On the zero set of G-equivariant maps
Let be a finite group acting on vector spaces and and consider a
smooth -equivariant mapping . This paper addresses the question of
the zero set near a zero of with isotropy subgroup . It is known
from results of Bierstone and Field on -transversality theory that the zero
set in a neighborhood of is a stratified set. The purpose of this paper is
to partially determine the structure of the stratified set near using only
information from the representations and . We define an index
for isotropy subgroups of which is the difference of
the dimension of the fixed point subspace of in and . Our main
result states that if contains a subspace -isomorphic to , then for
every maximal isotropy subgroup satisfying , the zero
set of near contains a smooth manifold of zeros with isotropy subgroup
of dimension . We also present a systematic method to study
the zero sets for group representations and which do not satisfy the
conditions of our main theorem. The paper contains many examples and raises
several questions concerning the computation of zero sets of equivariant maps.
These results have application to the bifurcation theory of -reversible
equivariant vector fields
Geology of the Snap Lake kimberlite intrusion, Northwest Territories, Canada: field observations and their interpretation
The Cambrian (523 Ma) Snap Lake hypabyssal kimberlite intrusion, Northwest Territories, Canada, is a complex segmented diamond-bearing ore-body. Detailed geological investigations suggest that the kimberlite is a multi-phase intrusion with at least four magmatic lithofacies. In particular, olivine-rich (ORK) and olivine-poor (OPK) varieties of hypabyssal kimberlite have been identified. Key observations are that the olivine-rich lithofacieshas a strong tendency to be located where the intrusion is thickest and that there is a good correlation between intrusion thickness, olivine crystal size and crystal content. Heterogeneities in the lithofacies are attributed to variations in intrusion thickness and structural complexities. The geometry and distribution of lithofacies points to magmaticco-intrusion, and flow segregation driven by fundamental rheological differences between the two phases. We envisage that the low-viscosity OPK magma acted as a lubricant for the highly viscous ORK magma. The presenceof such low-viscosity, crystal-poor magmas may explain how crystal-laden kimberlite magmas (>60 vol.%) are able to reach the surface during kimberlite eruptions. We also document the absence of crystal settling and the development of an unusual subvertical fabric of elongate olivine crystals, which are explained by rapid degassing-induced quench crystallization of the magmas during and after intrusio
The Indirect Limit on the Standard Model Higgs Boson Mass from the Precision FERMILAB, LEP and SLD Data
Standard Model fits are performed on the most recent leptonic and b quark Z
decay data from LEP and SLD, and FERMILAB data on top quark production, to
obtain and . Poor fits are obtained, with confidence levels
2%. Removing the b quark data improves markedly the quality of the fits and

A Toy Model of Flying Snake's Glide
We have developed a toy model of flying snake's glide [J.J. Socha, Nature
vol. 418 (2002) 603.] by modifying a model for a falling paper. We have found
that asymmetric oscillation is a key about why snake can glide. Further
investigation for snake's glide will provide us details about how it can glide

Persistent junk solutions in time-domain modeling of extreme mass ratio binaries
In the context of metric perturbation theory for non-spinning black holes,
extreme mass ratio binary (EMRB) systems are described by distributionally
forced master wave equations. Numerical solution of a master wave equation as
an initial boundary value problem requires initial data. However, because the
correct initial data for generic-orbit systems is unknown, specification of
trivial initial data is a common choice, despite being inconsistent and
resulting in a solution which is initially discontinuous in time. As is well
known, this choice leads to a "burst" of junk radiation which eventually
propagates off the computational domain. We observe another unintended
consequence of trivial initial data: development of a persistent spurious
solution, here referred to as the Jost junk solution, which contaminates the
physical solution for long times. This work studies the influence of both types
of junk on metric perturbations, waveforms, and self-force measurements, and it
demonstrates that smooth modified source terms mollify the Jost solution and
reduce junk radiation. Our concluding section discusses the applicability of
these observations to other numerical schemes and techniques used to solve

Calculation of The Lifetimes of Thin Stripper Targets Under Bombardment of Intense Pulsed Ions
The problems of stripper target behavior in the nonstationary intense
particle beams are considered. The historical sketch of studying of radiation
damage failure of carbon targets under ion bombardment is presented. The simple
model of evaporation of a target by an intensive pulsing beam is supposed.
Stripper foils lifetimes in the nonstationary intense particle can be described
by two failure mechanisms: radiation damage accumulation and evaporation of
target. At the maximal temperatures less than 2500K the radiation damage are
dominated; at temperatures above 2500K the mechanism of evaporation of a foil
prevails. The proposed approach has been applied to the discription of
behaviour of stripper foils in the BNL linac and SNS conditions.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
On the symmetry breaking phenomenon
We investigate the problem of symmetry breaking in the framework of dynamical
systems with symmetry on a smooth manifold. Two cases will be analyzed: general
and Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We give sufficient conditions for symmetry
breaking in both cases
Strategy towards Mirror-fermion Signatures
The existence of mirror fermions interacting strongly under a new gauge group
and having masses near the electroweak scale has been recently proposed as a
viable alternative to the standard-model Higgs mechanism. The main purpose of
this work is to investigate which specific experimental signals are needed to
clearly differentiate the mirror-fermion model from other new-physics models.
In particular, the case is made for a future large lepton collider with c.o.m.

Learning through social spaces: migrant women and lifelong learning in post-colonial London
This article shows how migrant women engage in learning through social spaces. It argues that such spaces are little recognised, and that there are multiple ways in which migrant women construct and negotiate their informal learning through socialising with other women in different informal modes. Additionally, the article shows how learning is shaped by the socio-political, geographical and multicultural context of living in London, outlining ways in which gendered and racialised identities shape, construct and constrain participation in lifelong learning. The article shows that one way in which migrant women resist (post)colonial constructions of difference is by engaging in informal and non-formal lifelong learning, arguing that the benefits are (at least) two-fold. The women develop skills (including language skills) but also use their informal learning to develop what is referred to in this article as 'relational capital'. The article concludes that informal lifelong learning developed through social spaces can enhance a sense of belonging for migrant women
