies directly related to topic of sexuality at a rate of 0.44% (n = 100). The prevalence of research has not significantly increased over time in highest ranked journals or significantly varied within any of the four domains of psychology. Of the 5,373 randomly sampled articles, 2.5% (n=132) of articles included sexuality in the sample descriptions. Of the 78 participants who responded to the survey, the majority of authors (70.4%, n=38/54) and editors 87.5% (n=21/24) identified as heterosexual/straight. The authors concluded that despite gains, sexuality remains underexamined in psychological literature. Increasing representation in gatekeepers may be one way to address the paucity of research

Deep K_s-near-infrared Surface Photometry of 80 Dwarf Irregular Galaxies in the Local Volume

We present deep near-infrared (K_s) images and surface photometry for 80 dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) within ~5 Mpc of the Milky Way. The galaxy images were obtained at five different facilities between 2004 and 2006. The image reductions and surface photometry have been performed using methods specifically designed for isolating faint galaxies from the high and varying near-infrared sky level. Fifty-four of the 80 dIs have surface brightness profiles which could be fit to a hyperbolic-secant (sech) function, while the remaining profiles could be fit to the sum of a sech and a Gaussian function. From these fits, we have measured central surface brightnesses, scale lengths, and integrated magnitudes. This survey is part of a larger study of the connection between large-scale structure and the global properties of dIs, the hypothesized building-blocks of more massive galaxies
