Statistical analysis of Lake Ontario water levels

    Get PDF
The regulation of Lake Ontario water level began on April 20, 1960. In recent years, there have been many Lake Ontario residents dissatisfied with the erosion damage to their properties. Many believe that the increase in erosion has been caused by the International St. Lawrence River Board of Control maintaining a water level which is too high. The scope of this thesis was to first identify what the actual change in the lake level has been since regulation began and then to determine how much of this difference could be attributed to regulation and how much should be attributed to the supply change. The results indicate that the major cause is the increase in supplies

A novel approach to spectral MRI

The motivation behind this research was to develop and investigate how effective a spatial-spatial-spectral algorithm, combining filtered-backprojection, variable-bandwidth and spatial-spectral imaging techniques would be in extracting spectral information from magnetic resonance images. The technique employed in this research, which combines the fore mentioned imaging techniques is believed to be original. It is known that the chemical shift artifact, in a magnetic resonance image becomes large as bandwidth decreases. A Ramlak filter and an inverse Radon transform was used to apply filtered-backprojection and spatial-spectral research to magnetic resonance imaging. The preliminary work in developing a spatial-spatial-spectral algorithm to extract spectral information from variable-bandwidth magnetic resonance images has been accomplished, but more work is needed to determine if this technique can successfully resolve metabolites. The effectiveness of this algorithm was found to depend on both the geometric complexity of the object, and the amount of resolution lost when an inverse Radon transform is applied to the image data. Both fat and water were found to be resolvable with this technique. In addition the CH2 and CH3 peaks were also found to be resolvable. It has been determined that this technique can resolve at least 25 Hz, but the highest possible resolution has yet to be determined

Accessible through the interactive web documentation at http://deglobalize.com, the platform offers a media-archaeological archive for speculative ethnography, enabling the forensic processing of single documents in line with actor-network theory

Abstract The paper is motivated by the debate on what are the skills to be worked on behalf of an educational quality. These concepts, often taken as basic and universal, are understood in some proposals that use them as a tool to reinforce themselves through the evaluation of large-scale policies, as responsible for improving education outcomes. To perform the counterpoint to how the program content of education is still perceived, some contributions of Paulo Freire were used when building his proposal of a liberating education: humanism, as the radical commitment to the concrete man towards the promotion of social transformation; praxis, as the ability to act and think toward the collectively objectified goals; and the cultural synthesis, as a new content of education, committed to the "being more" of educators and learners, who mediated by the world, try to reflect/rebuild critically, sharing understandings.

Cryptography, the art of writing secret messages, has been practiced for almost 3000 years. Two people have a message to communicate to each other , with a chance of an outside person intercepting the message before it reaches the receiver . Therefore, the message must be put through an encryption scheme to keep the intervening person from finding the true nature of the message . An encryption scheme is coding a message using an enciphering key and then decoding the coded message with a deciphering key

Communication and Aging: Perceptions of Family and Friend Interaction on Self Reported Life Satisfaction Among Selected Residents of Three Nursing Homes

The study of communication and aging provides great potential for enriching the lives of the elderly. Of course this should be of great interest to each of us as we are all inevitably aging. One rapidly growing area in communication research deals with how communication affects the life satisfaction of the elderly. Of particular interest is the attitudinal effect of family and friend interaction. Early research dealing with the elderly focused on two theories: 1. Activity theory, which is the idea that social activity is essential to an older person\u27s sense of well being and; 2. Disengagement theory, which suggests that there is a mutual withdrawal of person and society marked by a decreasing level of activity with age. Recent years have sparked studies dealing with the quality of interaction. Researchers are now saying that it is the meaningful interaction with others, not merely the activity, that makes the difference. John Nussbaum\u27s studies (1983, 1988) were among the first to recognize this new approach. These studies paved the way for this project. The purpose of this study was threefold: 1. to examine the content of interaction between elderly individuals and their family and friends and this relationship, if any, to life satisfaction. 2. to determine if perspectives of these elderly people have changed towards friends and family members since coming to the nursing home. 3. to investigate the degree of self-reported satisfaction in the population surveyed. Although previous studies dealt with three different environments for the elderly, this study included only residents from nursing homes. The nursing homes included in this study were Frankfort Terrace in Frankfort, Illinois; The Imperial in Joliet, Illinois; and Hilltop Convalescent Center in Charleston, Illinois. A condensed version of the Adult Communication Survey, containing 15 questions, was administered to 75 elderly residents to assess the interaction content of the elderly individuals between family and friends in relation to life satisfaction. The data were then tabulated and averaged. Results showed that family interaction, in particular, for all three nursing homes was very high in relation to life satisfaction. Overall there were no significant differences in the satisfaction levels among the three nursing homes. Perceptions of family and friends remained consistent with only non-significant attitudinal differences in an overall comparative analysis

Intolerance of Uncertainty as a Contributor to Fear and Avoidance Symptoms of Panic Attacks

    Get PDF
Panic disorder symptoms are persistent for 50–80% of cases even after treatment, resulting in experiences of disability and dissatisfaction in life. Previous research has focused on anxiety sensitivity (AS) and its dimensions as contributing to symptoms of panic disorder; however, recent research has suggested that intolerance of uncertainty (IU)—the tendency for a person to consider the possibility of a negative event occurring as threatening, irrespective of the actual probability of its occurrence—may also play a critical role. The current study was designed to assess the specific relationships between dimensions of IU (i.e. prospective IU and inhibitory IU) and the fear and avoidance symptoms associated with panic disorder. Participants included 122 community members (81% women) with a history of at least one panic attack who participated in a larger study on fear. Participants completed measures of AS, IU, and panic disorder symptoms. Correlation and regression analyses supported a significant and substantial relationship between AS, inhibitory IU, and panic disorder symptoms. Inhibitory IU accounted for relatively more variance in avoidance symptoms related to panic disorder than did the fears of physical sensations dimension of AS. As such, further investigation of the role of IU in panic disorder symptoms appears warranted. Comprehensive results, implications, and directions for future research are discussed
