    Analysis of Offshore Wind Energy Leasing Areas for the Rhode Island/Massachusetts Wind Energy Area

    The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), under an interagency agreement with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), is providing technical assistance to BOEM on the identification and delineation of offshore leasing areas for offshore wind energy development within the Atlantic Coast Wind Energy Areas (WEAs) established by BOEM in 2012. This report focuses on NREL's evaluation of BOEM's Rhode Island/Massachusetts (RIMA) WEA leasing areas. The objective of the NREL evaluation was to assess the proposed delineation of the two leasing areas and determine if the division is reasonable and technically sound. Additionally, the evaluation aimed to identify any deficiencies in the delineation. As part of the review, NREL performed the following tasks: 1. Performed a limited review of relevant literature and RIMA call nominations. 2. Executed a quantitative analysis and comparison of the two proposed leasing areas 3. Conducted interviews with University of Rhode Island (URI) staff involved with the URI Special Area Management Plan (SAMP) 4. Prepared this draft report summarizing the key findings

    Involving users in OPAC interface design: Perspective from a UK study

An experiment was undertaken to find out the type of interactions features that users prefer to have in an OPAC. The study revealed that regardless of users’ Information Technology (IT) backgrounds, their functionality expectations of OPACs are the same. However, based on users’ previous experiences with OPACs, their requirements with respect to specific features may change. Users should be involved early in the OPAC development cycle process in order to ensure usable and functional interface

    Simple matrix models for random Bergman metrics

    Recently, the authors have proposed a new approach to the theory of random metrics, making an explicit link between probability measures on the space of metrics on a Kahler manifold and random matrix models. We consider simple examples of such models and compute the one and two-point functions of the metric. These geometric correlation functions correspond to new interesting types of matrix model correlators.     Spin-Peierls Dimerization of a s=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet on a Square Lattice

    Dimerization of a spin-half Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a square lattice is investigated for several possible dimerized configurations, some of which are shown to have lower ground state energies than the others. In particular, the lattice deformations resulting in alternate stronger and weaker couplings along both the principal axes of a square lattice are shown to result in a larger gain in magnetic energy. In addition, a `columnar' configuration is shown to have a lower ground state energy and a faster increase in the energy gap parameter than a `staggered' configuration. The inclusion of unexpanded exchange coupling leads to a power law behaviour for the magnetic energy gain and energy gap, which is qualitatively different from that reported earlier. Instead of increasing as δx\delta ^{x}, the two quantities depend on δ\delta as δν/lnδ.\delta ^{\nu}/| \ln \delta | . This is true both in the near critical regime (0δ0.1)(0\leq \delta \leq 0.1) as well as in the far regime (0δ<1)(0\leq \delta <1). It is suggested that the unexpanded exchange coupling is as much a source of the logarithmic dependence as a correction due to the contribution of umklapp processes. Staggered magnetization is shown to follow the same δ\delta -dependence in all the configurations in the small δ\delta -regime, while for 0δ<10\leq \delta <1, it follows the power law δx\delta ^{x}.Comment: 12 pages, 7 Postscript figures, RevTex forma

    Universal microscopic correlation functions for products of independent Ginibre matrices

    We consider the product of n complex non-Hermitian, independent random matrices, each of size NxN with independent identically distributed Gaussian entries (Ginibre matrices). The joint probability distribution of the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix is found to be given by a determinantal point process as in the case of a single Ginibre matrix, but with a more complicated weight given by a Meijer G-function depending on n. Using the method of orthogonal polynomials we compute all eigenvalue density correlation functions exactly for finite N and fixed n. They are given by the determinant of the corresponding kernel which we construct explicitly. In the large-N limit at fixed n we first determine the microscopic correlation functions in the bulk and at the edge of the spectrum. After unfolding they are identical to that of the Ginibre ensemble with n=1 and thus universal. In contrast the microscopic correlations we find at the origin differ for each n>1 and generalise the known Bessel-law in the complex plane for n=2 to a new hypergeometric kernel 0_F_n-1.Comment: 20 pages, v2 published version: typos corrected and references adde

    On the linear stability of solitons and hairy black holes with a negative cosmological constant: the odd-parity sector

    Using a recently developed perturbation formalism based on curvature quantities, we investigate the linear stability of black holes and solitons with Yang-Mills hair and a negative cosmological constant. We show that those solutions which have no linear instabilities under odd- and even- parity spherically symmetric perturbations remain stable under odd-parity, linear, non-spherically symmetric perturbations.Comment: 26 pages, 1 figur

    Experiment Simulation Configurations Used in DUNE CDR

    The LBNF/DUNE CDR describes the proposed physics program and experimental design at the conceptual design phase. Volume 2, entitled The Physics Program for DUNE at LBNF, outlines the scientific objectives and describes the physics studies that the DUNE collaboration will perform to address these objectives. The long-baseline physics sensitivity calculations presented in the DUNE CDR rely upon simulation of the neutrino beam line, simulation of neutrino interactions in the far detector, and a parameterized analysis of detector performance and systematic uncertainty. The purpose of this posting is to provide the results of these simulations to the community to facilitate phenomenological studies of long-baseline oscillation at LBNF/DUNE. Additionally, this posting includes GDML of the DUNE single-phase far detector for use in simulations. DUNE welcomes those interested in performing this work as members of the collaboration, but also recognizes the benefit of making these configurations readily available to the wider community.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, configurations in ancillary file
