Cultural and cognitive factors in symptom appraisal concerning menopause
Menopause is a biological and psychological phenomenon
in the lives of middle-aged women. It is important
to understand how biological variation is linked
to the subjective experience of menopause. In different
cultures menopause is seen variously as a normal
passage in life, and as a prototype of an illness, the
symptoms associated with it being seen to need medical
assistance.
These different views are influenced by cognitions,
attributions and pre-existing beliefs about menopause
and their relationship with psychological and social dimensions
such as changing of roles, occupation, aging,
stress among others. Although there is considerable
variability in symptom appraisal within cultures, the
meaning of menopause is also different across cultures.
As a part of life, menopause is not necessarily traumatic,
does not place healthy women at risk of an affective
disorder, and is considered by some to be a normal
phase that may or may not be accompanied by
physical discomfort (Berkun, 1986).For these reasons,
in the context of human aging menopause should be
viewed as a process and not an event (Lock, 1986).
The weight of evidence from anthropology and sociology
strongly suggest that the experience of the menopause
is shaped by historical factors and environmental
and cultural contexts, and by the individual’s personal history, both in the biological and in the social
senses. Psychological research is needed to determine
the cognitive, emotional and social mediators of these
factors.RESUMO: A menopausa B um fedmeno biologico ,e psicologic0
na vida das mulheres de meia idade. E importante
associados justificariam assisthcia midica.
necessariamente traumatica, niio coloca a mulher saudavel
envelhecimento humano (Lock, 1986). A antropologia

Understanding the relationship between illness perceptions of breast cancer and perceived risk in a sample of U.A.E. female university students: the role of comparative risk
BackgroundIn the Middle East region, the incidence of breast cancer (BC) has substantially increased in the last years. Despite a considerable body of research about BC in Arab countries, how illness perceptions of healthy women about BC may influence risk perception is unknown.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted on a sample of 298 young Emirati women. The measures included demographic information, illness perceptions, and risk perception. Descriptive and correlational analyses were performed to assess illness perceptions about BC, perceived individual risk and comparative risk. A structural equation modelling (S.E.M.) was built to investigate the relationship between illness perceptions and perceived individual risk.ResultsParticipants reported negative illness perceptions about BC The individual risk perception and the compared risk perception for BC were low. Participants with a family history of BC reported more negative illness and higher risk perceptions. The relationship between illness perceptions and perceived individual risk was significant and mediated by compared risk. The S.E.M. explained 55.9% of the variance in predicting perceived individual risk for BC.ConclusionWomen\u27s views of BC are important factors in risk perception and may provide culturally sensitive clues to promote early screening for BC in Arab countries. This may be important for policymakers to design intervention strategies to lower health risks, considering the different ways in which women perceive their risks for BC
Representations of depression and schizophrenia in the community: The role of illness and risk perceptions on help-seeking intentions
Illness perceptions (IPs) are important in understanding human reactions to illnesses, including mental health disorders. They influence risk perceptions and several variables relevant to the adjustment to a disorder, treatment seeking, and health outcomes. This study sought to compare IP, risk perception, and help-seeking intention for depression and schizophrenia in a community sample and to assess the mediating role of risk perception in the relationship between IP and help-seeking intention. A total of 380 adults participated in this study and filled out self-report measures of IPs, risk perceptions, and help-seeking intention. The previous diagnosis of depression was used to control the comparisons between the two disorders. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to test the mediation relationship. Perceived consequences, expected timeline, lack of personal control, and symptom identity were higher for schizophrenia, while lack of treatment control and concern were higher for depression. An interaction occurred with a previous diagnosis of depression for several dimensions of IP. Concerning the SEM, a valid model was obtained for depression, explaining 15.5% of help-seeking intentions, but not for schizophrenia. The results show that the general population represents depression and schizophrenia differently. These representations are influenced by having experienced depression, and that illness and risk perceptions contribute to explaining the intention to seek help. Considering these illness representations makes it possible to understand the general population’s emotional and cognitive reactions to mental health disorders

writing paradigm and its application in health settings.
It also refers the relevance of the cognitive and emotional
factors for making sense of life experiences through
the use of expressive writing, highlighting the benefits
or difficulties concerning its use. The way in which we
use the words in expressive writing gives important information
concerning the individual and it is also an important
aspect to differentiate between significant and usual themes.
The social sharing of emotions can also contribute to build
memories concerning significant events. Moreover, the
expressive writing of these emotions can promote cognitive
processing in order to make sense of the event. Using
the expressive writing as a therapeutic tool in health contexts,
either as self-help, or in combination with other techniques
can have an important contribution for health outcomes.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
------ ABTSRACT ------ Objective: To assess whether there are differences in symptoms before and after an intervention to promote the emotional expression about critical incidents experienced during the fire-fighters work. Method: This was a longitudinal study with three assessment moments (M1, M2 and M3) being the expressive writing technique used between the 2nd and 3rd assessment. At assessment moments the 44 participants completed a questionnaire, with measures of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), peritraumatic dissociation, health complaints, mental health and socio-demographic variables. Results: All 44 fire-fighters had experienced critical incidents at work. From M1 to M2 there was only a significant increase in health complaints. After the expressive writing, there was a significant decrease of the perception of trauma reported by the fire-fighters, a decrease in reported symptoms of PTSD and dissociation symptoms, and in pseudoneurological complaints. In general, there was a tendency for all the negative symptoms to decrease over time and for an improvement in psychological well-being. Conclusions: This study presents a contribution for the promotion of emotional expression, through the use of the expressive writing technique, in order to minimize the risk of developing psychological disorders associated with critical incidents
Influence of personality traits in self-evaluative salience, motivational salience and self-consciousness of appearance
Aim: The aim of this study was to understand the possible influence of personality traits on the importance and significance of perception of body image and self awareness of appearance in individuals.Method: 214 online recruited subjects between the ages of 17 and 64 years answered to a socio-demographic questionnaire, the Portuguese version of the instruments NEO-FFI (NEO-Five Factor Inventory), ASI-R (The Appearance Schemas Inventory – Revised) and DAS-24 (Derriford Appearance Scale – short). Results: It was found that age, Neuroticism and Agreeableness dimensions significantly influence an individual's investment in body image and self-awareness of appearance. Sexual orientations differed with regard to Self-Evaluative Salience and Self-Consciousness of Appearance. Conclusion: The performed analysis showed that neuroticism and agreeableness are related to Self Evaluative Salience and Self-Consciousness of Appearance
anteriores. ------ ABSTRACT ------- The aims of this study were to (1) investigate the levels of Posttraumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD) in emergency ambulance personnel (2) to analyse the pattern
of intercorrelation between socio-demographic variables, PTSD, sense of coherence,
and personality, and (3) to investigate possible gender differences between the above
variables. Fifty six participants completed a self-administered questionnaire, mean
age ranging from 18 to 55 years old. The results indicated that 64% of the sample
shoe symptoms of PTSD, and those also show lower sense of coherence, extroversion,
openness, agreeableness and conscientiousness. There are gender differences on
perception and interpretation of traumatic experiences, in which men show higher
sense of coherence. These results are congruent with previous studies on this area
